Massive Nissan Recall Covers More Than 700,000 Cars
TOKYO — Nissan is expanding a recall of Altima and Sentra sedans to correct a faulty crankshaft sensor that could cause the engine to shut down. The recall now covers nearly 714,000 cars sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nissan said the models affected are equipped with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines and were made in 2002 and 2005-'06.

The crankshaft sensor on some engines is susceptible to overheating, which in some cases can cause the engine to quit working.

It's all about competitive pressure and auto makers beating up on suppliers. Suppliers then deliver el-cheapo components thereby screving the reputation of the auto maker when the component fails prematurely.

I think to say that any make of car nowadays falls apart is a bit strong. All makes suffer glitches from time to time, mainly electrical these days with so many advanced features on modern cars.

Ignoring the particular brand of the recall. Are there any statistics or trends on overall reliability in the industry? In terms of number of recalls, severity, units affected and percent of all units sold.

It'd be interesting to see what the percentage of recalls for *all* brands combined was for each year.

LOLOLOLOLOL.

"Not likely, the Jetta is also a boring car."

We're talking about the TOYOTA CAMRY here. The Jetta has German engineering, and it may be bland to look at, but it's much better to drive than the Camry, for less money.

the jetta will ONLY be fun to drive while it still runs. it still has crappy german sourced electronics, motors, switches, etc.

Japanese maufacturers use German electronics too, Honda for example uses Bosch components in their cars.

"On a related note" the new Jetta looks like a Chinese rip off of the current Corolla...not that's lame.

and they are the worse for it!

my brother had to replace the Hitachi starter on his wife's hi mileage InfinitiI30. to save a few bucks, he used a Bosch starter out of a Maxima. it FAILED in less than 60 days.

It doesn't matter how many recalls or what JD power says, just look at mercedes they've been getting hammered with bad press and they still sell.

It's a mystery to me why Mercedes sales continue with such successs. BMW is another mystery as many former owners have told me that these cars are very expensive to repair and maintain. The consumer should protect himself by looking at life-cycle cost before making his purchasing decision -- and don't look to pathological liars in the showroom to help you with life-cycle costing.

As a former 17 year technician for a carmaker that lots of you seem to love and now a car salesman (yea I know). I can say this about Cam/Crank sensors;I have not seen a truly reliable Crank or Cam sensor from any manufacturer and it does not seem to matter what the country of origin is they are all somewhat unreliable and that goes for anything from a Ford diesel to a BMW.

Well at least when the recalls if any for the GT-R come rolling in we will know there will be no more than 1500 cars on the list.

You suck at life.

What you're forgetting is that these a RECALLS. The manufacturer PAYS to FIX THEM.

When you Benz's transmission falls out and the stereo, hvac and power seats glitch and stop working at 60,000 miles, you can take it to the dealer and pay 10 grand to get that land yacht back on the road.
