Arguably one of the more controversial rides to make an appearance in 2010 is the BMW 5GT.

With questionable looks, but from what others have told me, an awesome ride, it is a vehicle that has become quite polarizing.

One thing that stands out though: I have yet to see one -- other than BMW manufacturer cars with "DTM" plates -- on the road.

On the other hand, the controversial Porsche Panamera, which is a lot more expensive mind you, have been spotted in the New York tri-state area in droves.

The intriguing thing about the 5GT is that it is a full-on niche vehicle. There is no true competitor, as the closest comparable is an Acura ZDX that is basically an SUV. And, it does not look like it will be changing anytime soon.

Lexus and Infiniti have both claimed it is not going to happen.

With that said, we want to know are Lexus and Infiniti doing the right thing by playing it safe OR are they missing out on a golden chance?

Plenty of words written and opinions expressed about the luxury midsize hatchbacks recently launched by BMW AG (550i GT) and Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Acura unit (ZDX). Most of the talk hasn't been complimentary -- the new cars' polarizing styling seems to be mostly polarizing toward the negative.

American buyers famously don't favor hatchbacks, even in the lower market segments, so the introduction of the big-money 550i GT and the ZDX -- and to a lesser extent, Honda's new Accord Crosstour and Toyota Motor Corp.'s Venza -- has generated a lot of what-were-they-thinking criticism.

But if BMW and Acura are on the leading edge of a latent new consumer trend, some of their rivals don't think so. Like the critics, two Japanese competitors think luxury hatchbacks currently are a bridge too far...
