LA Auto Show: Cadillac Escalade Hybrid will get 18mpg (live images)
Cadillac today showed off its new Escalade Hybrid and honestly it’s pretty pointless unless you care about just an extra 6mpg and hybrid badging all over your Caddy. But every little bit helps right?
Powered by a 6.0 liter V8 Gen IV engine the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid will get an increase of 50 percent in its fuel-economy, making the combined fuel-economy go up from 12mpg to 18mpg. The two-mode-hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission and a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System.
The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid will be available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. The 2WD has a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds while the 4WD has a towing capacity of 5,700 pounds. The SUV goes on sale in summer of 2008. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

I dont mind the "Hybrid" technology. I believe that it should be STANDARD in the entire Escalade line though. Also, PLEASE get rid of all of those tacky "HYBRID" badges. This is a Luxury vehicle. The "Escalade" and "GM" badges are too much already...

agreed ^
Also, the real benefit should be reduced emissions, no?

The hybrid badges should go, but look at the bright side, at least they didn't make it look much different from the regular model. The Yukon Hybrid looks disgusting IMO. Why couldn't they just keep the same styling with a hybrid engine?

They don't sell (any?) 2WD SUVs in Britain...they tried with the old Rav-4 and the Nissan X-trail...but they didn't sell well. I don't see the point personally, if you get 2WD, why not just get a minivan?

In fact, this and the LS600hL would make the perfect pseudo-hybrid family!

In other words, you're saying Caddy and Lexus are unnecessary.
Makes sense to me!

Improving fuel mileage overall is a good thing. At least the manufactuers are moving in the right direction. Maybe not as much as everyone wants, but its still good. People will probably pay the hybrid premium for the gas / environmental benefits.

if 'everyone' wanted decent mileage they wouldn't continue to buy obscene cars like these. NOBODY needs a 3-ton vehicle like this to drive around town. it's just WRONG.

I agree with your statements so long as they are made the way you did. Nobody needs a vehicle like this for commuting and daily driving. I hate the "people hauler" and "boat hauler" speeches. I too haul people and boats and timber and iron all the time. So I went ahead and I bought myself a F250 crew cab diesel and what do you know, it already gets 18 mpg and with the money I saved not buying an Escalade (which wasn't rated to pull my boat BTW) I bought something enjoyable to commute to work with, a K1200GT...

Interesting to know it took 3 major automotive corporations(including GM) to come up with some sort of 2 Mode hybrid system weather it's from GM only or with other corps in the R&D dept, to come up with poor milage? and this is also mated with active fuel management system! Starting with GM? Back to the drawing board for you buddy...b/c the other auto corps who joined hands with GM on the 2 Mode Hybrid product just used you as a guinnea pig in the spotlight...LMAO!!! Wow, so much for all that sqwabble about the LS600hl...Lexus must be grinning just a little bit...LMAO!!!

This car weighs a lot more than the LS600hL, so its mileage is obviously worse, but they're both terrible.

So does the idiot that wrote the article not think about how much fuel you will save over a years time with 6MPG savings?!? Hopefully the hybrid version will not be priced too much to make it impractical like most hybrids.
Funny how people just don't get that other people NEED a large vehicle for a family. Not everyone in the US is single and live in over congested cities! It would be silly for single person, rap stars excluded to buy a large SUV. Studies have shown that in the States more people would purchase a large SUV if fuel cost were not a concern...chew on that.

nobody NEEDS a vehicle this large. if you have 3 or 4 kids they can fit just fine in a minivan.

escalade SUV is really needless, like most SUV's on the road of its size. they can easily opt for a minivan or a smaller mid-sized suv.
its neither practical or efficient in 99% of the owners use. most think that SUV's are safe for their family, but truly they provide higher risk.
if you need a bigger vehicle, minivan should be your choice, they are spacious, have descent towing capabilities, and are very fuel efficient.
and unless you pull your 25ft boat constantly, i see no need for such SUV's.

As for the comment that most hybrids aren't cost effective, that's wrong. That's old thinking, from when hybrids cost $10,000 more and gas was $2.00 per gallon.
If you keep a car til it dies like I do, gas savings could be $10,000 per year vs. a comperable car/SUV..and thats based on $3.25 gas...who's to say it won't continue higher in price during the life of you car. Also, tax savings can be considerable. For the Escape Hybrid, for example, you get $3000 off you taxes(not $3000 credit off your income, but $3000 cash) in addition to the huge gas savings of the hybrid model. Plus in California there are all kinds of other benefits like driving in the car pool lane free, not having to get a costly smog check etc etc. We could put a serious dent in fuel useage if everyone got a hybrid.
I see Prius' advertised for less than $19,000 new here in CA. If you include the tax savings, fuel savings and other benefits its a no brainer choice for a mid sized car..they are nice cars, and can go faster and accelerate quicker than most gas hogs..just as Al Gore'sson who got ticketed going over 100MPH in one!

I meant $10,000 in gas cost savings over the life of the car/not per year. In extreme cases it could even be double that..ie a Prius vs. a 20mpg car over the
175,000 to 200,000 mile life of the car.

Well, that's true. But the Escalade Hybrid will be $20,000 more and gas is $3.50/gallon. So now it's even worse.
