Mercedes-Benz to introduce a four-cylinder diesel on the S300 CDI in 2010

As you may know already, back in we reported that Mercedes-Benz is planning to add a four-cylinder diesel engine to it S-Class flagship sedan.

Apparently, the new model will be called S300 CDI and will carry the same engine found on the E250 CDI, capable to deliver 201bhp and 384lb ft of torque.

According to Mercedes’ R&D boss Thomas Weber, it appears that the big problem with installing this new engine on the S-Class was to make it silent, but the German engineers did it again and we shall see this new model in 2010 ready to hit the streets.

Too small engine for toooooooo heavy car....failure. And I hope they don't use 3 cylinders engines.

It makes almost 400lbs ft of torque. It is plenty of around town power.

Nice to see people commenting on the performance of a car that isn't even out yet. What does the "4-cylinder" aspect have to do with it? It's got horsepower and lots of torque and most likely intelligent gearing.

Sounds like a winner to me.

Go look up how fast the previous generation 2007 E-class bluetec went from 0-60 and tell me the 200 odd horsepower isn't sufficient.

Wait I will tell you 6.6 seconds. That isn't exactly slow.

Here's a comparison.

e-class around 4082 lb
s-class around 4465 lb

So the s-class would get to 60mph in anywhere around 7 and 7.5 seconds. That is quicker to 60 than the 2007 BMW X5 3.0si (so clearly it's sufficient enough to cruise the city and with nearly 400lb of torque it can pull if needed).

You've got that mentality where small motors don't match luxury marquee's I know where you're coming from but 4cyl's don't derail a car from it's segment. It's still just as luxurious and still just as great. I got a much quicker s550 but I never found the need to really punch it. I'm not driving a little honda that needs to be gassed more to make a red light. With torque these large barges can hold its own. It's just not super fast. Luxury and speed don't really have to go hand in hand. That's what the AMG models are for :)

sounds great. it'd be awesome to run this thing on B20 biodiesel in winter and B100 in summer. But i'm wondering, how come there is no car with a multi-fuel engine? biodiesel, ethanol, you name it. I'd love to have a car that runs on pure ethanol, not the E85 15% gasoline crap, but pure 100% ethanol. Someone make on dammit.

I had a 2005 4 cyc turbo benz. it got insane mpg and had plenty of power. It was gas powered so I can only imagine how wel the diesel will do
