Kings of Japan go head-to-head on pricing: Nissan GT-R vs Lexus IS-F
Earlier this month Lexus officially released the details on its upcoming Lexus IS-F. Powered by a 5.0 liter V8 engine, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS-F produces 417 horsepower and will go on sales in Japan this December for 7.66 million which is about $65,742 US Dollars.

According to WindingRoad, Nissan previously said that ”prices in Japan for the Nissan GT-R will start from around ¥7.8 million,” which is about $66,380 US Dollars.

So that’s not much more than the Lexus IS-F. We had official word today that the Nissan GT-R will be powered by a 3.8 liter V6 engine that produces

That COST (approximately) The same amount of Yen...

Price Comparison - Justified!

There's the biggest down side to this forum...

There's so much 'fan-boyism' that individuals fail to see logic when it's staring them in the face.

Brand loyalty is all good & well, but at least take a minute to actually read what's being said before making hasty judgments.

why are these two cars being compared? one is a sedan and the other is sport coupe.

let's see, how about if we compare the M5 to a CLK63AMG?

get some new material.

Right, who cares about that stuff. Or how they drive--doesn't matter! Or how they look, how they make you feel, nope... it's just the pricing. That's all that matters.

In that case, I will compare the Jaguar XJ8 to the new Toyota Land Cruiser, because both are roughly the same price.

Hard to compare the two.
One is a world class 4 seat sports car, the other, well....

A better comparison for the GT-R would be the Lexus IS-F.

lol

But the problem is, we know nothing about the LF-A or how it will perform or how much it will cost. I'm betting that it will be at least twice the price of the Nissan... which leads me to ask, why not get a lightly-used Ferrari or 911 Turbo at that price? Is anybody really going to be driving their LF-A every day? Because it's not AWD like the R8. Well, let's wait and see... Lexus had better have something special.

In their defense, the headline does specifically read,

"Kings of Japan go head-to-head on pricing: Nissan GT-R vs Lexus IS-F"

The OPERATIVE term there being - ON PRICING.

Whether anyone likes it or nor, these vehicles are going after the very same Yen...

exactly this is about pricing not performance. If you read the whole article the main point is would you pay around $600 more for a GT-R for 56 more horsepower...or would you pick a GT-R over a LEXUS IS-F since it may not cost you much

well you have to wonder that despite the GTR costing anywhere between 65000-70000+, why people buy cars like the M3, RS4, and the upcoming ISF. all have nowhere near the same performance in exchange for....luxury?

again i posture, what luxury are you getting? in the gtr: leather dash - check, dvd sound system with multifunction lcd screen - check, leather appointed seats (w/ optional heaters) - check, bilstien adjustable suspension - check, dual clutch transmission - check, dual climate control - check, intelligent AWD with 4 wheel active steering - check, distinctive styling with exclusivity - check...what else is there?

granted the only thing we dont know is how much its going to cost. but dont tell me for the same price you would choose an M3 that has an all plastic dash, 50 fewer hp, 130 fewer lb ft, slower top end, less exclusivity...dont even get me started on the rs4 and isf.

valid points taken...however do we kno which trim model GTR is based at the $70k? as i've read, there may be 3 trims. so is this the 3.7L 350hp GTR or is this the 475hp GTR beast we are assuming?

the articles states the GT will start at roughly $68k, but no where does it mention which trim/engine/performance/options you get for the $70k.

i do expect the 475hp GTR to be based at $75k and top out at $80-85k fully loaded. just my OPINION of course.

the IS-F should top out at $73-74k based on configurations with the IS350.

gsh23gsh23 - 10/17/2007 3:44:31 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
all the trim levels have the same mechanical hardware. only changes are bose stereo, special color combos, different looking rims, different tires, and the optional heated seats.

so the base model will have the same performance figures as the premium package and black edition package.

there WILL be variants in the future that feature more carbon fiber and more HP. its suspected that for MY2010 there will be the V-spec variant. these are the models designed to blow away even the 911 turbo and are supposed to come with manual transmissions.

even so, in base trim right now, 60-80k is not much for on par 911 turbo specs. not to mention that any form of creature comfort is an addition to the already 120k+ price tag.

btw you are mistaking the GTR for the nismo Z. in japan, the 350Z has a special version by nismo putting out 350hp from a 3.7L. special aero kits and such. the GTR is by no means a Z of any sort. price for the nismo Z in the US is 38k.

ok, having the same features do NOT make cars equal in luxury terms. the leather in gt-r will have less quality than the leather in MB C63 for example. same with the navigation, same with every single button in the car. Some cars just have more luxury than others. If you can't see that than you will be happy with any cheap built interior, just go for the performance. You will change your opinions later..

DaHarderDaHarder - 10/17/2007 4:07:02 PM

Please...

Luxury at this level as all about the buyer's perception/expectation.

I remember when I was looking for a larger sedan a few years back, and test drove the S-Class vs. 7-series vs. VW Phaeton, and found the Phaeton to be more comfortable, more luxurious (love those air-vents!) and better built than the other two, yet I allowed the fact that it was but a VW to sway me into getting (yet another) BMW.

Thank goodness, I'm over all that now, and buy want I find appealing regardless of what emblem graces the hood.

i think you fail to see that performance IS the new luxury. its why mercedes will never be a ferrari or why a bmw will never be a porsche. better quality leather? leather will be an OPTION in the mercedes. and when you do opt for it, dont expect rolls royce quality. buttons? i suppose thats why the 997 turbo costs $50,000 more; better quality buttons, please.

ill say it again, luxury cannot be quantified. this is why performance will always be a measure of luxury. if you cant go around the ring fast, then make the quietest car out there. thats where rolls royce excels. or make a whole bunch of top grade electronics. this is what lexus does.

"why people buy cars like the M3, RS4, and the upcoming ISF. all have nowhere near the same performance in exchange for....luxury?"

No, most people live in the real world and can't have a racecar-gone-street as their daily driver. The RS4, M3, C63 and IS-F make much more sense for someone who doesn't want to sacrifice performance at the expense of space and usability. As much as Nissan is trying to persuade you otherwise, the GT-R is not something you would want to drive every day. If you're buying one, you may as well stretch to $100K and get a G35 sedan on the side.

As for interior quality... this car has a cheap-ass interior from the pictures. But I don't care! It's going to be an incredible performance machine.

And the 911 Turbo? Wow, I sat in one with the full-leather (black/beige), and it was incredibly luxurious. Perfect materials everywhere. Very impressive; although the GT-R makes it look overpriced, the Turbo is a bargain for its performance. That is my #1 supercar right now, tied with the R8, my dream...

gsh23gsh23 - 10/18/2007 1:01:41 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
well s4 i guess we have different views. if you think the gtr interior is cheap ass, i dare not ask what you think the M3 interior looks like. the GTR has a full size trunk, probably good for two golf bags and has 4 seats. theres a very good chance i will consider getting this car in two years and i dont see why you cant make this a daily. we arent talking R8 supercar here with no trunk and no seats. what porsche has a trunk the size of the gtr's?

i think you are like me, someone who appreciates leather and i can say that from the pictures shown so far, the suede/leather seats and leather dash will be very nice. im looking at the big picture and if the M3 or RS4 have better air con buttons, then so be it.

I don't know. the Hyundai Azera has some of the same "luxury" appointments as some of the top saloons in the world.

Which leads me to wonder. Why is the hyundai not selling 3 million cars per year, while A8, S-Klasse, and 7er sell 100 cars per year?

I think saying they have the same equipment is like saying they have wheels. while they do the same things, there are differences that make them what they are.

Don't be so sure. For one car that does it all... well, I'D take the GT-R, but a normal person may need the space that the IS-F provides.

i dont know about choosing a sedan as of yet on my end...

a full comparison would ultimately make my choice better know but byt looks and pwr on paper, i'd have to choose the AMG rite now.

many things may change based upon actual testing though.

The never ending battle between torque and turbo lag. Personally I am not a fan of the new GT-R. I think it took Nissan too long to develop and waaaay to long to bring to the U.S. Not to mention I would never pay $60+k for a Nissan. Their non-lux brand is making a car that would whoop anything Infiniti has. I'm a little lost. I know the GT has always been a Nissan but for some reason I feel it would have been better in Infiniti badging going against the likes of the M3/S4.

Pricewise, yes the Nissan wins, but for me I would rather have the Lexus if given a choice. 4 doors practicality with a 5.0 V8. I still say Lexus is being modest with the numbers of 417hp. But again, that's just me.

You can compare the GT-R to the new Toyota Supra if they ever build one. I just can't get over paying that much for a Nissan when you could get an M3 for about the same price.

That's a tough choice to choose between them. On one hand, the IS comes with luxury features in addition to the performance and on the other hand, the GT-R is more of a supercar. It all boils down to luxury vs. sport.

Depends on the person. I think I would choose the IS-F. I'm not being biased towards Lexus, I just think the GT-R looks a little weird from behind. The exhaust and taillights are the only cool looking things back there. The rest...well...I don't like it.

The biggest shame is that they're both rather embarrassing to look at, at ANY price.

Of course, I've long grown out of the 'Boy Racer' phase, which I guess comes from being stationed in Japan so long where I actually owned an R33 GT-R, Honda NS-X, WRX-STI, Silvia K's, Eunos Cosmo (3-rotor) et al at various times, and quickly realized that they're all really is just cars... nothing more.

Seriously. How many people are willing to pay $85 thousand dollars for a Nissan? Some guy said he's going to get one and resell it for a profit.

Good Luck!

The buz around the Nissan GTR is no where near those of the universally acclaimed Audi R8 (where you can resell the R8 for a profit).

Sure, that was speculated... Last Year!

I agree, that (during this century) NO Nissan badged vehicle should command 75-100k in the United States.

PERIOD!

Nissan's not marketing this as simply the GT-R, sans any additional brand affiliation/badging, yet selling it through Infiniti dealers is a mistake.

The GT-R did not beat the 997 turbo. This was claime, but later proven that this did not in fact happen. A 330ci could beat a f430 spider around the track if ferdinand Alonso was driving it, and my grandfather was driving the ferrari. IT's unbeleivable the claims that are made these days.

What are you talking about? Porsche put their best driver in the 997 TT to get the best time around the famous track. It doesn't matter who's driving any other car if he/she beats that time. If the GTR has a faster time than the best that Porsche TT had already put out, then the GT-R is faster on that particular track.

PERIOD!

and you know that Nissan ran that time? Last I heard, it was a claim.

But just to let you, along with everyone else know, no Porsche fan is going to trade in their Porsche for a Nissan, even if it does the ring in 7:30:00 flat (a little exaggeration on time doesn't hurt).

People buying the GT-R, which is a nice sports car, are buying a Nissan sports car. They want the qualities/amenities that Nissan has to offer. It is what it is.
