Evidently lining up for a V6 engine, the Lexus LS is expected to come with Toyota’s 3.5 –liter powerplant tuned to generate 310 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, comparable to the BMW 740i. The 740i, which is for sale in Europe, comes with a 3.0-liter inline engine that can generate 326 hp and 332 lb-ft.

The numbers of the Lexus LS are a bit lower than that of the BMW 740i, but since the V8-propelled LS460 is already less heavy than the 740i, the extra weight saved by the Lexus V6 is expected to permit it to move along okay. If the V6 LS succeeds, it probably won’t reach the American markets because of the trend among car makers not to bring their more economical products Stateside. For example, BMW makes its 7 series available in Europe with a 3.0-liter diesel.
