well at the moment, MB vehicles have approximately a $1000 premium over gasoline i.e. ML320 CDI (3 liter engine) is $1000 more than ML350 (3.5 liter), same for the R class and E class. What's nice about the GL diesel option is that it is actually the cheapest diesel GL you can buy, while having 30-40% better mileage. I'm not sure if they'll raise the premium too much if they have Bluetec instead of CDI, but I think probably not in order to attract people to Bluetec (even though they don't need to attract people on it). My family test-drove a GL320 with its approx. 400 lbs of torque and when we drove it, it was actually enough. In Clarkson's words, "I expected it to be a wallowy-sort-of thing!"

Californian emission laws are biased towards gasoline-powered vehicles, as our politicans. Bluetec is a step in the right direction, however, in getting the masses to appreciate the advantages of diesels - and the driving fun.

Welcome to the future.

Once Americans start to understand how newer diesels operate - they will eventually "surrender"

YES! I think this may help to destroy the diesel "boogyman"...if that happens it will lead to many great things. I mean seriously, diesels are better than hybrids in MPG, they at times have BETTER performance than gas (hello torque!), they can last 3X longer than hybrids, and there is no huge polluting nickel refineries or toxic battery waste dumps.

Pretty decent take rate, especially for the SUVs. And this is without the most important markets having the diesels for sale.

What's the point? Lexus has hybrids which are better.

Hybrids are cleaner and get better fuel economy at all times. You wish German cars had the quality of a Lexus or Toyota.

the germans should stick to diesels and the japanese should stick to hybrids

"Toyota/Lexus hybrids are known to fall apart in 6 months." proof?

formula1, there will be rock solid german and japanese cars, and there will be weak japanese and german cars. shit happens to any car if you don't take good care of it. our old passat had a suspension problem.

" Japanese car with the same mileage rides like parts of the suspension and body are missing." really? we bought a used honda crv and the suspension and body are there. it rides well. so did many other used cars I tried including some bmws and benzes. but theyre some tht are problematic. I throttled a used c-class and the pedal felt wrong, tried driving a used a4 and the tranny was clunky.

That's impressive sales figures.
Does anybody have the figures for the GS and RX, seeing the hybrid take up rate there?
