Mexico Bans Importation Of All Used Cars Except Those Exactly 10 Years Old
Some are dented, scratched and rusty. Others rattle and belch under faded paint jobs. But the "'98" soaped onto their windshields and a surprise change in Mexican import rules have turned a single year's worth of used cars into pick of the used-car lot.

Beginning Monday, only cars built in 1998 -- none older and none newer -- can be legally imported into Mexico. Car dealers were given notice only a month ago.

Until now, used cars 10 to 15 years old were scooped up at auction by South Texas used car dealers and rapidly sold to Mexicans hungry for affordable transportation and "la novedad" -- or novelty -- of unfamiliar makes and models.

What about all the cars stolen in the U.S. that end up in Mexico?

Texans better start watching out for their 1998's. Although a bunch of cars despite the year will still be stolen in America and sent to Mexico, breaking the law is nothing new to many of them.

CNN reported that the Mexican government caved in to pressure from car dealers who did not want competition from cheap used car imports. NAFTA probably only covers new vehicles so we can't even kick them out of NAFTA for this.

The people of Mexico are not really benifiting from NAFTA. We have taken over all of their farming in the states. A lot of those ppl lost thier jobs and have to get invloved in drug production/delivery. NAFTA started a bad cycle, but it was very necessary, we need the recourses of Mexico (cheap labor) and Canada (cheap raw materials) and they need us for cheap crops and meat. Its true a lot of Americans lost thier jobs, but most of them were overcompensated anyway.

no1listensanyway - How do you figure? ALL of the US bound cars made in Mexico are considered domestics. So that is a direct benefit to the economy of Mexico...

Read up on NAFTA first...

no1listensanyway, Canada is not just a source of raw materials. Canada and the U.S. are each other's largest trading partners. Our respective businessses and business practices are inextricably intertwined.

I find it bizarre that NAFTA became an issue in the Ohio primaries considering that Canada represents half of Ohio's exports and that Ohio typically enjoys a trade surplus with Canada. Bottom line: Canada benefits the Ohio economy.

This law will be broken quite often and easily through bribery of the officers in mexico. We know how it goes on there.

No, we don't need NAFTA. We need to deregulate, detax, and deunionize the US automotive industry.
