Mercedes Benz Beats Everyone Solving The L-ion Puzzle For Automotive Use
Daimler AG has achieved a crucial breakthrough in battery technology. The Stuttgart-based automaker is the world's first manufacturer to have succeeded in adapting lithium-ion technology to the demanding requirements of automotive applications. Until now, the technology has been used primarily in consumer electronics. The new battery will be used in the series-production S 400 BlueHYBRID beginning next year. This important technology was possible thanks to 25 patents held by Daimler.

Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Daimler AG Board of Management and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, says: "What we have here is a groundbreaking key technology that is going to be a decisive factor for the future success of the automotive industry. That is a tribute to our intensive research efforts, which we have been conducting in this area since 1992."

The engineers' success is above all a result of the Daimler-developed integration of the lithium-ion battery into the vehicle's climate control system. This ensures that the battery always works at optimal system temperatures of between 15 and 35 degrees C, which in turn makes it possible for the battery to provide long service life and maximum performance.

The main advantages offered by the newly developed lithium-ion battery are its very compact dimensions and its far superior performance compared to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries. The weight/power ratio of the entire battery is 1,900 watts per liter (W/L). What's more, the battery stands out by virtue of its high ampere-hour efficiency, long service life, and great reliability, even at very low temperatures. Its high level of safety is the equal of that provided by today's auto batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are ideally suited for use in hybrid vehicles to help reducing fuel consumption and thus also CO2 emissions. At the same time, the Daimler engineers are investigating to what degree this technology can be applied to other vehicle concepts, such as electric and fuel cell-powered cars.

S 400 BlueHYBRID -- the world's most economical luxury sedan

The S 400 BlueHYBRID consumes only 7.9 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the NEDC. This results in very low CO2 emissions of only 190 grams per kilometer, a very low value for this vehicle class and power class, making the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury sedan -- unrivaled by any gasoline, diesel, or hybrid drive system offered by any competitor. And S 400 BlueHYBRID drivers will still enjoy impressive performance:
combined with the hybrid module, the maximum output is 220 kW/299 hp, and the corresponding maximum torque is 375 Nm. The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Even more potential is offered by the combination of clean BlueTec diesel technology with a hybrid module, a duo that is featured in the S 300 BlueTec HYBRID, for example.

I thought the FCX ran on hydrogen, which is why they only offer the test cars in California.

really? Because I'm reading an article on it right now that states it's a hydrogen powered car (holds 5.3kg, range 270 miles) and that the small LiIon pack just buffers the power delivery from the hydrogen fuel cell and stores energy from the regenerative braking system.

Yes, exactly, it's hydrogen - Fuel Cell eXperimental - that converts the hydrogen into electricity - extra power is stored in the batteries, as you stated...sorry for being unclear

from Honda's site:

'Honda has developed a compact lithium-ion battery that serves as a supplemental power source in the FCX Clarity.

The battery replaces the ultra-capacitor previously taking up space behind the rear seat. The battery is small enough to fit underneath the rear seat—yet another contributor to the elegant design of the FCX Clarity'

More speculation and unproven hyperbole coming out of Germany. I'll believe it when I see it.

Even when you see it, you won't believe it. If you have proof, you won't believe it. There will always be something wrong, or suspicious, or stolen, or copied, or Toyota/Lexus is coming out with better, and so on and so on and so on.......

Whatever.

1970Toyotamark,

Yeahhh! keep telling yourself that if it makes u feel better about Toyota/Lexus when you sleep at night. Pure Bias, and typical fanboy.

Mercedes (Karl Benz) invented the automobile and now Mercedes-Benz has perfected it once again, LOOK how quick the model is being launched! Next year. The rest of the automakers will have to follow.

None of your German fan biases changes the fact that this is a story with no facts to back it up. Fact is, Toy/Lex has put over a million hybirds on tyhe road, Mercedes...how many....0.

And all this time all of you have been railing against Toy/Lex hybrids, but now that some story comes out about how a Greman brand has perfected one, you run up to it, salivating like Pavlovian dogs.

I want ALL manufacturers to put out cars combining power, fuel efficiency and low emissions. ALL. I was about the most excited person on here when GM debuted its full sized hybrid SUVs, and I hate domestics.

If anyone can actually get a cleaner diesel mated to a hybrid, at a reasonable cost, that can get decent 0-60 and come in under SULEV emissions, preferably with Li-Ion or plug-in technology, I will buy it. I dont care if it comes from Europe, Japan, US or China (well maybe not China). Unlike most of the fanboys around here, I've owned cars from Japan, Germany, US and UK.

Right now there is nothing out there that beats the efficiency, emissions and power you get from hybrids. They are the best combination of those three variables. All these German concepts we keep hearing about every day are just not reality yet. The claims are becoming more obscenely far-fetched each day. But you fanboys with your blinders on just cant see through that. Thats fine, keep drooling over the unattainable. Maybe you need that in your lives. I'll enjoy what I have in the real world.

the reason some people on here dislike hybrids isn't because Germans don't have them. It's because thus far the only useful application for one has been in the Prius, and enthusiasts aren't driving those. In teh instances where ToyoLexus has tried marketing the hybrid as a performance advantage WITH a fuel economy benefit (GS450h and LS600h), they've failed miserably to live up to their marketing. And before you get into an uproar over that statememt, these are verifiable facts that are not subject to debate -- the GS450h is slower than a 535i AND gets 1 mpg worse fuel economy AND has half the trunk because of the batteries (Edmunds.com), and the LS600h, well, everywhere you look you can read about the uselessness of that car.

When a manufacturer, ANY manufacturer, figures out how to make a hybrid in a performance vehicle that actually provides a benefit in performance AND fuel economy, without forcing you to sacrifice elsewhere (i.e. without giving you the trunk out of a VW Rabbit) that will be the day you see universal praise from readers on this site for the first time ever.

And you know when I think that's going to happen? When someone brings out a diesel hybrid, since diesels already crush the ags hybrids in pretty much every way. Since German car brands happen to be much much farther ahead in diesel technology than the Japanese, you can pretty much guess who is going to come out with that first. I promise you I'd be first in line for a 535dh or whatever they'd call it.

Very clever, integrating the battery into the climate control. Temperature is very important to these batteries, no way around this fact. It's even the case with lead acid, though just for a starter motor it is seldom noticed.

It would also be a good idea to have a 20/80 option for drivers who typically didn't need the full range. What that would mean is you never discharge below 20%, and you never charge more than 80% capacity. A battery could go perhaps 10 years if treated that well.

Temperature range of 15 to 35C? It was -28C the other night where I am (90 min north of Toronto).

It's better than a diesel but once you get over the hype, it's nothing special beyond the new battery,
Assuming the S400 uses a V6 gasoline engine, 7.9L/100km combined isn't any better than the LS600hL's 11.2L/100km. 25% more cylinders, roughly 25% more fuel.
Difference is Lexus sells their hybrids, will MB or did they pull a BMW-hydrogen merely to lay claim they were first but have no actual intention of selling it?
(the S400 is a mild-hybrid right?)

Gotta love how the Germans are all queitly saying me too and hopping on the hybrid bandwagon.

GoObama,
Yup.

btw, with black superdelegates switching from Clinton to Obama, do you see any hints of reverse racism or a doublestandard there (imagine of white candidates jumped to Clinton)? Obama's just like BMW, all hype, little substance and they're both ugly.

Haha, I think I hear your mommy calling you to bed litle boy.

Yeah, and according to some moreon Germans on this site, Germany invented civilization as we know it in 1901.

About the climate control system, this means that either the A/C compressor or the heater/engine will always need to run, seems to be counterproductive to mileage if you have to drive in extreme heat or cold. Mostly heat though.
