Those right wacky Brits at AutoExpress say they have the scoop on the Lexus LF-A, caught recently during a track-testing session.

AE says the V8 vs V10 debate is over, with the V10 taking a victory lap.

The ten banger, producing at least 500 hp, is based on Toyota's former F1 powerplant, AE says.

I guess the point is that every Jap MFR can make a 500hp 5.0L V10. It's not really some big deal of engineering achievement an Euro MFR brags about.

Kind of wonder where Merc and Audi is after the LF-A and next NSX comes out w/ NA 5.0 V10? Are they going back to turbo?

Well, no because Lexus is charging more than twice as much for they're V10; 3 years after the BMW V10 already achieved the 100hp/liter for a cool 80 grand. A $170,000 supercar with 100+hp/liter isnt an achievement, its expected.

I don't think LEXUS is gonna be that price range. Think about it, only Mercedes can command that kind of price, not even BMW. Second, at least NSX for sure is gonna be under $80K.

To be more precise, @ 4.8 sec 0-60, M5, or M6, was never intended to be at the level of NSX or GT-R. I personally think BMW will soon be adding product line to compete w/ those new supercars from Japan. AUDI has started w/ its R8, no matter if you like that redundant AWD or not.

What you 'personally think' is irrevelant. The price has already been announced to be well above $100,000, look it up.

And no, at no point did I say that BMW is innexpensive. I implied that BMW has already produced a 100+hp/liter V10 selling it for far cheaper than Lexus plans to sell their V10.

If you make a N/A supercar and sell for well over 100k, it better have 100+hp/liter. I don't wonder what the Europeans will do, they will raise the bar on N/A engines once again.

I've looked it up and like the way you put it, I can also say what the source said is irrelevant since it's never confirmed by LEXUS. Think about it, how much luxury LEXUS has to add to justify that kind of price difference from a 60K GT-R of about same or better performance. Even a 911 turbo is "only" $123K.

As I said, German can do it, Jap can also. A NA RX-8 can output 180hp/L, so how much should it be compared to the NA 105hp/L BMW M? It's more of a bussiness decision rather than engineering. There's no marketing pressure for Jap to do it ahead of German as they cannot command that pricing level anyway.

Remember, it has always been the German car pressured by Jap, not the other way around, isn't?

Utahnkid- Learning the hard way through racing and varies generations of cars is what made Ferrari, M-B, Lambo, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Hell even honda what they are today. Without the experiance a company can't build and improve. I'm sure Lexus/Toyota will as they have with each model generation. Money doesn't make a great car alone. Take Toyota F1 Largest budget 0 wins. Ferrari large budget 50+ year of racing countless wins and world titles.
I hope the LF-A or what ever production name does well and it will sell, it'll just make everyone else work harder. And who wins with that you and I.

The Qaundt family will never sell, GM tride years ago. Why would you fire some of the best engineers in the world?

I can't speak for the rest of the world since I reside in the US, but improve the brand? You mean the best selling luxury auto maker (in the US) for the past 10 years in a row is not enough? Why would anyone try to compete with the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini or Pagani ? Pedigree is the name of the game in this league - something Lexus definitely lacks. 15 years of s u c c e s s f u l participation in Formula1 or DTM would also help - the agony seen in the past decade doesn't count...

Why not sell this as a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) limited series ? Teaming up with PSP and Wii would definitely help marketing

I smell fear. We all know it wasn't a secrete the NSX did not sell well, Acura actually lost money making the cars considering they were hand assembled. The NSX though wasn't about sales, it prove that Acura could hang with the big boys, it made many European and American super cars rethink there philosiphy. Motor Trend named it "the best sports car ever built". Lexus I think will do the same as long as they get the respect in the industry, they will make there money on their other vechicles if this one actually doesn't sell.
Just like people have said before don't try to kill something that has yet to begin. Next year NSX will return and be the final nail in the Europeans coffin.

Lexus is known for luxury cars, not exciting sports cars.
Lexus lacks history and the performance of Lamborghini and Ferrari.
People shopping in this segment want "brand names" with prestige.
I don't think it will sell well except with hard-core Lexus fanboys.

Stick with making luxury vehicles lexus.

But Lexus' parent company, Toyota, has a history of building sports cars, eg. Supra, Celica and MR2.

I wouldn't call the Celica and MR2 super cars. Sports cars is already pushing it. The Supra is one of my favorite. That is the closest thing Toyota has come to making a super car. It's the Japanese version of a supercar along with the RX-7, NSX, GT-R.

Lexus Supercar: anyone here remembers the Toyota 2000GT ? It was all about soul and passion. You could say some styling elements were tributes to other makes (Jag/Lotus comes into my mind first), still it was an original by Japanese standards. Considering the price was higher than the 911 Carrera, you could call it a Lexus of the day.

They built them for three years. Backed by no racing heritage at all, the things just died on the market. I truly believe you cannot sell real sport cars without circuit success. Just look at the examples of Bizzarini or Caparo.

Buck- Lexus cluster are nice to look at but the Germans are better to read in all conditions. I drive these cars everyday all day I'm paid to do it.

The Z8 was not billed as a supercar from BMW. Only the M1 was considerd a Supercar.
The Mclaren F1 the greatest supercar is powered by a BMW V12.

If it wasnt for Mercedes, Lexus would not have a backbone to stand on, Lexus has always depended on Mercedes to drop out a new design theme, and Lexus has always picked up the leftovers from Mercedes and claim it as there own. And now finally they are trying to create there own design theme the L-finess, PLEASE! Toyota-Lex just do what you are best at, COPYING.

Actually VW did all of this back in the late 80's or early 90's on a Golf, except the hybrid. The Germans are looking at a long term fix Hydrogen, diesle and the Hybrids are not quite a great at fuel consuption as most believe.

Example 08 RX350 140 miles trip at avg. speed of 38mph uses qtr tank of 93oct. 08 RX400h same trip half a tank. cars tested 14 back to back. Same olds true for GS450/430.

LS600hl just hitting the streets don't know yet.

each veicle was driven at the same time, same drivers, petrol, oil, tires, time of day over a 2 week period. Traffic and stop lights were out of our control.

15 years hybrids will be better but still burning petrol.

EPA ratings are shit no matter what brand of car. My drivers average 224000K miles a month (20 drivers 2800miles wk each) in every thing from Lexus to Porsche and we never see anything close to EPA.

Nobody drives like the EPA thats why there numbers are shit. Look don't get your panties in such a not, I'm not bashing Lexus I think there great vehicles and do luxury better than any main stream brand. If 14 different vehicles is empratical than so be it. How many different cars do you drive a day, week, month? This is what I do for a living. All my numbers and knowledge is real world everyday experiance. I'm glad lexus is producing a supercar they should, will it be as good as a GT, Ferrari, Lambo no. More reliable easier to use everyday of course. Thats not the point of a supercar. Go drive a F430, LP640 hell a 911cs there raw a little untamed exciting. If you don't understand after that know one can help you.

How do EPA fuel economy numbers come to a post of a V10 Lexus sport car ?

Mr. Wiedeking, Porsche CEO said when taking over VW last year: "no more toys, please". He was referring to the pricey Phaeton, Bugatti and Lamborghini excursions of VW. I am sure sooner or later there will be a Jap exec as well to say the same about the GS450h, Tundra and LF-A penis enlargers that were doomed never to make any money.

I gotta agree with BUCKFUSH on a lot of fronts.........People sh it themselves when a company they don't dig comes out with something innovative, and the haters come in time to whine about it. Lexus is one of the only few companies that are truly doing some really progressive changes, and lets face it, the "Top" doesn't stay that way forever. Lexus is coming up. And yeah, I love ferrari's and any other exotic, but this lexus looks and sounds pretty damn amazing. BMW? Great.......look at the new m3 reviews, OUCH! Mercedes, where's your supercar, and not the one Chysler built before you(ME 412). Porsche? Whats new? The only thing that makes me say "DAyAm" is what the tuners are doing to porsche's. So give it a break.........if you like cars, you should like this one. All you label whores are tired.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the (REPREHENSIBLE) Toyota/Lexus people.....
