Lexus IS Coupe spotted?
there isnt much to say. this is the text that has been posted with the article.

"As for the accompanying text, there’s some horsepower number ranging from 177 to 423, which translates right across the entire IS lineup, from the 220d to the IS-F. There’s also mention of a 2009 release, and if that’s true, it means there’s plenty more information coming down the pipeline very shortly."

Right, ok, because BMW has soul ownership of a idea of a car with 2 doors and/or a retractable roof....

Really S4? Then why do their cars lack driver involvement? If anyone is closely following BMW it's Infiniti, more so than MB, Audi or Lexus. And you know that.

jeeka 715 and S4cabriofoxone, perhaps BMW got its inspiration from Ford's retractable hardtop half a century ago. I don't like Ford but I'll give Ford credit for this one.

Looks like an RHT. They aspire to have a line-up similar to BMW with the entry-level near luxury segment. Another so called Lexus to do battle here in the states with BMW. EL34 is right!

...right, because when Audi or Mercedes do it, it's good for competition, when a Japanese company does it, it's simply "copycatting". Lemme guess, when the RX300 was out years before either the X5, ML or Q7, all 3 probably had prototypes LOOOONG before Lexus, right?

You ladies never cease to amaze me.

If we want to discuss luxury "SUV's", well, Daimler-Benz had them a long time ago specifically beginning in 1904, then again in 1933 and 1936. Just a little historical fact I am going to insert here for the sake of seeing some "interesting" responses.

vman1013vman1013 - 2/27/2008 11:43:02 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
BMW didn't need to build its own SUV in 98 when the RX came out because it owned Land Rover. They developed the X5 because there was no way to combine the performance of a BMW with the off road capabilities of Land Rover's. In 2000, BMW sold Land Rover to Ford and came out with the X5. So no, BMW did not copy Lexus with the X5.

A fabric roof deteriorates in the sun -- another deliberate effort to make the car look used and as obsolete as possible in the shortest time.

Simple.....The German fans gets jeolous and scared. They scared of Lexus. So when you say it's coming it scares them. They hate it. It eats them away because they do know that's it's going be just as better than the 3 and if not surpass them....

EnnNorakEnnNorak - 2/28/2008 5:53:38 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
silver1, fans don't get scared only manufacturers do. Fans are not loyal -- just ask any retailer who loses 20% of his customers every year and has to scramble for new ones. It's all about getting value for your money these days. Unfortunately there are plenty of marketing guys in the auto industry who don't know the meaning of value and that is why many auto makers are still taking shortcuts like leaving out front passenger seat height adjustment in SUVs, installing seat cushions that are too short or too firm etc etc.

43LE, no it's not easy at all. A FWD vehicle usually has a transversely mounted engine (which I hate BTW) so the first thing you have to do is change to a longitudinally mounted engine configuration. This affects weight distribution and may require cabin changes to preserve interior room. It's best to design a car at the beginning as either FWD (which I hate) or RWD and not change a FDW design to a RWD design later.

Using your logic, all of you Lexus fanboys must have DNA from the small dirty Jap war criminals who we know lost the war as well.
The Darwin effect will take effect and hopefully the jap nips will cease to exist.

Now seriously, is racism cool? Why bring up something that happened 65 years ago. And it's not like you japanese fanboys are supporting cars from a clean perfect country either. So shut up.

Just to tell you, fastonekiller is right. The IS has never won against the 3 in a comparison test.

Vendetta, stop re-living WW 2. The Germans were the best mechanical engineers during the war and never lost that touch. The Nazis were a minority who took control of government by undemocratic means. I've seen plenty of post-war Jewish businessmen drive Mercedes and BMW cars, so what's up with you about all that Nazi shit?

Maybe in the US, but its not even close to the 3er worldwide, unless you throw in the its Camry clone.

Two car strategy? The ES does not compete with the 3 at all. The BMW is a sports sedan like the IS while the ES is an upscale camry. Combining both ES and IS sales is like combining 3 and future 1 series sales.

To bulldogz, yes BMW wanted an SUV before Toyota/"Lexus. The E53 X5 was debated by the BMW board of directors in 1991. The X5 was approved in early 1992. Prototypes were running around in 1993. They actually did a teardown of the leading SUV at the time (dangerous Ford Explorer) in 1991 in the US. They found halfway through the teardown that it was so flawed they didn't finish the teardown.

BMW went their own way, since they are independent. Mercedes also was working on the 1st gen M-Class. BMW takes 7 years from concept to showfloor. Was Toyota working on the RX in 1991? No.

To autopro, do you know why Hank Aaron got death threats? Because he is a black man. Just like Tiger Woods gets. Just like Michael Jordan got. Just like Donovan McNabb still gets! Tony Dungy has armed security furnished by the NFL.

What does that have to do with BMW fans and Toyotas aka Lexus? Please explain so we know where that came from?

This is one car I've been waiting for awhile now to be unveiled.

I hear the reason it's taking so long is because Lexus was holding off on the release to see how well the IS sedan performed in the marketplace. I guess since sales have been positive they've finally decided to give the go ahead.

Therefore I'd expect it to look the exact same as the sedan minus 2 doors, which isn’t bad because the sedan already has all the proportions of a coupe.

If it is a hardtop convertible, I hope they make it a more squared off roofline rather than and eliptical one.

fastone,
We know its too much for you to comprehend.

ES for those seeking more luxury
IS for those seeking more performance.

It's not our fault BMW can't do either, especially the luxury part.

The IS350 coupe will come with a Hardtop that will fold up/down in less then 15 seconds! We can expect it here in the US later this year and no its not just a regular IS minus 2 doors. It was purposely built from the ground up to be convertible/coupe.
