Mercedes' new BlueEFFICIENCY range
Mercedes-Benz will be adding three ultra-efficient versions of its C-Class sedan to its lineup this spring, featuring a host of new technologies aimed at improving fuel consumption and reducing emissions. The new range is dubbed ‘BlueEFFICIENCY’ and the models include the volume C180 KOMPRESSOR, C200 CDI and C350 CGI, and all are set to debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

The BlueEFFICIENCY version of the 136hp (100kW) C200 CDI consumes just 5.1L of diesel per 100km, while the C180 BlueEFFICIENCY with 156hp (115 kW) needs just 6.5L of petrol per 100km. This represents a 12% reduction in fuel consumption over the standard models and corresponds to 135 and 156 grams of carbon dioxide, respectively, per kilometre. The third BlueEFFICIENCY C-Class model is the C 350 CGI with direct petrol injection, which burns around 10% less fuel than the standard C350.

10% reduction from what? I want absolute numbers not vague percentages from the marketing guys.

When are we getting the Kompressor and 4-banger diesels in North America?

Other than the TSX, what other Japanese luxury car is 4 cyl? The TSX can get away with it since the 4 is smoother than even some sixes. Come to think of it, the A4 also comes with a 4, and also some Volvos and Saabs I believe.

I think Acura and Audi are the only premium marques with a 4-cylinder on the market today.

Volvo currently has zero 4-cylinder engines in the US market.

Spellchecker001, I agree that the Kompressor is awesome. I was standing at a corner on the streets of Ottawa one day when a Kompressor turned the corner -- that 4-banger engine was very quiet. I want the small diesel for long range between fill-ups. Fuel savings are a bonus. I think that the reason people did not buy these vehicles in the past is because the price of fuel was not really an issue then but the economy has changed along with pump price.

Saab has a four-cylinder engine on their MIDSIZE sedan (9-5), which is unacceptable. Volvo uses inline fives (S40 T5, anyone?).

The A4's engine seems to be the exception. It's significantly better than Audi's V6 in just about every way, short of sounding better. It's worthy of any luxury brand.

perhaps instead of making a new "range," they should instead apply this to all cars and make a huge advertising campaign
I would really like MB to incorporate their CGI technology on America-bound cars...
btw that's the best pic of the luxury C-class I've seen to date

I use 6.0litres/100km in my 4 year old, 245hp tuned, 330d. So this, 4 years on is not such a huge improvement considering I need to give away almost 45% of my horse power. A B-MB.
