Misaligned Priorities? Americans Rank Number Of Cup Holders Ahead of Fuel Economy
Fuel economy is clearly moving up the list of concerns that consumers consider when shopping for cars. General Motors says buyers now rate fuel economy as third among reasons to buy a GM  vehicle (behind styling and value).

Four years ago it wasn't even in the top ten. But it seems you still can't beat lots of cup holders to move the metal.

CNW  Marketing Research says interior conveniences like heated seats and cup holders are higher in priority (73%) for shoppers than fuel efficiency (67%).  Mike J. Jackson,  chief executive of AutoNation , the country's largest public dealer network, with 322 stores in 16 states, sees this all the time. And he says consumers may talk fuel efficiency, but they don't necessarily buy it. He spoke to  FORBES .

Misaligned priorities? Damn right: arrogant, biased automotive journalists have misaligned priorities! These idiots actually think Al Gore and his "Global Warming" nonsense are more important to Americans than performance and value.

Newsflash: "Global Warming" is natural -- Al Gore has been debunked.

- Atmospheric C02 concentration tends to rise AFTER a rise in temperature -- it doesn't precede it, as Al Gore stipulated (Vostok ice core samples, J.R. Petit, J. Jouzel, 1999)

- 1998 was NOT the hottest year on record (Al Gore's hired scientist "Hansen" publicly apologized for an error in his arithmetic last year!)

- Hurricanes have NOT become more powerful (NOAA study, Feb 22, 2008)

Gotta run. Bye. Parting thoughts:

^^This quote, among others, pretty much summarizes why you are an idiot.

"Few credible scientists now doubt that humans have influenced the documented rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution. The first government-led U.S. Climate Change Science Program synthesis and assessment report supports the growing
body of evidence that warming of the atmosphere,
especially over the past 50 years, is directly impacted by human activity" (International Climate
Change Science Program)

duqit, why were we attacked on Dec. 7, 1941 and our Navy and Army Air Corp. was destroyed?

Because the Liberal President FDR and the Liberal Congress hated to spend money on the military. The Japanese parked right next to Pearl Harbor and bombed it. They destroyed our rusting antiquated military thanks to the Democrats. Right after that all the new planes, ships and weapon systems came out because the manufactures had already designed them, but were waiting for the Government to buy them.

Jimmy Carter was the President during the Iranian Hostage Crisis and bumbled it badly.

And the Branch Davidian fiasco was orchestrated by Bill Clinton, Janet Reno and General Wesley Clark. Those people in charge pushed that crazy person over and over and then they fired in 400 cannisters of tear gas and didn't give one thought about the innocent children, and in the end they all died.

Here's a list of what was used on the plywood compound owned by the Branch Davidians and it's occupants.

"Military Personnel and Equipment

- Personnel

Active Duty Personnel - 15
Texas National Guard Personnel - 13

- Track vehicles

Bradley fighting vehicle (OMZ) - 9
Combat Engineer Vehicle (M728) - 5
Tank Retrieval vehicle (M88) - 1
Abrams Tanks (M1A1) - 2

* The final solution

The final assault on the Mt. Carmel complex
occurred in three stages:

1) armored military vehicles punched holes
in both ends of the main building of the
complex,
2) "crowd control" gas was sprayed in, and
3) a fire started which destroyed the complex

Witnesses expected that the gas would drive the
inhabitants out. Instead, no one came out and
the complex was engulfed in fire.

Why didn't the residents come out? The
cover story as related by the FBI and
the Department of Justice is that the
Branch Davidians killed their own children
and then themselves and simultaneneously
set the complex on fire rather than surrender.
There is no forensic evidence to support
this claim.

The Japaneese navy steamed for two solid weeks to just the point of no return to launch the attack. They didn't just park off pearl harbor.

Didn't mean to start a political discussion and it was not a party comment. It is a simple statement about an individual man who should have never been elected. I don't care whether he is a republican or a democrat but I think the minimum requirement to be the president of the United States is a basic grasp of the English language. It that too much to ask? However, apparently the American public didn't agree. Hence my original comment.

Never underestimate the power of a well placed cupholder. And in all honesty most people aren't choosing their car based off its fuel economy. They're choosing their car based off its looks, performance, and utility(those cupholders), but not necessarily in that order. I think whatever MPG someones car gets is something they're just prepared to live with, whatever it is, because their car does exactly what he/she wants it to do.

If the need for fuel-efficient (read diesel cars) cars had dawned on the American automotive segment a decade back, we wont have these GREEN ACTIVISTS (idiots) making all this fuss about saving the environment. Right from the 80's Europe and Asia embraced fuel-efficient cars; to be precise Europe went the diesel route while Asia went for gasoline engines which were extremely fuel-efficient. Most engines didn't cross the 2 litre or the 2.5 litre mark. Whereas in the US, the first car for a teen will be a truck (8 litre monsters to say the least) that threw fuel-efficiency to the winds. Don't even get me started with the emissions! So there we go, Americans have had misaligned priorities from the oil-crisis years. Thankfully, the need for fuel-efficient cars has finally dawned upon the Stateside top 3 makers.

Never underestimate the importance of keeping hydrated.

First of all, America has always had more stringent emissions laws than anywhere else...the rest of the world is only now embracing this. Europe's diesels, until recently, were terrible polluters. They bought diesels and small engined gas cars because gas is/was so expensive there. Fuel in America is still relatively cheap, and until it's significantly and constistently higher, Americans will never embrace fuel efficient vehicles to the extent of the rest of the world.

I know it is easy to use this screaming headline to bash American consumers, or to deny the desires for fuel efficient vehicles. But when you look a little closer, the findings are not quite so inflammatory.
"interior conveniences like HEATED SEATS AND cup holders are higher in priority (my emphasis added)." Interior conveniences presumably would also include amenities like cruis, premium audio, tilt/telescoping, lumbar, on and on and on. I would imagine those items to be quite important to consumers as most of our time is spent inside the vehicle staring at and using those conveniences, but NOT JUST the cupholders. That fuel efficiency is ranked so closely to those features is a highlight, not a slam.

But no, CNW, who seems to have it out for fuel efficient vehicles, (Who funds these guys, big oil, or Big 2?), hihlights the dumbest part of it (cup holders) as a way to show the gullible public just how low people's concern for fuel efficiency is. And then they find one knucklenhead at a dealership to confirm their suspect claims. And they throw out a fact that contradicts them (the shift to CUVs) as being unrelated to a desire for fuel economy.

Not to mention the significance of GM's own internal findings, which contradicts those of CNW. "General Motors says buyers now rate fuel economy as third among reasons to buy a GM vehicle."

Any writer can take an idea and find whatever evidence they want to prove that idea, no matter how far-fetched the idea is. Good journalism rises above that by doing unbiased research, and then reporting the facts with solid analysis, coming to defensible conclusions, without resorting to hyperbole. Shame on Forbes for such shoddy auto journalism. Honestly, auto journalism is some of the least professional writing around, and I'm not just talking about blogs.

Please dont fall into these writers' traps. Think when you read.

Read closely...among reasons to buy a GM vehicle. When looking for a fuel efficient car is GM the first company that comes to mind, no. So of course it's not going to be high on THEIR customers list of priorities. As the same question of a company that is known for fuel economy and you will get a totally different answer.

Damn, tons of America hating on this board all the sudden (for the people, not the cars the U.S. makes)....sad, in a country of 300+ million , it's fair to say we run a WIDE gamut of people in our great country. To see 'we' are all fat and lazy is just as bad as saying that 'we' are "ALL" white blue eyed, white-picket-fenced-home people.

There are clowns in any country, there are tons of spoiled brats, and hard working, family loving people too. Just by shear numbers of the people in our country, there are tons of every facet of our society.

The fact is, in America, we have huge amounts of land, so we can, as a country, 'afford' to stretch our legs more than in other countries. We don't have to drive dinky 1.2L Diesels if we don't want to. We can have bigger homes, if you so desire. We can drive bigger cars that get worse milage, if we want to. We consume more, because we have more.....it's not my fault we have tons of land and the Europeans don't.\

I was just lucky enough to be born here, drive the car I want to, live in the house I want to, marry the one I wanted to, and buy a car because of the cup holders, if I wanted to :)

I don't hate Italy or France because they have prettier big cities than my country does :)

Steve,
That's exactly my point. We have a different situation over here, than in Europe. We have $3.30 (in Southern California for 91) gas. We can consume more because we can afford more (as a nation - not all people here are 'rich', by the way)....

Becasue we can consume more because are economy affords us the ability, we get creamed on by SOME Europeans who look at us in disgust, when I would think that some of 'them' want to be bigger consumers, but can't because they don't have the economy to allow it. Taxes in Europe on gasoline/goods, etc are high because they are trying to preserve what precious resources are left. That's just a fact.

We have more land, people, affluence, goods, needs, wants, etc....That is a fact.

Not all Americans care about how many Big Macs can fit in their glove box, I just don't but that at all, BECAUSE I LIVE HERE, I KNOW WHAT DAY TO DAY LIFE IS!

cckw, you are stereotyping 300+ Million people all at once...terrible.

On the note with Mr. Bush, can anyone list out the official cars of Presidents/Prime Ministers of all the countries? I know for a fact that the Malaysian PM is driven around in a Proton, now that's true patriot! So now, the rest of the list please, anyone?

....and I reckon British PM Mr. Brown is driven around in a Jag XJ? Probably his next car is an XF or the Aston Martin Rapide!

EL34. I'm sorry to inform you, but President Bush was not a fighter pilot during vietnam. Check your facts.

I guess V10 diesels and V12 2-seaters are super fuel efficient?
The difference is Americans don't hide the fact they like big thirsty trucks. Europeans like to pull the holier than America act eventhough they like to burn oil just as much.

Another misconception/delusion is that the US benefits from Middle Eastern oil. N.A.'s oil comes from Canada, Venezuela, Mexico and domestic production.

18% comes from the Persian Gulf as of 2004

The truth is Japan and the useless Europeans need the middle east but can't secure it themselves, hence their resentment and reliance on uncle sam to do it for them.
