Unless Maybach can turn itself around, Daimler will retire the high-end make early next decade.

It's hoped Maybach will breakthrough with rising Asian demand for luxo-saloons. Poor sales and a determined product development effort from Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motors are widening the gap for the Daimler cause.

204E60, then why was he driven in parades in an open Mercedes instead of a Maybach? Anyway, the fact that a notorious or otherwise famous figure happens to be seen driving a particular brand or model is not a good reason for choosing it over another brand or model. BTW, Hitler is chiefly responsible for the birth of VW so maybe that is what he would be driving if he were alive today. He could then commit suicide by closing the windows and doors and driving the car into the waters above Niagara Falls and simply wait for the car to float over the falls.

I think the Maybach is doomed because customers in that price range want the car to be a work of art as well as as showcase of technology. Rolls and Bentley are better woks of art than Mayback and Maybach uses an obsolete 3-valve per cylinder SOHC engine instead of a proper 4-valve-per cylinder DOHC engine.

Maybach has a lot of potential. I've had the chance to sit in one in Las Vegas. The quality, prestige, and road presence is definitely uber-luxury. What they are lacking is a less expensive model to compete with the Bentley Continental range as well as a nice uber luxury coupe to compete with the Phantom Drophead. Capable company backed by Daimler but executive decisions need to be made. They should stop production for a couple years and restructure the brand itself. Maybach has history it will be sad to see it go. But MB can't have it be a burden for them two keep this running.

Nevertheless, great 57/62 models and the excelero was very exotic. With economy not many "wealthy" people will even consider buying a Maybach. Only the super wealthy are able to afford one.

A agree, the cars are fantastic. The biggest problem, as I see it, is the lack of a dramatic styling theme. The Excelero would help but the entire range has to be distanced from the Mercedes live by a more modern and polarizing design. The design....is benign.

Agreed, I had a chance to drive a 57, and as great as it was I could tell I was still sitting in an S-Class. They need to tweak their design a bit more on the interior. At least on the driver instrument cluster which I understand you'll normally not be seeing if you have a 62, but remember they were touting the 57 as more of a drivers car (if you can believe that!)

That's what 65 AMG models of mercedes are for. CL65 goes against Bentley GT and S65 competes Flying spur.

so as i said earlier, Maybach is too close to MB and that's why it's not doing well. Customers of this category mostly go below Maybach and pick MB or go above it and choose the most expensive, prestigious and glamorous RR or Bentley models. Don't forget a potential big seller in RR Ghost is coming soon. I think definitely Maybach is in trouble.

Maybach = Nothing Special. It might have a sumptuous interior that really does rival that of Rolls-Royce or Bentley, but when you look at one and sit in one, it reminds one too much of a Mercedes S-class. The current S-class borrows alot of styling cues from a Maybach, especially in the grille area and the rear C-pillar on. The interior also looks like a Benz, only with more leather and wood.

That's why Maybach won't survive. Shouldn't have separated the brands more in terms of styling from the beginning.

With Rolls and Bentley having German ownership you have the best of both worlds, British heritage and leather and German "reliability". Maybach is the 3's a crowd brand and will drain MB's corporate cash too much to stay around.

Maybach struck me as how the Asians, like Lexus, would approach the ultra-luxury market. I have nothing against Lexus or Maybach. They strike me as "really good" cars, but they do not incite passion within me. Then again, I can't afford either, so my perception doesn't matter to them.
