Just How Much Would You Pay For A New Nissan GT-R?
Think the $70,000 asking price is a great deal for the upcoming Nissan GT-R?
Well the Spies think it may be, but only if you can get it for somewhere near that price.
With only 1500 examples planned for the entire US market, there are reports surfacing that the GT-R will command up a $15,000 premium at the dealer level.
Now setting the collectability aside for the moment, that changes the landscape quite a bit and we aren’t just sure how the value to performance per dollar would then equate. Is it still the value it was when we first saw the MSRP?
Of course only the consumer can tell us. So the question now beckons us to ask. Just how much would you pay to own a new GT-R?

houstoncutie2000 why do you always have to participate in every post that might pose a threat to Toyota, or even give credit to a non-Toyota Japanese company? Let us (AutoSpies bloggers) be, some people have been waiting a long time for this car to hit our shores and well, Toyota in this case doesn’t offer an alternative so maybe just maybe you are speaking out of turn. Like the King of Spain said to Hugo Chavez recently… “Shut Up!”

But SMART people, the ones who appreciate cars and KNOW cars, walk into a Nissan dealership looking to spend $70K on a GT-R.

I don't know where they got that number but I just don't understand how the GT-R can get from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds. Although it does have 480 HP and AWD, this car still ways 3800 lbs. and thats a lot to lug around. The lambo gallardo has around 500 hp and weighs around 3200 lbs and is rated w/0-60 of 4 seconds. I was at the LA autoshow and i asked the speaker about the stats and he also said that the figures weren't exactly true. He estimated that it would more realistically be around 4 seconds which is more believable but still hard to accept.

It is indeed very expensive. On the brighter side, in about another 3 years from now when I get my driver's license, I'll be able to own one from the used car market for 1/3 the original price. And by that time, I am sure there will be plenty of aftermarket parts available for me to make it go even faster.

Your first car will be a GT-R?
You must be joking...insurance, maintenance (think because it's a Nissan it will be cheap to maintain? Wrong), fuel (in 3 years I'm guessing fuel prices will be higher), initial cost (It will be worth way more than a 1/3 of its price in 3 years, more like 60%), and the highly likely factor that you will die...a 0-60 in 3.5, 480 hp, 192 mph, twin turbo AWD hypercar as your first car...right.
That's really not a good idea. Please do the sensible thing every other rich kid does (I'm guessing you're rich judging by your expectations of your first car) and buy a 3 series or whatever. If you do for some mad reason get bought (you're not using your own money are you) this thing then I beg you, please, please, please take as many advanced driving courses as you can...480hp in the hands of a novice is not a good idea...
I'm a new driver, and let me tell you, everything is fast enough, and you will be very surprised to find out just how quickly "slow" cars get up to speed...hell my car does 0-60 in 11.5 and I suddenly find myself going way faster than I intended.

I guess I'm a little bit confused as to how an auto enthusiast becomes little more than a magazine jockey unless he (1) can drive a car relatively well; or (2) can understand the inner workings of a car on par with that of a mechanic. Unless your father is a mechanic (in which case I'm not quite sure you should be asking for a used GT-R), I fail to see how your opinion is based off of little more than magazine reading, which we can all for ourselves.

Nissan has the "heritage" the german's rely on and also can be done so with the "reliability" that the jap's focus on.
this car is a beast and i highly doubt the IS-F/RS/AMG/M can compare, this is a supercar!

SVXXX An Evo or STI can run against a 911 on a track just like this Nissan can run with a Porsche 911 turbo. I never said the GT-R is not fast, I only said is the next thing up from the other boy racer cars category like STI or Evo. What STI and Evo represent in the 35K segment, the GT-R represents in the 70K segment. They are all(Evo, STI and GT-R) just fast econoboxes.

"It's sad when this is the only argument that a hater can make, kind of pathetic really."
I agree! And, IMO, it doesn't MATTER what a car's roots are as long as the END PRODUCT is the one that shines! The GT-R, whether the badge on its hood was a Nissan one or not, is an amazing vehicle! That's like saying the M3, RS4, IS-F, C63 are all pieces of crap because they're based on "entry-level" sedans! Does anybody really care about that? NO. They're high-end cars, with excellent performance. The same applies to the GT-R.

You are such an IGNORANT...How do you know this is an amazing vehicle? A guy like you who's obviously clueless when it comes to cars thinks Nissan suddenly became a super-car maker. It doesn't matter what roots a car has? Are you that clueless? People buy Porsche because Porsche gives the guarantee of excellence with their name. What guarantee a Nissan gives? That you can go fast in a quarter mile? You are a fool...nothing more.
And your infantile comparison with the M3 or AMG cars??? Are you comparing luxury makers with Nissan. M3 or AMG cars are based on an entry LUXURY vehicles but they are almost entirely redesigned from ground up to became the performance sedans that wear those badges(M and AMG). Are you comparing that with what Nissan builds? How pathetic is that?

The world's most expensive rice-rocket. Sorry I know it's a ridiculously fast car, and the styling is not up to par with what others may like. But I can see that headline popping up all over soon enough.
I was shocked to see this thing well over 65k. I would have put it at 50-55. For 60k plus, I'll take an IS-F, M3, S4, AMG. They all may not be as fast (some are), but I would feel better about myself at the end of the day paying for a luxury nameplate instead of a Nissan. It's a good company, don't get me wrong, but something that costs as much as your luxury brand vehicles (a la MX45) should not be in your everyday consumer brand, regardless of where it started overseas.

I think that it should be in the 60k range, in order to compete with the M3s of the world - superior performance, with a similar price - that way, many potential buyers might have a real conundrum (style vs. raw performance?). Any real automotive "enthusiast" would go the raw performance route. However, the purchasing decision is not and should not just be about performance if the vehicle is a daily driver.

The GT-R doesn't, or should I say, the M3, RS4, and C63 do not compete in the same class as the GT-R, how did those cars get into this thread?
Cynical
- 11/21/2007 3:38:40 PM

I think the M3s/RS4s got in this thread because of relative price parity - a buyer in the $60k-$70k range has three good options with the M3/RS4/C63 (I figure the re-designed RS4 may be a little bit higher given its price relative to M3 historically, but let's leave that out for now). The GT-R complicates things a bit, because for a few $k more, you get performance on the level of a 911 Turbo. Now, I understand that the M3/RS4/C63 are not 100% performance tuned (there has to be some aspect of daily drive-ability for lack of a better term), but I think that a buyer in the segment would at least consider, if only briefly, the GT-R due to its performance aspirations. That's why I think that the GT-R would present a viable choice if it were slightly lower priced, a la Lexus (although in this case, the GT-R performs better, whereby a Lexus gives you 80% of the performance for 80% of the price). The fact is, Nissan will have a hard time garnering buyers in that price range due to its nameplate, unless it absolutely blows the doors off its competition. If you offer it at $60k, you have a comparably priced (if not better priced) vehicle that severely outperforms competitors in the segment, drawing more of the performance-oriented crowd away from a segment that really only had 3 real options.

A lot of Idiot Badge whores here who call themselves enthusiasts know nothing about this car and its history!
It was never meant to compete with a Porsche or any beautiful car out there on looks, the key execution of this car's looks were for it to look mechanical and industrial. Even Nissans's CEO said that they deliberately designed it looked mechanical and mean in execution true to the GTR's history of being GODZILLA!
Anybody who does not know this knows nothing about the GTR!
True to its heritage of being one of the greatest sports cars of this generation, I commend them for staying true to their roots!
Anyway! Real Car enthusiasm is for the love of cars and not for a car's badge or country of origin, like many posters here claim!

so if everyone else here are idiots and not you....how hypocritcal is for you to say the car was desighned to look industrial, and not beautiful....and call the people who think the car is ugly idiots......that is not logical...styling is subjective....as far as the price of thsi car it should be a 70-85,000 car, not anything over that. its interior appears to be nicer than the "base" 911, and im sure at such a low volume it will be less common than the corvette. It isnt an evo or sti, or an M3, or RS4 for several reasons. Those cars are all simply faster versions of another car, this car isnt that its ....a completely new car other than the engine which it shares with the G37, if this car was simply infiniti's answer to the M, or AMG and was based on the G37 and was a hyped g37 i would say 70 grand was way to much. but up to 85 grand doesnt sound ourageous for this car, even a bargain at that price hell the rs4 runs up to over 70 grand, the convertible is 80+ and cant touch this car neither can any of the cars that the RS4 competes with. in short 70-85,000 is a great price for this car

What your paying for is the the extensive R&D. Regardless of the nameplate, anything that achieves the kind of performance that has initially been reported is extraordinary. Even the best performance bargin to date, the Z06, can't match these figures for relatively the same price. I for one would never allow a nameplate to dictate how expensive or inexpensive a car should be. Instead, I would allow the merits of the car do that. Otherwise, I think it would be "snobish".

Houston just proved that she bashes everything not Toyota without even knowing the facts. Just gets a warm and fuzzy by knocking other cars to get a rise out of fans...lol. Another reason no one takes you seriously.
Anyways I am sure that Nissan is trying to directly compete with the Corvette and Porsche niche'. This may be a reason the base Vette increased power to 430BHP because it saw this car coming. This will be a good high-end sports car by what I have read. I still find it hard to believe it clocks 3.5 in 0-60. I also may warm up to the exterior when I see it in person.
As for dealer markups...you better believe it unless it gets word directly from Nissan to sell at sticker. I expect this car to sell at $75-80K. Mostly due to the exclusivity than actually worth.

The car is worth every penny but its exclusive-ness will no doubt drive the price up. Once the hype and marketing starts up for it I can see them going for as much as $90k easily.

Why not $15000 premium initially?
The retro Ford Thounderbird had a $10000 markup when it was just
released. Now, where is it?
I predict the markup on GT-R will continue for a 2-3 years. Then you will see discount like normal cars.
If you had bought a NSX in 1991 for $55K. You can still sell it today for $20K easily with (<100K miles) after 16 years!!! Some sports car with followers depreciates very very slowly.

Look at that big old plastic clunky wing on the back!
Oh my god!
Looks like the wing off my old Merkur XR4Ti.
You know Scott Pruett used to race those ;)
Here's some photos of the car.

I want this car. This is the best car coming from Japan so it is GREAT! It's a shame that only 1500 are coming each year. Huge markups....
