In a world where two-seater sports cars are not exactly selling like hot cakes, one has to question why Mazda would pursue an all-new Miata — better known as "MX-5" — now. Especially when its volume car — the 3 — isn't selling so hot.

Well, there is a method to the company's madness so they say. That's because most folks agree that the brand equity the car instills is worth the R&D. Do you think the company would be known for its driver-focused experience without the Miata? I don't think so.

As far as we know, the company has teamed up with Fiat to make this a little less painful to the company's balance sheets. Considering the passion the Italians bring to the table and the previous iterations of the Mazda being so pure and raw, we're expecting it to be a hot tamale.

But the BIGGER question here is when will it debut? One would think that the best place to have a coming out party would be at the New York Auto Show. At this stage there's no confirmation.
