Mercedes-Benz first to bring diesel back to California
On the runway at this week’s Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek at Smashbox Studios, Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) unveiled a version of its E320 BLUETEC, a diesel sedan that will immediately be available in limited numbers to California customers through a special two- year/24,000-mile lease. California’s stringent emissions requirements have kept new diesel automobiles models off the California market for the better part of a decade. The new E320 BLUETEC - distinguished as “2007 World Green Car” by an international panel of journalists earlier this year - changes all that.

The car is fantastic for two reasons.

1) California's emissions is off the charts. Have you guys looked at their pollution?

2) Great new diesel technology.

Agree that this car is fantastic but where is the Vision C220 Bluetech for the more economy minded?

"Have you guys looked at their pollution?"

I know... you can actually LOOK right into their pollution if you go to L.A.

Am I the only one who remembers the VW Tourage V10 TDi that came out last year, and it was a 50 state car? Just a question. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If we could get the 4.0 liter MB diesel engine from Europe...that would be fantastic!!!

The S420cdi and GL420cdi do make more sense though.

so with the enrty of the e320 bluetec, we can sum up a descent comparison between the MB and the competitor the GS450h.

from the numbers provided...

MB E320 Bluetec
23/32 mpg
210hp motor
$55k base
no-word on emissions level yet
base $55k

Lexus GS450h
25/29 mpg
350hp motor
SULEV emissions
base $55k

its a really a preference matter for most, as most do stick with their brands....but on paper, the Lexus easily outperforms, delivers better greenhouse, and similiar fuel economy for roughly the same base pricing.

"On paper" is a vague term that should be used wisely. The GS450h only has 340hp, BTW-- and where the E320 Bluetec really shines is in torque. Why don't you bring up those figures?

Also, the E320 has recorded nearly 40MPG on the highway for many people. That is significantly better than the Lexus. It's $52,675 base.

car and driver observed economy for the two cars: 34mpg average on the E320 bluetec despite their self-proclaimed 'lead feet.' 20mpg on the GS450h. one of these is wildly out of line with manufacturer claims.

also, you neglected to mention that 400lbft of torque the E320 deliver from 1600rpm. kinda important.

I have had a Bluetec for almost a year and this car is really amazing. If you keep a steady 65-70 m.p.h. it will deliver 34-35 m.p.g. Around town I get a pretty steady 25-27 m.p.g. and the car is smooth, quiet and has all the power I need.
