NEW Audi A5 Commercial
The new A5 has got such an amazing street presence- and it all starts with those smiling LED headlights. It's got all the great looks from the Audi S5 at the fraction of the cost, so you can use the left over cash for a new set off BBS wheels. We'll take ours in diesel form with the white exterior and black leather.

What 's your color choice on the A5?

That's not how the A5 will sound. Clearly an S5 growl. Even an RS sound. Still looks great. I saw a black S5 in person and it was absolutely stunning. I am so tempted to give up my E46 M3 Convertible for one of these. Does Audi plan on making an A/S/RS5 convertible?

After watching that commercial on Audi's website where the quality is much better, and using high end earbuds, that engine/exhaust idle note is absolutely incredible. Can it really be that throaty and burbley, like an old school American V-8 musclecar? Or is that the commercial's sound technician working overtime?

shhhhhh...don't say that, they'll pull out the S5 card. You know, the car that costs almost $16k more than a 335xi with a non-functioning sunroof, and almost identical performance.

you can get a 335i/xi Coupe for the same price as an A5 3.2. Sorry, but in that price category it's 335 all day.

I assume you can chip the A5, JRob? I know you can on the 335 to make it even more of a beast for like $2k.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 3/4/2008 11:41:47 AM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
bulldogz, I don't know what performance mods are available for the A5 3.2. Since it's naturally aspirated a chip for the A5 won't provide nearly the results the Dinan software does for the 335i (384 hp, 421 lb-ft, $1999 list AND you keep your warranty). I can't imagine there'll be anything for that kind of money that would even raise the A5 3.2 up to stock 335i performance (which is on S5 level stock), let alone chipped 335i performance (a Vishnu 335i was quicker than an RS4 on Edmunds.com).

I like both cars but the performance of the 335 for the money is hard to ignore by comparison, especially since I've been in both and didn't think either one was appreciably nicer than the other.

Actually, you can't. The base price of the S5 ($50K)--which includes nav, xenons, 19" rims, etc--is more along the lines of what a normal 335xi coupe costs.

In addition, expect sub-6 sec acceleration times for the standard A5. The S5 has achieved a 4.5 sec time, with Audi quoting 5 sec, and they quote 6 sec (5.9?) for the A5.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 3/4/2008 12:34:57 PM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
S4, you're a little off on your pricing. At the Cincinnati Auto Expo there was an A5 3.2 w/ nav that had an MSRP of $49k and change. I just built one on Audi's website and the Tiptronic A5 3.2 w/ premium, SLine, and technology package with nav was over $50k. I have a 335xi Coupe on order with similar equipment and the MSRP is $51k. So they're certainly in the same range. The S5 does start at the $50k price but doesn't include nav, technology, and the trim choices cost extra. Once I option it the same it's over $57k.

At $57k if the 335 coupe didn't exist I'd get an A5/S5 over the CLK. But the 335 does exist. I can even slap the Dinan upgrade on there and still have $4k to spare.

"I just built one on Audi's website and the Tiptronic A5 3.2 w/ premium, SLine, and technology package with nav was over $50k."

Hm, then what's the point? That's a little loony. I would definitely take a 335xi--or S5--over it. But if somebody kept the options down, I could see the A5 being a fantastic daily driver, because it has the looks, ample performance, luxury and reasonable MPG going for it.

BTW, the S5 is now available with Tiptronic, and surprisingly, it's still only $58K loaded up. I can't believe I paid $65K for an S4!

...But do I regret it? Not for a second!

Some of you are just too funny...
Yes the A5 and the 3 series are in the same segment, yes they are comparable; but the A5/S5 is more an alternative choice than a direct competition. Smart, educated, internet savvy consumers, with a higher income will prefer the A5/S5 to the 3 series. The qualities of the A5/S5 are completely different than the qualities of the 3 series. Please do yourselves a favor, go see and drive and inspect both cars, you will see that the difference is in the "philosophy". They feel different, they drive different, and even so they are both great cars, they will appeal to completely different consumers. They will be cross-shopped by less educated consumers, I see it everyday, but most of my showroom traffic comes specifically for the A5/S5. They have done their research, they are already Audi customers and/or they are ready to buy another Audi product if the A5 is not available in time or they are willing to wait.

So before you slam down the product or the brand, I suggest;
- grow up
- wait that you are old enough to actually drive
- educate yourself
- look pass your brand bias

For some on this site, all the above apply.

Have a good day

Listen, I like Audi's a lot. But I have to take exeption to the arrogance of this post. Basically what you said is

1) "people who make more money will buy the A5/S5 over the 3-Series coupe".

Shocking, people with more money will buy the more expensive car. I'd also bet the average AGE of A5/S5 buyers is higher, and that the average income for 6-Series owners will be higher than A5/S5 owners as well.

2) "the majority of people looking at the A5/S5 already have Audi's and will either wait for an A5/S5 to become available or buy another Audi product instead if they can't wait."

What was that you were saying about brand bias? That sounds like the exact definition of it right there. Instead of telling everyone on here to open their minds and do research (I'm choosing to ignore your incredibly arrogant implication that doing the research will of course lead to the conclusion that the Audi is "better") and ignore brand bias, why don't you tell your clients to try doing the same thing? There are, in fact, other choices.

+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
wow what a surprise, you work for Audi and these cars never get cross-shopped! Sure dude, Next you'll tell me that people looking for the 6-series also look at the S5 even though it's over 8" shorter, and about $15k less when optioned accordingly? To BMW shoppers/owners, they would consider that downgrading just like you do to the 3-series even though every automag/car enthusiast directly compares them. And why not? Their dimensions are almost identical, the engines almost the same, yet the prices differ somewhat substantially...but in your mind that is because the Audi is for someone with more money. hahaha!!

Forgot something;

As far as power, isn't it time to stop looking at cars and make our choices base on power. How many posts are there on this site and other forums about the "gas prices", "being green", and so on....

If the vehicle has sufficient power to be safe and pleasant to drive, should that be enough? Isn't there anything else that we should expect in a vehicle?

I think Audi has realized that a while back, and for the power hungry, there are (for now) the RS models. But for most of their customers, power is not the issue.

Go drive, even an A4 3.2 Quattro stick shift, and see by yourself, yes it is not a 335, but it is still fun to drive, the car never overwhelms you, you always feel in complete control, and it is quite fun actually.

It is not because you judge a car by its HP that everybody does it, and I think that this trend will disappear anyway.

Got it, so when the Audi costs more with less or equal performance we should now ignore HP numbers, how convenient.

The 335 is a much better value when you also consider the 4 year/no charge service and the significantly higher resale. Audis are atrocious in that aspect, I know because I got my 07' A8 for a song!

well actually Evil, Audi is doing pretty much the same here in Boston. I just got an 07' A8 w/under 10k mi., and they wanted $64k, I offered $57k and they bit. I did buy the addl. warranty btw JRob, but my understanding from talking to others on Audiworld, is they nickel and dime you as to whether certain things are truly "covered", and drag their feet on service bulletins to fix something for you before it happens i.e. a part is known to have issues but we won't look at it until it breaks.

Beautiful car but I'm still a little nervous right now..

But it does cost a bundle! A well equipped A5 with Tiptronic gets all the way up there $50k. That's BMW 5 Series/M3/MB E-Class territory. In other words, too much for a car that's supossed to compete with the BMW 335xi

i am in this market right now, I just returned my 07 A4 after a 24 month lease, and i am really confused on which way to go. It was my second Audi,3rd if you count the TT I got for my GF.

But right now I am borrowing a friends 03 325i,until I make up my mind between the new A4, A5/S5, or 335xi coupe or sedan. Its the friends second car so i can use it for a while till i make my decision. Now the choice was gonna be between the New a4/S4 and A5/S5, but after driving my friends 5 year old 325i, i forgot how good BMW's drive. The 325i feels faster then my A4 3.2(should have gone 2.0T),with alot less HP.And handles alot better, even though its 5 years old.

This choice is gonna be tough and i have some time cause i really want to drive the New A4 first, I had a b6,B7 and now want to see the B8.I test drove the 335i and its great, but I really love the looks of the A5/S5 alot better, but the performance of the 335xi over the A5 really knocks out the A5. It's really between the new S4 ,S5,and 335xi. But i am not sure i want to spend that much more a month(will be leasing, write off). Its around $300 more a month for the S5 over the 335xi Sedan.I cant see spending that much more a month for the same performance, but the S5 blows away the 335xi in looks, inside and out.

To me the A4/S4,A5/S5 is a better overall car then the 335xi,based on fit and finish, interior, looks, i really think the audi's have BMW beat by alot, but the shear performanc(accleration, speed, handling, steering) goes to the BMW,they really are the best handling cars around, outside of real sports cars.

located in NY,and go sking every weekend in the winter,so AWD was inportant, but relocating to north Carolina for work, so quattro and xdrive is not a nessesity anymore. I still would like it,even in the rain it helps so much. But I will only be in NC for maybe 2 years, then back to NY, so if I go with a 3 year lease, i would like to have the AWD then.

I love all those cars, but cant decide, if the S5 was alittle cheaper,it wouldnt be a ?, S5 all the way. Es[ecially since you can chip the 335,and it will blow away the S5,and still be alot cheaper. The s5 and A5 could be chipped, but you might get an extra 10-15 Hp because of them being N/A.

I'll proudly go on record as saying the A/S5's interior and exterior are WAY overrated. It's certainly a pretty car, but people are going on and on like Jesus himself designed them and sent them here to save the automobile kingdom. They aren't the be-all, end-all; nice, but I'll take a 3'er coupe over either.

It's simply STUNNING. Gorgeous. I can't get over it. I couldn't stop staring at it. So far I've seen 4.

The S5's dash is not over-styled if chosen in the correct color. The 3 Series interior is austere by comparison.

While I dont agree at all that the Audis look any better than the 3 coupes, since they dont, I do agree that the ass should decide. If an open-minded and true enthusiast drove the S and the 335 back to back, I can't imagine them picking the S. It's a nice ride, but it's more of a cruiser; the 3 is the performer.
