Two engines were certified for sale by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, signaling that the car will be made available at the outset only in Ralliart and GTS versions.

The Lancer Sportback attained the EPA city/highway scores of 17/25 mpg for the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and 6-speed TC-SST transmission, a mixture that is particularly Ralliart.

The normally aspirated DOHC 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a choice of five-speed manual (EPA rated at 20/27 mpg) or CVT (21/27 mpg) will be available only in the Lancer Sportback GTS.
