Found the video on Evo magazine. Even though I am more of a BMW fan, the 450SEL 6.9 holds a special place in my heart. In the late 1970s, I remember this car as being the best luxury car on earth. It had everything, power, prestige and was the preferred ride to be seen in by celebrities. I've always wanted one too!
Great video seeing the 450SE 6.9 go against the new S65 AMG. A lot of other great videos on that page as well.

Of course not.

No, you know what I meant!
Best car, not best supercar.
And yet, the S65 has supercar-eating performance. It still can't touch the Veyron, though.

So it should've read.. " The S65 is the world's best car. Comma, not including the Veyron". Period.

No, it's because it has a 600hp V12, it's because it has an ultra-luxurious interior, it's because it has never-ending desirability, it's because it's priced in Bentley territory, it's because it has everything anyone would ever want in a car.

The S65 is an awesome car but it's not the world's best car. Will, i'm sorry you're not a Merc fan but people don't buy an S65 because of the badge or the brand. You get superb luxury for that money. Now having that said, it's not the world's best car.
However, to say that Veyron is a better car. Well sure it is because an S65 is not a sports car; A Veyron is no luxury saloon as well. Different segment so the two can not be compared.
Their both awesome cars though.

"There's an undeniable appeal of owning a top-of-the-line S-Class AMG, whether I like it or not. You mean to tell me that people who buy this car will buy it and take it to the track everyday?"
That's what I've been saying. This car has undeniable appeal, and you've been denying it.
But people don't buy it merely because of the badge. Everything the S65 does, it does well.
The Flying Spur, I agree, is somewhat of a competitor. But I'd think more people woud compare it to the S600. S65 is the flagship performance sedan for Mercedes, not luxury sedan. But you do get a lot of both.

I'm surprised the S65 posted a 0-60 of 5.9 seconds. I'm pretty positive that's s550 time. The S63 posts a 0-60 of 4.6 seconds. I'm pretty sure the S65 posts a 0-60 of 4.3 seconds.
I'm very pleased that AMG decided to scrap forced induction for the S63, which is my personal pick between the two AMG models.
For some reason, i'm not keen with the use of turbos/superchargers in super-luxury sedans. I'd expect impressive naturally aspirated performance from a well-built engine to be a hallmark of quality and craftsmanship in a mercedes AMG since they are assumed to be hand-built.
IMHO forced induction should be utilized only in small displacement engines (4 cyl/6 cyl) and race-bred vehicles used for sporting purposes. But not in the luxury segment in these uber-sized sedans. Its more of a deterant for me to see a turbo/supercharger in a $100,000+ sedan.

If you look at the drivers, they looked like they were driving around for fun and enjoyment - and not with the objective of getting the lowest 0-60 times. ;)

I think when there is an S600 and S63 AMG,the S65 AMG looks quite useless, unwanted and unneeded.
S65 AMG is just like mixing the two.S600's V12 Biturbo with S63 AMG's sportiness and bodykits.
In short S65 = S600+S63AMG

There's a difference between a car being "unwanted" and "superfluous". The S65 is superfluous, yes. And like you said, it mixes the S600's luxury with even more sport than the S63, so that leaves you with the best S-Class in the world. So, in short, I'm confused as to why you'd be calling it "useless".

You all will call me crazy but give me the 450SEL. I was just amazed at how well it handled around the corners and how nice the ride was for a huge saloon that it is.
I have always thought the past couple generation MB's were just simply the best.

My father owned a 450SEL 6.9 in 1979. It was one of the last ones imported into the US.
Fantastic car. It was in those days the best luxury car on the planet. Comfortable, fast and it felt like a bank vault.
There were only two problems: one, it guzzled gas like crazy, and two, you couldn't drive it in the rain - literally.
During the gas shocks of the early '80s, my father got rid of it and traded it in for a Mercedes 300SD Turbodiesel, the same body style, just a different motor.

They obviously took it easy off the line. The S65 is about 2 seconds quicker to 60 than in this video.

The Veyron better be a better car as it costs a cool million more than the S65. I do have a customer that owns both (I work at a Mercedes dealer), and he's buying ANOTHER Veyron he likes them so much. He says the car is easy to drive around town and blows his mind when he gives it the gas. I think driveability in a 1000hp car is a big deal.

Yes, who the hell needs to Veyrons?
And why doesn't he give one of them to me?
And-- how do you get more than one Veyron in stock in such a short period of time? I thought they were sold out.
I smell something wrong here.

Remember though, that when motoring journalists are setting 0-60 times, (especially in an Automatic) is that they have a level of mechanical sympathy for the car as it is not their own, and the manufacturer expects them to bring it back in one piece.
When Mercedes did their in-house 0-60 times, they could be as brutal with the car as they wanted, using all manner of techniques which you would never want to attempt on your own car.
And don't listen to JUGNU, once again he is full of crap. S65 "unwanted"? What about the large number of customers that want the AMG package with a HIGH torque, more relaxed engine? The S63 is a great car, but the high-revving nature of its V8 is not wanted by all, and for those who prefer low-down torque, effortless over-taking ability and the power of a big-displacement engine, the S65 is their car of choice in the S-Class range.
