The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will not delay new rules setting standards for automotive "black boxes" set to take effect on Sept.

In a notice posted Monday, NHTSA rejected a petition by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers — the trade group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and seven others — to delay the new requirements for event data recorders until September 2013.

The "black boxes," officially called event data recorders or EDRs, collect data about the seconds leading up to a crash and can help investigators determine the cause.
