Hyundai made it clear that the 2010 Genesis Coupe is targeting the newest American muscle cars and BMW's perennial powerhouse when it released the car's specifications on Thursday.

Hyundai notes the 3.8-liter Genesis coupe weighs in at 3,402 pounds and has a better power-to-weight ratio than the BMW 335i, Chevrolet Camaro LS or Dodge Challenger.

The Genesis Coupe's base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 making an estimated 220 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual will be the standard transmission; a five-speed automatic is optional. Top speed is expected to be 137 mph, with highway fuel economy estimated at 30 mpg. Hyundai will offer a Track model of the four-cylinder coupe, but the top four-banger will be the R-Spec model with performance add-ons and comfort conveniences targeted at tuners.

Hasn't this story been posted before? Personally, I couldn't see anybody cross shopping a 335i/328i with the Hyundai. I could see the Genesis stealing sales away from V6 Mustangs, Camaros, and Accord coupes though.

Agent 009, I hope this your April Joke of the month in November? I don't think people who own a BMW 3-Series coupe are NOT ready to trade their car in for this Hyundai.

Lexus, Infiniti, Audi, and MB is has way more prestigious and class than Hyundai and they have a hard stealing sales from the 3-Series.

You got to give credit where it is deserve, Hyundai has done an Outstanding job within the last several. But I don't think this Genesis will steal any Thunder from BMW yet. This Genesis has NOT prove itself yet both in liability and performance.

Entry level buyers are the most vulnerable for any maker. These are the people reaching for that higher rung but may have issues with the expenses needed to maintain these cars.

Everyone wants a luxury brand but not so many want the associated costs inherited with a brand.

While I like BMW quite a bit, I steered a person away from one towards a Lexus (yeah I did that) over the weekend, when he showed fears of maintenance cost 5+ years down the line. He did not want to pay the price for any expensive repairs.

Basically since the BMW has proprietary parts only to that model, the cost will be higher than say an IS that will share a common number of parts with less expensive cars.

THIS is why the Hyundai may pose a threat. I think BMW's leasers will probably not care since the 4 year maintenance covers darn near everything. It is those who want long term ownership.

1st- hyundai won't still any BMW thunder.

2nd- Maintenance on a Lexus is not cheap. Local dealer 08 IS350 10K to owners manual $185-$195. Service is every 5k miles. A 30K is about $350. Newer parts such as bulbs, belts and such are no longer shared between Toyota and Lexus cars, and the techs are not certified from one brand to the other.
My opion if you own/lease/buy a luxury brand and don't or can't have it serviced at a main dealer you really shouldn't have a luxury vehicle.

3rd- If he was worried about the maintenance cost after 4/50k, buy the BMW extended plan, it takes coverage to 6/100k, and is $1,500-$2,200 depending on model range. He can also extend the new car warrenty through BMW to 6/100k. I don't know cost on this but will research.

Alot of people lease because of the TAX benefits, not because the their incomes.

I don't think Infiniti is a prestigious brand since they are still renamed for North America. MB, Audi, and Jaguar are the most prestigious luxury brands and then there is BMW and Lexus which aren't as prestigious but still are contenders in the market. Infiniti and Acura both have not moved up yet.

The Genesis labeled cars for Hyundai are good cars but they are not taking thunder from any lux brand...Since the Sedan came out I have seen ONE on the road...I haven't had not one customer cross shop my G35 or M35 sedans with the Genesis sedan...The Genesis coupe will just be the next car Tuners have fun with like the 350z, S2000, Civics, GTI's and others

I'm one the biggest supporters of Hyundais turnaround there is. Their emergence this decade will no doubt put serious heat on all the other asian and domestic automakers from here on out.

But I don't think you'll be seeing any 3 series coupe owners seriously considering this Hyundai. I wouldn't.

No 3-series coupe buyer will even look at the Hyundai unless they couldn't afford the BMW to begin with.

This won't steal any sales from the "premium" brands, but I think it will in the sports coupe market. It'll prolly take a few from Mustangs, Camaros, Accords, Civics, Zs, etc. This will prolly be a great teen/power junkie car that wants something cheap and fun.

The car it seems the closest to is the the Infinity G37. The V6 should compete somewhat. I don't think the Hyundai is quite as quick. It will be interesting to do a side by side road test comparison. I'm sure it will happen soon.

Alright, that was fun.

I really like Mr Amazingbummer, because after a nice copy and paste of my last argument in answer to several of his posts, this included a few questions about his age, maturity, mental evolution and such, well, all I got was a immature comment of the "copy and paste".

So I made up my own conclusion, well, 3 of them actually;

1- he is child (pre-teen) probably
2- he is an agent just fueling flame wars (shame on autospies)
3- he is a bit slow, as in challenged (therefore forgiven)

SO I AM TAKING A POLE; COME ON GUYS, LET ME KNOW WHICH ONE YOU THINK APPLIES TO AMAZINGBUMMER.

This topic is goofy. I cannot imagine anyone cross-shopping these cars. The Genesis coupe is going to be a nice car, but it is no Bimmer. As others have said, it will most likely be cross-shopped with the Altima coupe, the Accord coupe and the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger V6s.

I can't really see anybody cross-shopping BMW, Infiniti and Hyundai, regardless of each vehicle's similar horsepower outputs. One buys a car for more than just its performance stats.

Because the Hyundai that will be cross-shopped with Lexus is clearly a luxury car and will be cross-shopped with Lexus cars in the same price range (meaning the ES). This Hyundai coupe clearly competes with cars on a different strata than that which the 3-Series coupe sits.

In no way is a Hyundai ever to be considered a luxury car maker even close to Lexus. You do realize that in many ads the Genesis is compared more to a 5-series BMW.

Hyuandai goes against the BMW in its ads because it is trying to establish the Genesis' performance credentials. It knows that in order to get enthusiasts into the showroom, it will have to have better numbers than a performance icon. Unfortunately, most people predisposed to Bimmers aren't thinking about Hyundai. Some people who simply want a luxurious (and the Genesis does have a nice level of luxury), quiet car that is unobtrusive and doesn't cost an arm and a leg will compare the Genesis to the ES and maybe a preowned LS.

Just give Hyundai time. They are today's Infiniti and Lexus. Remember what they did to Merc and BMW back in the 90s? Granted Hyundai currently is not on par with the Germans but they've got a helluva cheat sheet.

But as long there are brand whores, they won't rival BMW. Only enthusiast will see the value in them.
