If the new design boss of Mazda had his way, there will be a new RX-7 two-seater sports car next year.

In an interview done the day before the Tokyo Motor Show opens, Ikuo Maeda said he has already prepared sketches of an RX-7 replacement. He said that Mazda is keen towards building this model but that it will only get done if the market allows for it.

Maeda has his work cut out for him to convince senior Mazda management to greenlight the project. It’s likely that the new RX-7 would have a rotary engine powering it, like all of its predecessors. It is Maeda’s intention to rejuvenate the entire Mazda line-up. He wants to push the brand upmarket improving the cars’ interiors.
