Mercedes already working on CL facelift
The current C216 Mercedes-Benz CL was first introduced at the end of 2006 and didn’t appear in most markets until early the next year, however, engineers are already hard at work testing prototypes for an updated version of the car.

Given the lack of modifications to the exterior of this prototype, it’s still too early to confirm if Mercedes is planning a full facelift or only a serious of slight styling changes.

Georgous car, and probably my favourite MB in terms of styling.

I have one question. Is the 2009 SL a facelift or a new model?

2009 SL is the last facelift before the new one arrives 2012.

Yes, it got a facelift recently. If you look back at the history of the SL you will notice that it has the longest production cycle of any other Mercedes-Benz Models.

The R129 (boxy 90s SL) was produced from 1989-2001 (11 Years)

The R107 (80s SL) was produced from 1973-1989 (18 years)

The W113 (Pagoda SL) eas produced from 1963-1971 (8 years)

Its not confusing at all, as you can see, SL production has historically outlasted the other MB passanger vehicles built alongside.

I have fell in love with this car since the early 90's and I tell you what mercedes has never failed me on the design of this car. It has to THE sexiest big coupe since it inception. this is just sexy beyond words. I wish there were some competitors out there for this market because mercedes has been holding this market since for over 15 years now. BMW had something with the 8 Series but production stopped because it was a heavy car and the price tag was heavy. thats why I think BMW should revamp the 8 Series again to compete with the CL that would be something to look for in the future. not that four door coupe bulls**t they are trying to make thats crap. BMW PLEEEEEEEASE BRING THE 8 SERIES BACK AS A 2 DOOR COUPE.

I have to disagree. I thought it was awkward looking too but i grew into it. You can't ignore the CL63's curb appeal and it's attention to detail with its interior. Mercedes stepped it up a notch with the new S and CL models.

Why this car does not have rear LED taillamps is beyond incomprehensible. THE CL class is the most expensive class of Mercedes yet it is missing a key safety feature that I think is a most have up luxury cars, especially in this price range.

I honestly dont understand how LED brake lights are a safety feature. Every time I look at a caddy with a few burnt-out LED lights, I think to myself "huh, so that's why they dont do it on other cars"

I think MB is adding daytime ones at least to the S and CL classes

Nice cut and paste Homer but it still doesnt answer my question. How exactly are LED's a safety feature? Quick answer, they're not.

Wow, the car is in the market not even 2 years and they didn't figure out it was ugly until now?

Here's a repeated advice, fix the interior design as well, it’s ugly as hell.

well, LEDs light up quicker allowing the person behind to stop quicker. In a NHTSA study, the average person stopped 20-30 feet sooner in a panic braking situation with the car in front having LEDs than with a car that had regular bulbs. Thats the safety feature there.

I would like to see that study. I find it hard to believe that mere milliseconds of illumination time can produce 20-30 foot improvements in braking performance.

Seems blinking (no matter LED or not) sure does help though:

MONTVALE, NJ – When the new-generation Mercedes-Benz S600 and S65 AMG models go on sale later this month, the flagship sedans will be equipped with an industry first – adaptive brake lights that flash rapidly during emergency braking. In testing, following drivers’ reaction time was improved by 0.2 seconds, which resulted in shorter stopping distances. From 50 mph, stopping distances were more than 13 feet shorter. Another example of the Mercedes-Benz comprehensive approach to minimizing accidents, the new safety system is expected to reduce rear collisions.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA! awarded Mercedes-Benz a preliminary exemption from current brake-light regulations, providing for 2,500 cars annually over the next two years to be equipped with the adaptive brake lights. As a result, adaptive brake lights will be standard equipment on the limited-production V12-powered S-Class sedans – the 2007-model S600 and S65 AMG – as well as on the next-generation CL coupe that arrives this fall.

The rapidly flashing LED brake lights are triggered at speeds above 30 mph when the driver applies the brake pedal so quickly that the brake assist system recognizes an emergency braking situation.

The new adaptive brake light system also turns on the hazard flashers automatically if the flashing brake lights were activated at a speed above 45 mph as soon as the vehicle stops, and the flashers shut off automatically when the vehicle accelerates to six miles per hour.
