Mercedes launches the new E 300 Bluetec in Europe
The E 300 BLUETEC accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds* and is capable of a top speed of 244 km/h*. At the same time, the BLUETEC model – like all its E-Class stable-mates – combines the suspension comfort typical of Mercedes with the proverbial “feel-good” ambience in the interior and outstanding safety standards. Give me a GS450h anyday. Faster and better looking and a better interior and more comfortable seats and better handling and it doesn't pollute.

Doesn't pollute? do you know what bluetec is all about? don't get diesel trucks and Mercedes Bluetec confused.

Now compare that to the GS450h. Enough said.

Unfortunately, despite the better fuel economy of diesels, the biased majority of the American population will never throw down more than $20k for a diesel "car".....the sad truth is that it will be a "cold day in hell" before BMW and Mercedes are able to make a substantial profit off of diesel cars in the U.S.

I just got back from a BMW event in Chicago and I got to drive a 535d (twin turbo diesel) and 535i back to back. I tell you what, that 535d is amazing. 282hp and 428lb-ft, it was awesome. It felt quicker to me than the 535i did, especially coming out of corners. I'd buy that car in a heartbeat. And enjoy better fuel economy than a hybrid for only $1k more than the gas version versus the $10k upcharge for the Lexus hybrid. And I get to have a real trunk that doesn't lose half it's volume to batteries.

Incidentally BMW is bringing that engine over in 2008, legal in all 50 states, in the 335d and in the X5.

"Diesel focuses mainly on fuel economy, hybrid can focus on fuel economy and performance, and emmissions."

Hilarious.

This is straight from a Lexus brochure here in Germany.
-LS460 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds (slower than S500, equally fast as S450, slower than 750i but a bit faster than A8 4.2 FSI)
-LS600hybrid 0-100 km/h in 6.3 (they claim it has V12 performance .. but its slower than ALL of the competitors. And it doesn't make a nice V12/W12 growl)

Lexus hybrid: fuel economy? not really. driving pleasure? considering it has more weight and a rubbish gearbox NO. perfomance? nope

I've seen more E550's here than Bluetecs. Funny that Europe finally got Bluetec after North America. Aren't you guys supposed to be the leaders, or is it only when the gov't mandates you to improve?

Except for the engine, the E is still the best new German sedan imo. It's kind of small (atleast looks that way) compared to an A6 though.

Europe doesn't need Bluetec (yet). Instead we have the E220 CDI, E280 CDI, E320 CDI and E420 CDI.

2008 EPA comparison between the E320 Bluetec and the LS600hL.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2005findacarf.jsp

How is it that a 3.0L Bluetec "modern" diesel emits nearly as much emissions and uses as much oil as a V8 hybrid in a car about 40% larger (and probably outweighs it by 1000lbs)?
The Bluetec does win by about 5mpg but it makes no difference if both cars are polluting the same and require the same amount of oil to be imported (back to the diesel take s30% more oil to make fact). The only difference is the cost to drive 25miles, $3.69 vs $2.78 (matters most to penny pinching Europe). I guess Mercedes buyers can't afford to drive a hybrid and do the planet a favour?
Incase you're wondering, the 2007 GS350 has the same emissions as the Bluetec.
In all cases, Lexus cars leave a comparable footprint but destroy the diesels in performance.

They should really consider an ES240/300h, the Camry-hybrid simply embarasses the Bluetec (unless you need to tow around an airplane like all the Europeans apparently do) in mileage (26mpg vs 34mpg) yet has the same performance.

sevor,
You don't need Bluetec only because Europe is still allowed to sell the dirtier CDIs (because car makers cry it'll cut into profits). But who cares, it's your health, not ours.

Sport,
Did you read what I said? "Almost as much. " Considering the GS350 is a gas engine with a larger displacement, .3tons isn't much compared to what Bluetec is supposed to be. Think about that and the LS' V8.

Depends who you ask. .9 seconds is significant enough but is by no means head and shoulders above.

Camry hybrid 7.7sec, 33mpg vs 2008 EPA combined of 34mpg.
http://www.caranddriver.com/shortroadtests/11035/short-take-review-2007-toyota-camry-hybrid.html

E320 Bluetec 6.8sec, 34mpg with "some" city driving, so basically they kept it on the highway to pad the numbers. 2008 EPA combined is only 26mpg.
http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtests/12686/2007-mercedes-benz-e320-bluetec-verdict-page2.html

In the above comparo, even Car and Driver prefers the MB E350 over the diesel.
