Lexus RX Prototype Caught Testing In Germany
Prototypes for the next-generation Lexus RX SUV have been spotted in Germany and this time the heavy camouflage that masked previous test cars is no longer present.

The SUV’s distinctive profile can clearly be seen as can some of the details of the new head and taillights. The prototypes also reveal that the final design of the new RX will be heavily influenced by the lines of the LF-Xh hybrid SUV concept from last year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

The tall and blunt front end kind of reminds me of the Aztec.

I loved the LF-Xh concept so much...but this?

Here's a few LF-Xh pics in matte black in the Toyota Mega Web complex in Tokyo (source: The Passionate Pursuit)

This looks like the 3rd gen RX is going to be more evolutionary than revolutionary.

In other words, not even close to the LF-Xh concept; which, in its own way, was a pretty good looking vehicle.

Looks to close to the first generation, this is a testament to the toyota "play it safe design".

these days you'd think that with 'computers' and such, gosh maybe non-European car companies would be more capable of replicating their concepts.

BUT NO. Instead, here's how it goes down:

Bitchin Concept! +10 points
Bonus Fanfare! +1 point

Underpaid designers: -3 points
Overpaid managers: -4 points
3 years of delays: -2 points

FINAL PRODUCT: Ugly P.O.S. w/ BULGING FENDERS. 2 points.

so... the RX is going to be like the Lexus 911 -- new models look basically exactly the same as the old one.

yes, except that the 911 is GORGEOUS piece of design.

how could you even put those two cars in the same sentence?

Bland. Toyota seems to be using the simple approach of: If the appliance isn't broke, don't fix it. It seems to have a look similar of the old IS wagon in the back side profile and with the camo and all looks like a Subie Impreza from the rear view. Either way, no new groundbreaking design here. Bland.

It's still broke if the spare wheel remains exposed to winter salt and mud under the floor instead of being in a proper wheel well inside the vehicle.

Wow! So hot, I swear. It keeps the shape of the current RX (best looking car in class IMO) but looks more dynamic already. Damn this thing is going to kick ass s badly!

Lexus needs to drop a V8 under the hood though and also create an RX-F. Time to embarrass the ML63 AMG and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GTS.

Embarrass an ML and Porsche Cayenne. No SUV's have the straight line numbers of the ML63 or a Cayenne Turbo.

Plus it's different consumers and different price range.

Yeah, because a front wheel drive rx with a v8 would handle sooooo well. I'd bet it would have no torque steer or under steer even though it is a front wheel drive setup. .............. SHUT UP!!!!

Looks more like a refresh update than a redesign. If it ain't broke don't fix it is definitely the theme although I do still like the RX a lot. At least they didn't go butcher it up like they did with the new Highlander, god that is awful looking now.

Yawn.

Is it still going to be built on the same platform as the Sienna MINIVAN?

400hp is going to be a handling nightmare in this thing.

I'll take a FX50 instead.

The FX is not a comparo car. The FX competes with the X6 as a crossover. The RX is an SUV. The RX competes more closely to the MDX, X5, etc.

at first glance, i thot this was a BREAKTHRU in suv design, with the always fussy C-pillar pushed back to where the D-pillar normally resides.

but on seeing the full spread of photos, i see there is still a dopey looking C-pillar, albeit shrunken down.

in any case, in the 4Runner, toyota still has the CLASSIEST, cleanest looking C-pillar, and overall profile of ANY suv.

so classy, that even Benz shamelessly COPIED it.

the other day, i THOT i saw a 4Runner turning in front of me. turned out it was just a copycat MB.

yeah, go ahead and deboost me. you blind fools just cannot face up to THE TRUTH.

the 4Runner is one of the best looking SUVs out there. why should the RX NOT borrow a style element from its brother? mercedes did!

the RX dares to step out of the "me too" looks of all the boring competition.

I wonder how the "Pebble Beach" edition will look? Do not blame Lexus for playing it safe. They know their market. Neigbor has two, first and second version, can't tell the difference. Couple is in late 60's. Don't expect future ES do be radically different

being more visually literate AND PERCEPTIVE than most, i can say that aside from radical designs (like 4-door "coupes"), this has one of the most interesting D-pillar designs.

and hence, one of the most distinctive profiles among SUVs, which ALL TEND to look similar and boring in side views.
