Long Live The New King? The G37 Has Finally Unseated The BMW 335i
Thanks to XeroK00L for the tip on this posting;
Due to an embargo placed by Motor Trend, I was required to keep this internal until Monday, June 25th. We (Infiniti) got this sent to us by Motor Trend a few weeks ago. Attached is the cover and article of the Aug. 2007 issue of Motor Trend for the G37 Coupe that is suppose to hit news stands this week!

Interesting to see the mention of the oil overheating issue in the 335i under spirited driving. This is like the 5th or 6th time I have heard this claim.
I hope they address this before we see the twin turbo hit the street in any number.

look at all the pathetic fools (german lovers) who keep on talking about how they personally feel about how a german car always drives better than the Japanese ones. Well you guys are contradicting road tests done by professional and are being pathetically prejudiced. Just get over it, the G37 is the better car. Although i am sure that M3 can trump the G37 with ease. Whenever I visit this blogs, all i see is a bagful of rubbish talks of pro german biase, please be rational rather than constricted in your biased views.

Infiniti is poised to make significant inroads into well established domains, once enjoyed singularly by BM.
The Skyline will have similar affect over the M3 when it comes out.
The difference will be that the Japanese will wear the crown much more humbly, and respectfully, than the poor-sports who are currently in the process of being de-throned.
Admit it,....it was a nice ride, a long tenure,...but there is a new player in town,...and the survival of the fittest is replacing the ONE who wears the crown !!!
BMW,....be a good sport,....step down gracefully,...it isnt becoming of a champion (past) to act so immature.
Infiniti has outdone you,.......period. accept it!!!!

What's really pathetic is that BMW now has to resort to twin-turbo to outpower competitor. Since when BMW just discard their lovely NA heritage and take the shortcut? Twin-turbo is such a easy solution both for engineering and marketing, but it's so un-German.

congrats to infiniti on the new g37!
why is the IS being brought up? i don't see it on the magazine cover?
let them launch the is coupe first, then test it VS both the 335 and g37 instead of trying to get take infiniti's moment of glory.

BMW is just overhyped, and has been kicked ass left and right even by the old man Benz. IS350 runs as fast and handle as good as 335i.
But Infiniti did a poor job too by making the G37 too heavy thus too thirsty. Can Nissan develop a 6 speed auto?

that and the king is dead title was overhyped, and wishful thinking, the g37 won out because of its price and the overheating thing (why would bmw not check this first before submitting one to a test of the volume leader in the segment...seems odd) thats like saying if they were the same price, and it didnt overheat the g would have lost.

So the 335i performs better, has a better interior and looks way better, but the infinite is cheaper?
I'll take the BMW over the ininite, even if its close.

its infiniti, learn to spell.
the bmw seems to beat g37 in the speed test by milliseconds while the G37 was better at handling as the DSP kept the 335i in check but the overheating part is a factor since the g37 smoked the 335
i know you have a x5 and all but that 335i interior was horrible, it looked like a 80s deck system just smashed in as the center console.
The infiniti's interior was simple and clean but they spoilt it by cramming the navigation controls at the top.
+ factoring in prices difference, the G37 looks like a narrow winner but i think its a overall tie.

Here in Europe I haven't heard a single thing about overheating the twin-turbo engine.. strange.
There isn't a hair on my head that even considers the Infiniti. This doesn't change anything. BMW is still the champ.
ps: I think the comparo would be more fair if the BMW also had the (full) M-sport package.

Americans tend to exaggerate things. It's just our nature. According to folks here, every single BMW sold breaks down on the side of the road. I'll admit, I hate being an American sometimes, we're fools when it comes to cars and pretty much everything else.

Motor Trend... were that the blokes who preferred the Hyundai Veracruz over the Lexus RX350?
Why? because the overall package (read: PRICE) was better
Did the best car win? no
As much as I hate the RX350, I would still buy one over the Hyundai.
And the very same principle applies here.

Yes.
They are also less efficient.
Turbos (and most engines really) work well in cool temperatures, in areas of high pressure (like valleys, not hills).
Death Valley in Canada would be very good for a turbo'd car.

Yes, as Rupert said, modern engines perform better at cool ambient temperature and high atmospheric pressure. Turbocharging or supercharging doesn't change that.
Rupert, I'm not sure where you got the idea turbocharged engines were less efficient - at least, certainly not less efficient per horsepower. Did you mean less efficient per displacement?
Engine cooling is critical for all high-horsepower engines, whether naturally aspirated or not.

Turbos are less efficient in warmer climates, and lower pressure areas.
and

Another number: G37s runs 3mph faster than "the ultimate driving machine" 335i Sport through their slalom tests.
The 335i Sport barely outhandles IS350 with luxury package. 335i ran faster because BMW likes to send them over-boosted one.

So what?
That basically only tells me the Infiniti had better tires and some sort of sportspackage. That's it.
It doesn't tell me how the cars make me feel when I drive them. It doesn't tell me how good a car is. It tells nothing.
Together with "skidpad" they mean nothing and make no sense at all.
Actually I believe European magazines don't even do those silly skidpad tests.

Infiniti : The Ultimate Budget Machine
BMW is always ahead of the curve, and Infiniti is always playing catch-up. This will not change.
I drive a 335i coupe, and you couldnt pay me to buy an infiniti. Theyre built like crap. The interiors are junk and the cost-cutting shows on every aspect of the vehicle.
It may be fast, handle nicely, and look snazzy, but its not a world class car like the BMW is and always will be.

Whatever Common, if that makes you feel more special, so be it. Do you want my VIN number or my production number from when she was built? I own an Alpine White over Black/Aluminum 335i coupe purchased in St.Louis Missouri at Autohaus of Clayton BMW. Ive had her a little over 3 months and have had no issues whatsoever.
And regarding my sanity, Im 26 years old, run my own business and probably make more money in a month than you make all year. So be careful who you call out. If I were to believe YOU actually own a 335i, then we're supposed to be family, so be a little nicer.
And yes, I really dislike Infiniti's. I took the bait and fired away, sue me.

Its kind of funny that you guys are dissing Motor Trend now since the BMW lost. Motor Trend really likes the BMW 3 and they do hold it as their benchmark, but I guess the problem here is the loss. I mean if you guys think that this was unfair to the BMW then it was unfair to the G35 (second gen) when it lost to the BMW 330i even though it put up better test numbers and won 4 out of 5 categories last year. Motor Trend picked the G37 as the winner as did Edmunds.com. I guess you are waiting to read the comparison held by Car and Driver because that is going to be a sure win for the BMW.

the 3-series has won hundreds of comparisons, been on the C&D ten best list for 15+ years and still outsells the IS and the G COMBINED.
the G is a great car, but i still think the 3 offers the best combination of style and performance in it's class. plus you can get it in a coupe, sedan, wagon or convertible. still on top.

Truthfully, I love BMW, but I think that the new generation 3ers are not as "raw" of a sports car as the E46 generation, but they are still better, by far, than Infiniti.
Of course, that is my opinion.
I think the G37 will compete more with the IS350, than anything else.

dugit, let me put the sales issue in perspective for you:
There are a total of 41 available 335i Coupes on dealer lots in the entire U.S. That's right, 41 TOTAL, for a vehicle that's been out since October. And if you take out the West Coast there are only 18. EIGHTEEN for 75% of the country. And wait, there's more. There are only 58 available 328i Coupes (32 outside the West Coast) and 25 available 328xi Coupes (12 outside the West Coast). That's 124 coupes of any kind in the entire country, out of 400+ dealers, and only 52 of them are outside of the West Coast. Those are some remarkable sales statistics.
As for this test, I'm going to first point out something that everyone seemed to miss -- "we tested a BMW 335i Coupe that was supplied by Infiniti". It's amazing to me that we've heard no one else complaining about overheating and yet the two tests where the 335i DID overheat, the Edmunds.com G37 Infiniti press event first drive and this Motor Trend test, both were Infiniti sponsored events that involved BMW's that were supplied BY INFINITI. Curious coincidence.
And even if that's a non-issue the article clearly states the Infiniti won because it's cheaper, and that's not a surprise. They've always sold their cars as a value alternative to a real BMW, which is how they've won every test they've ever won. That includes the first test the 3-series ever lost (the 325i came second to a G35 four years ago) and the vaunted M45 that the media loved for 15 minutes two years ago. No test has ever said they were the best car in the class, but they've won based on being a solid, cheaper alternative, and that's fine. Good for Infiniti. But if you can afford the real thing, you don't have to buy the imitation stuff.

dugit, fair enough, I'll let you continue on perspective-free. Is it ok if I give some to everyone else though? You know, for people who like to not only be able to regurgitate facts they read but also understand them as well?
Since you did mentioned that Infiniti sold more coupes than BMW did the last 3-Series coupes, it's important to note that happened only one time, at the end of the E46 coupe model cycle when BMW cut production and then stopped making them entirely because they were getting ready to build the new one. As for that new coupe, I'd say when only one out of 10 dealers has a 335i Coupe at all to even show people (i.e. they're selling out into the order banks) that's pretty strong. The same is true for the 335i Convertible (and 328i/xi Coupe and Convertible). They’re sold out, not a bad position to be in for a car manufacturer. And as you said, “we’ll see” is right -- next year when the 135i Coupe comes out to compete price-wise with the G35 (while offering better performance) we WILL see. In the meantime I'm sure BMW is pretty happy with the results they've had so far, even if they do have to give up the budget market to a very solid G.

Dear Baapo,
I currently Lease a 2006 Audi A8L (with Sport Package), and have owned two BMW 3-series in the past. I have been perfectly happy with the performance of all three cars. (Being a large car with AWD, the Audi understeers more than the Bimmers, but the Audi can perform on a wet track while the BMWs can't, and the Audi can be driven in snow while the Bimmers can't.)
My Audi lease expires soon, and I have considered both the BMW 335i and the Infiniti G35 coupes. Both are fine cars, but unfortunately I'm too tall (6'4" tall, long-waisted) to fit comfortably in either car for long drives. (You can't order them without sunroofs, either.) I cannot fathom why so many car companies assume that people who buy high-performance cars are short!
If I want to get a coupe for my next car, I pray to God that the Audi A5 has gobs of headroom and legroom.

At the end is just matter of your personal choice. I hate to tell this but such as life: G37 is better. I love German cars and my personal choice MB is better than BMW, but if you are budget mind then BMW will be better choice. But in this compare the G37 clearly is the winner and not oly for the price if not by numbers. BMW still needing some help to work with turbos and in that case Alpine or even Mercedes will be able to teach some things about "Ultimate engineering".
335i is a losser if you compare this car with the excellence standard of BMW. They will not keep that on production for too long. Be honest, from now and on you will see the same history very often if BMW is not able to rise the bar again.

I agree with previous speculation that BMW sends overboosted testers to the press for review. This could be the reason that they are over heating. I know two people with 335i's and they don't overheat, even when driven hard. Regardless, BMW has been a problematic automobile for me in past ownership experiences.
I find the interior of the 3 series to be very basic and boring, as well potentially becoming dated quickly. The Infiniti's interior is beautiful, and has a very cockpit type layout.
Fuel economy is really not an issue with 12MPG SRT Hemi's rolling around today, and really driving these cars they way they were meant to who cares?
For some the BMW will continue to be their top pick because it will extend a part of their manhood that they lacked all their lives. For those people I say thank you Infiniti for making cars that make sense, not boost egos that lack confidence. To me the G37 is a sexy piece of work, and plays the part it shows off. The BMW as great as it is attracts the wrong client tell, like titsmagee who need a name to justify their means. I have never wanted to be that guy, and because of people like titsmagee BMW will not see me as a client, its become a brand for neuvous riche status seekers. The true enthusiast buys the G37, because they want a performance car not a name.
The BMW doesn't even offer a Limited Slip Differential? WTF?? You have to buy an M car before you get that, and that would make you a enthusiast not a status seeker (status seekers usually have a tighter budget than M car owners). Really though LSD would have no bearing on a status seekers opinion of a car, it should just go fast and have a propeller on the hood.
Its nice to the BMW as the loser this time, pretty soon the status seekers will realize that they are not much different.
Who knows if guys like titsmagee start to like Infinitis for the name one day I just might have to switch brands again. Maybe Kia will start to build nice performance cars too, I hear Hyundai has an up and coming sports car on the way...

They do. Just select the M-sport package WITH LSD.

Both are great cars. I have to still go with the 335 though. Infiniti still has no image in America, its as bad as owning a Kia.
Incredible though how well this car drives, but it should, it is a JDM Skyline and those cars are sensational.

That's not true. Owning a Kia is embarrassing. Owning an Infiniti is not. Infinitis turn heads. They're a good price for what you get and even though they aren't as good of quality as it's competitors, it's an all around good vehicle. Infiniti's image is increasing every day. Kia's doesn't.

This thread turned into a haters feast! Congratulations for Infiniti for making a car that would make BMW make a better car and so on. Its called competition which helps them both. But I'll still take the 335i over the G37. Remember it only lost because of the price.... and obviously if the infiniti was as expensive as any BMW nobody will buy it.

Exactly. The BMW is still - by far - the better car. With or without M-sport package. It still handles sharper, it is more refined and has a very strong image and reputation. Also the endless customization possibilities and brilliant BMW Individual all add up.
BUT..
The Infiniti won this comparo. Why? Because it wants to be a BMW and has the best value. And I totally get it, it's a BMW for less.
Would I buy it? Yes. Although the interior is rubbish, the exterior looks quite good - if you put some decent rims under it. And offcourse you get to enjoy the worlds best V6.
However, if I were allowed to spend more (in fact, much more) I would definitely go for the BMW. I would totally personalise it so there isn't another 335i like mine.
All things considered, Infiniti won this comparo fair.
ps I do not like the title on the magazine, it is simply there to attract readers and create wars like this.

SevorbeupstryIsBack, are you sure about this? I thought it had to be an M model.

Here in Germany, just ask your dealer and he will fit it. But you do have select the full M-sport package first.

Infiniti has been gunning for the 3 series since they introduced the G coupe/sedan, what makes some of you think that they do not have the resources to build a car that can beat the 3 series. The performance numbers between these cars is a wash, and stock for stock, neither car is going to run away from the other in ANY acceleration or handling situation. So we are left with purely subjective things to compare. I have sat in the 3 and the G35 sedan and I prefer the G's interior, the 3 looks dated to me, again a purely subjective attribute and other definitely feel differently, as both cars use quality materials, anyone who says the G interior is not comparable to the 3 series just has not sat in both cars. Exterior styling is also subjective and honestly, neither car strikes me as drop dead gorgeous, but I would not call either car ugly either (I have not seen the G Coupe in person, so this opinion might change).
Infiniti wins on value per dollar by miles, the 3 series has great resale but the G Coupe is no slouch in that regard, even with the sub-par 1st generation interior it HAD. Now that the car has a much higher quality interior, I imagine that resale value between the two cars will eventually be a wash also. So we are left with an 8K price difference and i'm sorry, but as good as the 3 series might be, it is NOT 8k better than the Infiniti if it is better at all. Lastly, it is laughable for people to keep saying that if you pick the G, then you must be just too poor to afford the 3 series. I drank that koolaid and bought an 04 745 and have owned it for almost 2 years now, it is a wonderful drive and I do enjoy it, but the 04 LS and Q45 that I drove were both at least 10K cheaper (almost 25K cheaper for the Q45) and I am sure would have been much more reliable. It taught me a valuable lesson when it comes to depreciating assets: "IMAGE IS NOTHING"...........
