Maserati Granturismo: $95k puts it head-to-head with Jaguar XKR
Maseratis have always been cheaper than people tend to think. When Maserati conducted a research they found out that people thought that Maserati cars were at the price level of a Aston Martin DB9 or a Bentley Continental GT rather than a Jaguar. And while that may be a compliment, people who could afford them were crossing Maseratis off the list thinking they coudn’t. Well now that they know, Maserati has unleashed its new Granturismo that is ready to take on the Jaguar XKR. And at £70k ($95,000) Maserati sits up strong against the Jaguar XKR.

Under the hood the Maserati Granturismo has a 4.2 liter V8 engine that delivers 405 horsepower giving it the ability to do 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 180 mph. And while that may be slighty less than the Jaguar XKR’s 4.2 liter V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower, who would want a Ford made Jaguar over a Italian Maserati? Plus, with the weight distribution of 49 in the front and 51 in the back, handing is right up to par topped off with big six-piston Brembo brakes.

Just look at it for a second. No really, take a very close look at every angle of the car, the more you look at it the more you see. As the man responsible for the design of the Maserati Granturismo would say “Today, many cars do one thing well. They are either straight and geometric, or sculptural and volumptuous. This car is both.” Guglielmo Caria, chief designer at Pininfarina, who is responsible for the Ferrari 599, faced many challenges making the big Granturismo look sleeker and smaller than it really is. However, looks can be deciving. While most 4-seater coupes have a cramped back seat which is usually used for a shelf rather than seats, the large Maserati Granturismo rear seat provide enough room for a 6-foot man to sit comfortably.

So if you are looking to spend $95k on you’re next car, hold off until the Maserati Granturismo hits dealerships this June.

Close race! But Jag is quicker, more powerful, slightly nicer on the inside and IMO looks sexier. You know what I'd take... but I still love this new Maser.

Again, I wonder, why was I de-boosted for saying almost exactly the same thing as the others on this thread? SOMEBODY's out to get me...

I think the Maser will sound great as well.

So it's a bad thing to look like an Aston Martin? I thing the DB9 is one of the most beautiful cars in the world and the Rapide concept takes sedan design to a whole new level that everyone including BMW wants to copy.

That being said, I do think the Maser is a more beautiful car than the Jag and a better buy. You know the engine is going to sound awsome, it's body is by Pininfarina and it's built by Ferrari, how could it possibly go wrong? Oh, yeah, I forgot. What tranny is in it?

CL 65 is still pushing 190K USD well at least where I live.

Yes, and it would probably cost Sevorbeupstry about $300K.

The Jag may be made by Ford, but it looks sexy.

This Maserati doesnt look as apealing. I probably would like a S550 over the Granturismo.

Jags are built in the UK. Ford is just the parent company; they didn't take over production, even though some of the cars are built on Ford UK and Ford U.S. platforms.

I like the Granturismo. Saw it in person at the NYC Auto Show and it was really hot! The Jaguar is a great looker as well...looks beefier were the Maser looks more svelte. I wouldn't mind either of them.

I have very little use for any Ford product, branded as a Jaguar or not. The only Jag I like is the XJ Super V8 but that is so grossly overpriced that I would be ashamed to own one and have everyone laugh at me for throwing money away. The Maser is far sexier than the Jag but, these days, the 500 hp V12 turbodiesel Audi Q7 is at the top of my wish list.

Ford does not make Jaguar. Ford owns Jaguar. There is a difference.

...and incidentally, I happen to like the Maserati better now that I have seen in in a ...more appropriate color scheme. Be that as it may I would still go with the Jaguar as a first choice.

..Yes, yes, no surprises from me.

I went to the Ferrari/Maserati dealership in Hinsdale this past weekend and damn I love the Quattroporte. I can't wait to see the GT in person. I think both the XKR and the GT are sexy. Just in different ways...

I got a promotion in the mail to drive a Q-Porte and get free Bose headphones (a little desperate?), and of course, I did. It's just an amazing sedan- I've driven it before, but it still blew me away!

I think it's the opposite- the Maser is more sleek and traditional, but the Jag is more muscular, and has a certain sex appeal that IMO the GT can't match.

This Maserati reminds me of a Chrysler Sebring, but the XK reminds me of a Taurus, so Maserati for me.

jagexpert, spare yourself the labor of replying to ignorant posters. I used to do that all the time- defending brands fiercely. It's just not worth it, though. Be content knowing that the "real" car fans know how fabulous Jaguars are.

Numbers aside I'd bet it is hard to beat the Ferrari-engineered engine of the Mas. And as much as I like the XKR, I'd also be willing to bet the Mas comes out as the better driver's car. Bring on the comparison tests.

Ford builds the motors for jag and aston ,some parts are taken from fords spare's bin.If i had to have one i would take the maser, but i would rather have 997 S 2wd with sports package and exhaust.

AM builds most of its own engines. Their V12s are old-school.

Jaguar, I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure they build their own V8, and share it with Land Rover.

Jaguar/Ford's XKR- needs a supercharger to equal the Maser's output. The power delivery of such an engine can NEVER be the equal of the naturally aspirated Maserati's. Naturally, this truth is lost on most super-coupe buyers few of whom even know of this simple fact.

The vanquish's V12 is two ford V6's joined as is the DB9. And yes i have read and heared of that(not made up)Evo magazine and Clarkson has stated that.

Jagexpert,

This conversation has reminded me of some things I wanted to ask you. Do you think Jaguar will bring back the V-12 engine into their line up?

In addition, It has been a while, but I was at the Jaguar-Porsche dealership [I prefer the Jaguar-Aston Martin-Rolls Royce dealership here: they are acutally more laid back] where they had a used oh 1990 or so I think XJS for sale, and plain as day on its technical specifications was the following: "V-16"

I asked about it, and the car had a V-16, now I didn't ask if it was put in later. Has Jaguar ever made a V-16?
