Mercedes Benz Newest Diesels To Be Eligible For Tax Credits
Last week we told you the Volkswagen Jetta diesels were eligible for a federal tax credit because they get such good fuel-economy ratings. This morning it's Mercedes-Benz that has good green news to share, as its diesel lineup is also eligible for similar credits.

The VW and Benz vehicles, Automotive News reports, both fall under the new federal alternative-powertrain tax credit.

@ MT,

Wow, MT, this is a change for the better! I still can't believe how much you are against diesels when Toyota themselves sell them for markets outside the U.S. So what mags do you trust as a source? Care to name 2 or 3?

BTW, you do know that Mercedes will have a Bluetec Diesel-Hybrid on the market during the 2010 model year, don't you? If not, google it.

Wow Michael you have seemed to open your eyes and acknowledged other makes. Lexus is a good car and there is nothing wrong with it being your favorite make, but being a true automotive enthusiast means respecting other makes for what they are. There is no perfect car out there. I am a BMW fan myself, but I don't thnk they are the best and most inovative car. most every manufacturer has some sort of innovation of its own. Even If I don't particularly like a car I respect what it is. I am not particular to American made cars but I do respect them especially the turnaround GM has made. I never thought I would be giving props to GM, but they have made one hell of a turnaround.

You're kidding right? The R Class has to be one of the ugliest vehicles in the world. Its an ugly version of a mini van. Its as bad as a PT Cruiser.

Diesels are the answer for Americans. They are more durable than hybrids and cheaper to repair and maintain.

No one wants an electric car with hundreds of expensive components that can fail at any given time.

Less moving parts=less headaches.

sounds like bluetec is nothing complicated and don't require you to go to dealer for the regular maintenance.

and please check the maintenance manual and price before you conclude (diesel cars) are more durable (which i agree, but that's gonna be after 20 years) than hybrids and cheaper to repair and maintain.

all modern cars have thousand of electric components, hybrid or not. plus some of (if not all) the hybrid cars happen to be quite reliable. so saying hybrid cars are more likely to fail than a non hybrid VW passet may not be correct.

Yes mercuryguy, I totally agree. When I can find a 3series diesel certified pre-owned, I am going to purchase one.

You won't be saying that when Mercedes and BMW slap you with a $5k+ bill for an out of warranty replacement of a fuel injection pump.

this is very good news for diesels in the states. It also hopefully means BMW's new diesels will qualify for the tax credit as well, since according to BMW the X5 35d and 335d are more fuel efficient than MB's Bluetec's.

There are 2 reasons Diesels are used on Ships. Reliability and Efficiency. Yes, Diesels parts are expensive, but that is becuase they are built with heavy duty components.
