Mazda Immune To Economic Woes? Up 6.7% In February
Mazda North American Operations(MNAO) today reported another strong sales month with 23,548 units sold in the U.S., a 6.7 percent increase compared to last February. Year-to-date
sales of 44,760 are up 8.4 percent year-over-year.

Mazda's crossover SUV lineup is taking the industry by storm. The winner of the 2008 North American Truck of the Year and 2008 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year, CX-9, reported sales of 2,200 units, up 88.4
percent versus last year. CX-7 recorded 3,185 units sold, up 7.9 percent, and Tribute sold 1,386 units in February. Combined, the Mazda crossover SUV lineup recorded sales of 6,771 in February, up 49.7 percent versus last
February and up 59.5 percent year-to-date.

The MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle, which has been freshened for 2008, sold 2,021 units, a 29.1 percent increase, and the best month for the vehicle since March, 2006. January sales were led in volume by MAZDA3,
which reported sales of 7,893 units.

"The economic outlook remains in doubt, with increasing crude oil prices, continued consumer uncertainty and further concern in housing causing consumers to think twice before purchasing big-ticket items like a
new car," said Jim O'Sullivan, President and CEO, MNAO. "Mazda sales continue to buck the trend across the industry, though, with our focus on selling the right cars and SUVs at the right price, and through the right
dealers."

Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) continues its string of impressive sales with 1,667 vehicles sold, up 43 percent versus last year. On a year-to-date basis, MMdM reported 3,517 total sales. Mazda Canada, Inc. reported
February sales of 5,810 units, up 12.4 percent, and their best-ever February. Additionally, Mazda Canada reported best-ever February sales for MAZDA5, MX-5 and B-Series. Year-to-date, MCI reports 10,542 vehicles sold,
up 9.3 percent.

When you only sell 41K+ a month, it is hard to keep the numbers up with new models. I am not impressed at all.

I meant it is "not" hard to keep the numbers up.

I wish for an "EDIT button" on here! Thanks.

Where are you getting 41k from? Mazda moves about 20-22k a month normally, and hasnt had anything new since last January. To some of us, that's actually an accomplishment, esp. considering most of the competition's numbers are going downhill.

My bad...I was looking in the "Year-To-Date" column.
Which is even worse than the 41K+.

Tell that to the ones with similar sales volumes that are tanking as well (BMW, Kia, Hyundai, etc). Sales volumes can never increase as fast as they can decrease. it takes planning and production to grow a business.

I also think that the Mazda line up is pretty attractive and well priced all accross.

Seems like everywhere I turn there is a CX-7/CX-9. They hit a sweetspot with those. Good for them.

True, those are two hot crossovers. Which makes me wonder what's the point of the Tribute. It sticks out like a sore thumb in their lineup.

And that dumb, ugly re-badged Ford Ranger they still sell. Nobody needs a Mazda pickup truck.

Though I agree somewhat with S4, Ford and Mazda are the only companies that offer a compact pick-up in the US. If you off-road in the forest/mountains a compact sized true off-roader is ideal.

I guess if you are well heeled, in a recession you buy Mercedes, Mini or Mazda. How did Mercury do????

Immune to economic woes...you and enthusiast should go have a cup of coffee and analyze to your hearts' content.

For an entry level car mazda has stepped up their game, but for long term they need to sell alot more.Developing the next series of cars takes alot of money.

Anyone who owns a CX-9 will tell you that whoever bought an Acura MDX or Lexus RX350 paid $8000 too much.

CX-9 is really impressive also considering it's Mazda's first shot at the segment. It has the presence of a Q7 with its size/shape.

Given the fact that Mazda has a really high quality and reliability and is comparable to Honda/Toyota, it's a smart pick. You can get a car that is more performance oriented than the latter two, runs just as well, and is cheap to maintain at a better cost. Granted you may not have the resale, but with the way the economy is going, financing to own a car and keeping it for the long term is financially smarter than leasing. I have never leased a car, nor will I pay RENT for my auto.

agreed, I will take a Mazda over a Honda/Toyota very easily. Besides the Ford rebadged products of course. I'd rather buy a Mazda than a Volvo actually.

This just means they sucked LESS this time, by contrast a growth. I recently was stuck with a Mazda 6 rental and was reminded of how a bland, boring japanese car drives.
