LA Auto Show: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid aiming for 26mpg
Porsche showed their new Cayenne Hybrid Concept to the North American market for the first time at this year’s LA Auto Show.

While Porsche is targeting a fuel-economy of 24 mpg, future developments may allow Porsche engineers to push the Cayenne hybrid to 26 mpg. The Stuttgart auto maker is targeting an improvement in fuel-consumption of about 25 percent.

Porsche says that their Cayenne Hybrid can run on battery power alone when the SUV is cruising at speeds at 75mph.

Nice execution (body can always use some work though), 24mpg from an SUV with reduced emissions.
GM with its 20mpg hybrid-Tahoe.

The car companies must know something we don't for once, perhaps SUVs will be removed from the "pollute all you want" category taht would basically kill diesels.

They'll be loathe to admit it, but we can thank Toyota-Honda for showing everyone that there's always a better way if you learn to think outside the box rather than following the herd.

Wait till the audi 4.2 TDi hits the USA or the V12 or the MB 450CDI or the BMW V8 TT Diesels arrive, then you will see what is Killed.

Oh, really? Because Mercedes's Bluetec engine, Audi's 3.0TDI and BMW's diesel sixes are some of the cleanest engines in the world.

Yep, because we all know the Lexus RX400h is a serious competitor to the Porsche Cayenne onroad and offroad and on the track. Yep!

To be fair, a Cayenne is larger, heavier car than the RX (weighs over 100 kilos more) so 24 MPG is admirable, especially since it has a proper 4WD system (engine powers all wheels unlike RX), a regular transmission, low range gearbox, and is quicker and has a larger engine.
On the European cycle they are aiming for 30 UK MPG, which is less than the RX400h officially but the RX usually gets about 28 UK in tests. I shall have to see what this Cayenne achieves in real life before I make any real judgment.

Rupert said it pretty well, Xero.

I don't even consider the RX and Cayenne to be competitors. Your statement would have made more sense if you compared the Cayenne to the Lexus LX Hybrid: if it existed.

"And because the current benchmark in the hybrid luxury crossover is so irrelevant."

The RX isn't "the benchmark." It sells the best... but it's nothing exceptional. The Cayenne, X5, Infiniti FX and even Acura MDX all do many things better.

I'm really a bit disappointed that Porsche took the hybrid rout instead of the diesel rout. Any word on transmission? CVT's just ruin cars IMO.

6 speed tiptronic. They have been clever with how it works so it drives like a normal Cayenne but with quite a few batteries instead of a spare wheel.
