To go up against Mercedes E63 AMG and BMWs M5, Audi is planning to offer the hot RS6. Here is the prototype in testing.

The larger air intakes in the front bumper and the wider fenders and diffuser at the rear, are the key clues as to the true identity of this Audi. And while the S models have four round exhaust pipes, the RS models will receive oval pipes as their distinguishing feature.

We caught the sedan version, but the new RS6 will also be available a wagon. Theyll be powered by the same V10 engine as the S6, but with some help from a turbo delivering about 520-550 horsepower.

This Audi will give the M5 and E63 AMG some strong competition!

The RS6 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September

Why on earth does the M5 need any power boost? Its V10 engine is still winning awards. 0-60 in about 4.1-4.3 seconds. It goes from 0-125 in about 15 seconds. It can do 204 mph without the limiter.

Also it doesn't produce 507 hp but more like 520-530. Many of you kids won't realise this but 507 is a bit of a legendary number for BMW. It has a meaning.

calm down old man,

with the new E63 and RS6, the M5 is behind on HP. I'll expect it to be slower than E63 & RS6 (by a few milliseconds) which does make a difference when your looking for blow $90,000+ on a performance sedan.

Don't deny it, everyone notices and compares the 0-60 times and BMW themselves will not want to lag behind since its the legendary "M5"

Ok, so we pretty much know the styling, and can guestimate the on the engine/HP.

Now the important stuff... How much with this new Beast cost?

Any guesses?

I'm going to start at $92,500 for a "base" RS6

as much as I love BMWs, I'm not gonna be a ignorant.

M5 was the the king when put against the old E55 & S6 but the competition has upped the bar.

The S6 had great handling but lacked the power and now the RS6 will be better than the M5, faster with more punch M5 and handle better on a dry or wet track with the AWD.

I guess the calling the RS6 a VW is one way of not conceding the M5's weakness, a very hollow one indeed.

Dear amazinBimmer,

As a former owner of two BMW 3-series coupes and the current owner of a 2006 Audi A8L (with Sport Package), I can speak objectively on the driving experience asociated with driving both Audis and BMWs - an experience which you apparently have yet to acquire.

I don't know upon which generation of Audi automotiles you base your outrageous opinions, but rest assured that the current Audi lineup is fully competitive with its BMW counterparts. As for your remark about the "numb steering" of Audis, I find A8's steering to be precise, quick and nicely-weighted. In fact, the A8 has much better "road feel" than the excessively light steering on a 2001 BMW 3-series I test-drove.

In other words, old boy, ignorance is bliss only until confronted with reality.

The S6 has already beaten the M5/E63 in several comparos. Now imagine the same beast with about 145 more horsepower. A 600+ version is also planned.

I'm still trying to find out how many degrees that V10 engine has between cylinder banks. I hope it's not bored out with the same machine at same angle as the V8.

I think all Audi V series engines are @ 90 degrees. In fact, the old V6 (the A5 one is a bit different) V8 and V10 share the same bore and stroke. But the RS6 V10 is 5.0 instead of 5.2 as in the S6. Which means it probably has cylinder liners or something because it's a turbo.

Exactly Chewy. When dealing with a Turbo the motor needs to have thicker cylinder walls for the increased pressure due to the turbos and most likeyl they inserted liners. The only concern I would have is the weight of the RS6. Audi is infamous for HEAVY HEAVY sedans that kills performance. If they can lighten it up to under 2 tons...hopefully 3700lbs.
