Lexus files U.S. and Canadian patent for IS Coupe
While everyone was running around scared on April 15 getting their taxes done, Lexus was busy filing a patent for the upcoming Lexus IS Coupe. According to the my.IS fourm Lexus filed applications with both the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Canadian Trade-Marks Office for IS250C, IS300C and IS350C trademarks.

We expect the same powertrain lineup to be fitted into the IS Coupe from the IS250, IS300 and IS350. The Lexus IS Coupe will go head-to-head with the BMW 3-Series Coupe, Audi’s A5 and the upcoming Cadillac CTC (or CTS Coupe).

What we’re waiting for is the confirmation of a Lexus...

Germans have been building over 100 years, stupid, but now Toy\lexus is here to challenge them with more money than all the germans combined.

^^^ was intended to be under Stash84's comment. (the server here must have the same supplier for components as the germans.)

Let's just hope that they don't come out with a convertible option. The IS (this generation, anyway) wouldn't look too good as a convertible. But maybe the next generation IS?

From my understanding, The 2009 Lexus IS is suppose to have a Facelift with some upgraded interior.

Well, the curves and lines on the IS are too defined and sharp to look good without a top so I'm going to have to stick with my opinion that the IS will have to be redesigned.

this generations convertible is just fine. You will see them next production year.

Agreed. This is an original-looking vehicle, but I don't see it translating well into coupe (or even convertible) form. If anything, it's TOO rakish.

I don't know about that yet, a lot of cars look really good from that quarter angle pic. I'd have to see a profile and the rear to really be able to judge this vehicle.

They do sell the IS300 in certain Asian and Middle-Eastern countries. The lack of consistent premium fuel in those countries prevent the use of direct fuel injection so the 3GR-FE 3.0L engine is used instead.

they just cut the IS250 because its substantially underpowered. Throw in the old 3 liter from the previous gen and make it 230 horses

Judging by the reaction to my last comment maybe I was wrong, Lexus doesn't take too long to release their most anticipated products!?

Come on guys I'm not even stating anything negative about Lexus & you're still all over my comment like it screams bias! How can you disagree?

5-years waiting on the introduction of the LF-A, heard rumors of the IS-F forever until Lexus finally made it a reality, & the IS coupe was rumored to debut 2-3 years after the sedans release.

I would think the Lexus guys are growing crazy with anticipation by now, no?

Of course it will look better as a coupe, the sedan already has all the proper proportions.
Lexus though, the really make us wait around for their most anticipated products...IS-F, LF-A, IS Coupe. Get it on the road already!

The current generation IS debuted in late '05 as and '06. It's soon approaching the '09 model year and they have yet to make a coupe? How are they suppose to compete with other luxury nameplates without diversity in they're line up? They haven't had a real coupe in 8 years (the current SC doesn't count). I think this is what they needed since the first generation IS. One thing we can say about lexus is they sure like to take their time. I guess they're not to quick to put crap out on the they streets. Like look how long the 1st generation LS went without a major overhaul while Infiniti shot themselves in the foot with the 3rd generation Q45 (97-01).

toyota/lexus has ALWAYS been very conservative with their two door models.

compare how many honda accord/civic and altima coupes you see, compared to camry 2-doors. (WHAT! some mite say, there is a 2-dr camry??? yep. called the camry Solara. that's how uncommon they are. and there have NOT been ANY corolla coupes for a loooong time.)

maybe the demographics of toyota buyers just overwhelmingly go for sedans. so when they DO put out a coupe, it stays around for a long time until they sell enuff to justify a FRESH 2 dr. (last solaras were based on previous generation camrys.)

so understandably, they take their time making sure there IS a market for coupes. and even then, must design them conservatively to LAST a number of years before freshening.

unless this is a photochop you can see the cut outs for the folding roof at the A pillar. this car would be great as a standard coupe but even better if it has the pano roof option that the mercedes sl does.
