Mercedes 35MPG Bluetec Diesel S-Class Coming 2007 Frankfurt AutoShow
Mercedes-Benz is reported to be developing a new version of its S-class limo equipped with an ultra-efficient Bluetec diesel engine. With a motor displacing just 2.2L, the new diesel driven S-class should return a fuel economy rating of just 6.6L per 100km, or roughly 35mpg.
We should get our first glimpse of the new car at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show, with production scheduled to start towards the end of next year. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that Mercedes will be combining the four-cylinder oil-burner with its new mild-hybrid system to achieve the amazingly low consumption figures.

35 MPG? So that actually means that if they bring it over to you guys, the S-class will be ONE MPG after the best non-hybrid car sold in the US presently, which happens to be the Toyota Yaris... I find that mildly ammusing!

But I know where the Yaris will beat the S, in the 0-60 Test and 1/4 mile, it'll be a nice competition.

35 MPG on this Bluetec diesel S-Class is pretty impressive for a car that size. But one huge problem it only has 204hp? I don't want to pay up to $100k for only 204hp.
I would rather get the Lexus LS instead, more horse power and better interior as well.

I don't know about better interior but it does lack a bit power I must admit. The interior is just "different'. Japanese interiors and European interiors simple as that. Styling is all subjective anyways. But reading the numbers for the bluetec e-class 0-60 was very impressive. I don't doubt this will be a huge difference even though the S-class is heavier. Mercedes bluetech is much better than previous generation diesels made by Mercedes and has come a long ways.
Sometimes it's not about the power but more towards functionality with a purpose. The purpose of the bluetech is to get great mileage but with enough power for the consumer needs. If the s-class buyer wanted power they would be going for an S63.
I personally would not buy this bluetec. If I wanted power I get a sports car. If I wanted a luxury car for its luxury then I would buy the S-class. Power in any of these full size barges really does not matter. It's great to have available power but you will never use it. I do believe 204 is short but it is more than enough to over take people on highways and streets. If the e-class bluetech numbers 0-60 are correct then the s-class would only be 1-2seconds slower still quite impressive.

I have a feeling this powertrain will be adequate, maybe two seconds slower than the S550 (i.e. 0-60 in 7.5 seconds).
"Lexus," I don't think you realize this, but LS600hL buyers and S-Class hybrid buyers will be very different. The LSh is Lexus's flagship, and is very expensive and exclusive for that reason. The S600 is its main competitor from Merc, not the S-Class hybrid.
On the other hand, the S hybrid buyer cares more about having great fuel economy without sacrificing luxury. Where the LSh buyer wants a fast sedan with hybrid "bragging rights," the S owner would rather get a vehicle that really does get impressive mileage. I'm not trying to put down the LS -it's a very impressive machine- but it's also a very different car. If the S-Class buyer wanted a car that was fast, they would've gone for the S550. I guess, in reality, the S550 is closest to the LS600hL in terms of power/mpg/price.
BTW, I don't think the S-Class Bluetec hybrid will be as much money as the S550. My prediction: $75K.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO 4-cylinder ENGINES FOR THE S-CLASS!!!!!!!
my family was planning on getting a Merc hybrid when it comes out (I know, we think really far ahead), but this is ridiculous. 204 hp for one of the best luxury sedans in existence??? This disgraces the image of Benz

I don't know, because it has about 300lb. ft. of torque, right? Torque is really what propels a car.
I've also heard rumors that there will be a more powerful hybrid S-Class, but whether it comes here remains to be seen.
I don't love this idea, either (at least the hybrid part of it), but as with Lexus, I can see why they're doing it.

35mpg, I can't shake the feeling that it's a little optimistic.
Granted the CRD is a bigger displacement engine and older, but it only got 18.5mpg combined real world, and it's probably about 1000lbs lighter than what the S will be.
The main problem with the S-class is that it's diesel will always run, assuming they stick with the "mild" hybrid. Diesels in cities are not efficient.

Performance probably won't be as bad as one may think (9sec range?), but I don't think mileage will be as good as they expect.
I guess MB agrees with Lexus, rich people do care about mileage.

Well, in all honesty, the LS600hL is not for a person who cares about mileage. Its ratings are not impressive! The S-Class Bluetec hybrid buyer is more committed to the idea of better mileage... either that or they just want to look good.

It is more realistic than the next generation Prius getting 100+ MPG! The S-class 320 CDI already get 28 US MPG... So 7 additional MPG's doesn't seem that far fetched!

Sailor,
Don't know since we don't get diesel sedans anymore. Is that combined or highway? Again, comparing it to the diesel Liberty.
Autoexpress reported 113 UK mpg. I mentioned before it real world tests, that should be about 80+mpg US. Name another car the same size that can do that. Name another car that isn't a sardine can that can match the current Prius' mileage.
We'll have to wait for the roadtests, but I think the electric motor will just help it to keep up with the S320 in accel. I cannot think of any car right now that is the size of the S that runs w/ a 4 banger. That would be a good measuring stick.
Foxy,
True, but the LS600hL manages to be SULEV while getting 50% better mileage than the V12s it competes against.

All european numbers are a standard "EU mix" which is the equivalent of combined mileage (EU mix is usually a little lower than EPA combined)...
Cars that match the Prius:
Ford Focus
Opel Astra
Citroen C3
Peugeot 307
VW Golf
Audi A3
BMW 118d
Renault Megane
Fiat Grande Punto
Seat Leon
Seat Toledo
and others...
Some of these cars might not stack up to the Prius entirely, but since all of them (with the economic diesel engines, not the expensive models like i.e. my Leon Cupra) are at least 20% cheaper than the Prius in most european countries, people will save the money, get the diesel and then use the premium for 100.000 additional miles of free diesel. And since a diesel will easily outlast a gasoline engine (let alone that flimsy atckinson cycle engine in the prius and those batteries) you will be able to drive in your diesel longer...
BTW: That SULEV thing is such BS! So the LS600h might be cleaner than it's competitors... But how can a car with such high consumption be called an "Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle"?! And since it isn't any faster than the LS460, how can it be competeing with faster V12s?!
Anyway, don't bother answering... I'm out of here... Gone fishin'

Sailor,
The only V12 the LSh can't beat is the MB twin turbo.
How do those cars do on emissions?
What good is driving in your diesel when you can't breath? Personally though, Europe can go back to dirty diesels and sell them for $0.99 each for all I care.
