When the N54 bi-turbo powerplant came out, it was heralded as one of the year's best motors. Now, BMW has made some adjustments and is introducing another engine. But why fix something that isn't entirely broke?
A BMW document from their Canadian operations says that the new motor will be aided by a single, twin-scroll turbo and has the following benefits:
- Lowers weight
- Improves weight distribution
- Improves fuel efficiency
Surprisingly, the new mono turbo motor will not be available with certain models: Canada's 335is coupe/cabriolet and their Z4 sDrivei/is.
Considering there is no power change, there is not much to say against this motor swap. Cheers BMW!
Bimmerpost reports:
"The N55 is the second turbo engine out of BMWs new push towards EfficientDynamics and increased use of turbos as a replacement for displacement. The unit has been has been reviewed and people are generally happy with it, but whats interesting is that now it seems official: BMW will use the N55 as its main workforce with only a few notable exceptions"
