More pics of the Subaru Impreza STI
Subaru’s upcoming Impreza STI has been spotted undergoing testing at the Nurburgring ahead of its official launch, tipped to be in April of next year. As revealed during the launch of the new Impreza WRC Concept at last week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, engineers are promoting the hatchback variant of the Impreza as the lineup’s new hero because of its advantage over the sedan when cornering. The car’s five-door body is said to positively affect the vehicle’s ability to spin its tail during cornering, improving track times. Read Article

so the hatch causes more body roll in the rear, allowing it to drift?

I believe the hatch design is more rigid, thus allowing for more predicatable oversteer to be built into the car. It has been said tha the sedans are better rally cars than the coupes (same car), as they are more rigid, due to the extra structure. A hatch, based on this, could be even better.

Typically, hatches and estates have better front/rear weight distribution than their sedan counterparts, making them a bit more agile. I've not heard about better rigidity, but it wouldn't surprise me.

coupes are more rigid as they have fewer seams in the structure. doors are structural weak spots. why do you think race car doors don't open?
