Mercedes to snatch the profit margin crown from Toyota?
Well that’s sure what they’re gunning for at least according to a Swiss publication. Mercedes aims to hit this target by 2010, but Zetsche adds, “We want to attain this target in a sustainable way, not just hit it.”

The bullish Euro and spending on more eco-friendly technology make this especially challenging. To beat Toyota, Mercedes will need higher than a ten-percent margin.

Sounds doable to us. As a luxury maker, Mercedes can increase prices....

“We want to attain this target in a sustainable way, not just hit it.”

Translation: Unlike Toyota, our quality will not suffer while trying to hit these sales figures, and if it means a decline in quality then we simply rather not hit those numbers.

That little sentence says so much.

What quality? Merc are appalling!

yeah the '93 Merc that you're accustomed to probably sucks, but the Merc of today is definitely not appalling.

I thought their quality was already bad

Translation: Unlike Toyota, our stupid customers don't CARE about realiability as they are STILL BUYING. we don't NEED no stinkin' quality!

these fools will continue to buy our overpriced crap and someday we will make as much money in a year as toyota did last month.

Yeah, right. No significant problems with the newer models. They went through a bad patch, probably due to costs being cut, this would happen to any company.

However, MB are going back to their rock solid past. Just you wait and see.

really? have seen lots of them rolling around town.

in fact, i don't remember the last time i saw ANY car broken down on the side of the road.

I actually saw 2 new C class broken down on I-10 freeway this year so far. in addition to a S class (maybe 2005 or 6) broken in the middle of 3rd lane at 7:30 AM on I-10.

which is why i don't buy merc.

WillisWillis - 3/20/2008 11:36:47 PM

The new C class is too new to be rated for reliability, but Mercedes has improved their reliability rankings big time.

Seeing a Mercedes on the side of the road doesn't mean anything. About two weeks ago I saw a Lexus LS parked on the side of the road with the owner on the telephone. Should I assume the car broke down and he was calling for help? Or should I assume that his Lexus broke down, which can happen to any car?

These assumptions by people who are probably haters are just silly - or designed to start flame wars.

I have a W203 C230 V6 and I've had no problems with my car, despite CR telling me my car is a POS.

What perplex me about european cars are this. I see a brand spanking new Mercs, BMW or Land Rovers stuck on the traffic with hoods lefted up. I mean i understand if its couple years old but i see it on I-10 and 59 in Houston, Tx. This folks is no bullshit. And, no matter how hard you boneheads try to convince me otherwise...I see just as much Lexus, infiniti and Acuras out there and I havent seen a single broke down on the road in years. And you know this is a FACT.

Boost me.

w209,
No, this sentence says it all.
"Will be interesting to say the least. Seems Toyota is the target from everyone from GM to Benz."

Only 45 units affected, but they probably don't sell very many down under.
Gas pedal improperly installed.
http://www.caradvice.com.au/5260/mercedes-benz-m-r-class-accelerator-pedal-securing-nut-recall/

This one is a bit more serious. 9000 diesels recalled out of 12500 (a 75% rate).
http://benzinsider.com/2008/01/total-recall/

Kind of makes me wonder what happens if the urea/filters used to hide pollution fail?
MB fined for clean air act violation
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/12/epa_mercedes.html

The Yen is going up, the Euro is going up, everyone's suffering from higher costs. MB options are cut costs or sell a lot more cars if they think they can triple their net profit to match Toyota.

Thank you for telling us how much Mercedes "sucks". Now please go to Google and dig up the various Toyota recalls and current quality issues.

I'm amazed you have not been banned yet when all you do is contribute nothing except information which you often edit to make some brands look bad but your beloved Toyota/Lexus look good.

dude, you okay? Is there something wrong with you?
Stop lying to youself. You try so hard to convince you hate Toyota but I have feeling that deep inside you ... must actually love Lexus. when i see ppl trying so hard to degrade a auto powerhouse like toyota it reminds me of this:

A skinny little slimeball challenging a dual with Mike Tyson, Mike being a Toyota.

In reality, Toyota can wipeout morethan half of world's car builders in a matter of few years. back in late 80's, Toyota's total accumulated profits were so high that if toyota decided to under price there cars it would result in other car companies going belly up! Basically, toyota had such a deep pocket that they could lose money by thousands per cars for 8 years and still make a comeback. Now, this scared shit out of many American car companies. That's when Lee Iaccoca and everyone started to whine and asking for help via government. The point im trying to make is that Toyota will eventually dominate auto market and its matter of time. If they opted otherwise..it would have already happened in mid 90's. Be thankful they decided to dominate more slowly than quickly.

Mercedes doesn't even compare to Toyota. Look at the Celica, MR2, Supra and AE86 and tell me what MB has to offer against these legendary performance machines. Some loser C32 AMG which needs a blower to even get past 300 horsepower? There are Toyota Supra's out there with over 1,000 horsepower from a naturally aspirated engine. MB needs a turbo or supercharger on their V12 engines to even make over 500 horsepower. Plus Toyota has more racing heritage than MB.

They aim all they want at toppling Toyota but it will never happen.

The "profit margin crown" cannot be snatched from Toyota.

Porsche owns it. 8 yrs in a row.

mebbe profit per unit. easy with such OVERPRICED cars.

compare TOTAL profits, and porsche is just a few DROPS compared to huge lake/small SEA toyota's profits represent.

spellchcker,
1997 Supra TT 0-60 in 5.1 seconds.
2008 BMW 335Ci 0-60 in 4.9 sec

Welcome to 1997 BMW.

I'd love to see a link where MB always shortchanges themselves on mileage. Love to see it.

Gobama, walker,
Overall profit, Toyota wins. Profit per car, Porsche wins (they'd better if their cheapest car is $60,000 :)

Willis,
I actually like MB more than BMW. Sorry if hearing the hard facts is hard for you.
Toyota and BM have had large recalls in the last few years.

High Profit Margin cars aren't a good thing. It's good for the Manufacturer, but very bad for the customer.

which is exactly WHY so many former german car owners have defected and switched to Lexus. this is even ASIDE from the repairs and overall cost of ownership issues.

see how many used Lexi you'll find at german car dealerships. then repeat the exercise at lexus dealers.
