so much for recession!

as expected, certain segments of the population appear to be unaffected by a downturn.

Apparently. What strikes me is the huge leap in C-Class sales, After all it is the entry level model. Anyway, they are definitely doing something right.

well, it also helps that the C-klasse was just refreshed...

You mean those S-Class buyers, whose sales were down 28%, or the C-Class (entry) buyers, whose sales were up 50%.

Great analysis as always, enthusiast.

Spellchecker, maybe you need a reading checker.

ES down 13%
RX down 5%

Neither of which is significant enough to prove or disprove enthusiast's weak conclusion about MBZ being recession proof. What would disprove his theory is not only what I already mentioned (C up, S down), but also that LS continues to outsell S every month.

But thanks for playing, your insight is always welcome, if for no other reason than a good laugh.

Im starting to see the new C everywhere. I think they have an unlikely hit on thier hands with the new C.

Also, there has been a masisve runout on the previous C class model, where some great delas were available. But no doubt that the new C class has exceeded all expectations - and it may have taken some sales from the E class. M class also has done amazingly well, just gos to show it's a perfectly judged product.

S class sales are a real worry though: some fallout is to be expected in this economic climate, but this type of fall has to cause a concern, especially since the BMW 7 series has gone UP.

Any idea why???

Wow! I don't really know what it is bringing their sales up (C-Class?), but I've got to hand it to them, they're doing a fantastic job this year, while most brands are struggling to have flat sales months.

this is impressive. bmw was down although many hot models coming, they will easily surpass last year. pos audi is down sigficantly. 10 percent adjusted and 6.9 percent on absolute basis.. they are truly in trouble with a poor product pipeline

Using increases and decreases in sales percentages to compare manufacturers is ridiculous. The calculation is based on the prior year's sales for each INDIVIDUAL manufacturer (i.e. having a terrible '07 means you can have a huge '08, at least in terms of percentages). The previous generation C-class was terrible. How hard is it to increase sales when that is where you are starting from? Maintaining current sales levels when you already have the best product in the segment is just as (if not more) impressive in my opinion.

The new C-Class helped a lot. The new entry level Merc is much much better than the outgoing generation. It looks more sporting now and I think the people who usually show interest in an A4 or a 3 series may actually be jumping ship but not for the power but rather the refinement of it's much improved interior.

I was at the dealership the other day waiting for my car to get serviced. The new C-Class is no slouch. I drove the C350 Sport it was quick indeed. Wasn't quite as fast as a 335i but for the people they are catering to it is more than enough. Now the C63...that's for the heavy-footed young generation who wants an alternative to an M3 or RS4.

I agree--I would not have considered the previous generation C-class at all, but I saw the new one recently, and I was very impressed with the changes and quality, inside and out. I've been considering a BMW, but I'll definitely consider MB now, based on what I saw.

They've done a nice job with the new C-class, and deserve the resultant success.

I'm not surprised by this. Mercedes is getting their isht toghether and making better cars than they did 5 years ago. And with the Chrysler thing out of the way, they now have the deck cleared to make some momentum.

One key metric not being mentioned here is profit, and profit per car. Mercedes makes less $ per car than BMW does, so even if they sell more units, the business may not be doing as well as you may think.
