NISSAN GT-R steps up for third win of the Season
On the outskirts of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, Sepang International Circuit (1 lap – 5.542kms) played host to Round 4 of the SUPER GT series. Starting from a fourth-place qualifying result, the WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R (#24 – Joao Paolo de Oliveira/Seiji Ara) took the win. In second place, the pole-starting MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, (#22 – Michael Krumm/Masataka Yanagida) came second, resulting in a resounding 1-2 finish for the NISSAN GT-R. From four rounds this season, this is the third victory for the NISSAN supercar. KONDO Racing was also victorious last year; that win coming in a NISSAN Z. It is the team’s second successive Sepang victory.

Though typically prone to high temperatures and severe humidity, this year’s race got underway in what could be described as comparatively calm conditions at the 4:00pm rolling start, the temperature standing at 30 degrees, with the track measured at 39 Celsius. Starting from pole position, Michael Krumm took charge in the #22 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, leading from when the lights went out to the end of his stint. On lap 24 he came in for his routine pitstop, handing the wheel over to Masataka Yanagida. With fuel and four fresh tyres on the car, he made his exit from the pits a mere one second quicker than the 2nd-placed #1 machine. However, the #1 NSX violently gave chase, and when battling side-by-side on lap 29, made contact with the NISSAN, pushing it into a spin. Tentatively running in 2nd place, the #1 NSX was handed a Drive-through penalty, restoring the #24 GT-R to the head of the field.

However, the WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R, from the winners here last year, KONDO Racing, also moved up to third place immediately after the start, and after the penalty was taken by the #1 car, moved securely into 2nd place. In addition, the driver who took over in the second half of the race, Seiji Ara pushed the #24 car onto the tail of the leading GT-R, presenting the chance of getting by. And so with both cars’ tyres coming to the end of their grip, a momentary chance presented itself on lap 50. Ara, through a decisive maneuvere, was instantly through. From there he made his escape, the accomplishment giving the team their first victory of the season.

In addition to the 100kgs of success ballast on the XANAVI NISMO GT-R (#23 – Satoshi Motoyama/Benoit Treluyer), an additional 75kgs imposed in the form of a smaller diameter air restrictor meant the car was unable to show it’s true performance in official qualifying, and suffered as a result. After qualifying 15th, Benoit Treluyer took the start and made his way round, putting in the laps. For the second half of the race, Satoshi Motoyama took the wheel, giving chase to the cars ahead, though was unable to advance significantly. He brought the car home in 13th place. Sebastien Philippe took the start in the #12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R, though contact with the #32 NSX on the opening lap forced him into a spin. As a result, he had to return to the pits because of trouble in the engine compartment. Repairs meant lost time and the car dropped back. Tsugio Matsuda took over the reins for the second half, the car crossing the line in 14th place. The #3 YellowHat YMS TOMICA GT-R (Ronnie Quintarelli/Naoki Yokomizo) qualified ninth. After battling with other cars, it reached the flag in 9th place.

Like BMW? Toyota has more racing heritage than BMW and has won more races on a whole than BMW. You are in no position to talk smack about the greatness that is the Nissan GT-R. Quality Japanese engineering the Germans can only dream about.

Mike, did you happen to watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans race a couple of weekends back? Btw, BMW won it in 1999.

Oh my gosh MT you are beyond crack. BMW was racing when toyota was but a wet dream. Don't get me wrong Toyota is a good car and I don't hate them but your ignorance makes people want to bash toyota and lexus. the e-30 M3 touring car of the 80's probably has more racing victories than any all toyota combined. See the differenence between you and me is that I am not biased when it comes to the truth, and I am realistic. you are a retard.

Vice versa, most people on this side of the pacific are probably ignorant of Nascar

btw great job nissan; the GTR is one of few cars that advance the motoring world by strongly reminding the established names that they can't just rest on their laurels...

Actually it doesn't, the Toyota 2000 GT is the predecessor to the Supra and of course the 2000 GT came out long before the GT-R.

the 2000gt only raced for one year with very little success, on the other hand the skyline gtr won almost every race it entered in the late 60's and early 70's. so there. want facts. i got them.

God call F1, however the GTR haws de-throned the 911 more than once and I am a german car fan. fact is the GTR does have more racing heritage than the Toyota. And I like toyota too, so my comment isn't biased.

I'm not certain about this, but is this a regular GT-R (obviously lots of engineering modifications to meet the specs of the series), or is it a completely one-off race vehicle with a GT-R skin, as is the Lexus SCs in this series or the Mercs/Audis in DTM?

(By the way, its a serious question, and its not intended to degrade any manufacturers)

Tube frame racer, with a racing V8, RWD. pretty much nothing to do with the regular GT-R, as are all the GT cars in this series.

If I saw this MichaelTaylor troll I would probably strangle him. BMW has no racing history? Are you serious? If they had such a racing history wouldn't you think their lineups from Toyota & Lexus would have a proper sports car?. What's a SC430 because it's definitely not a sports car.

He really is quite the retard, and as much as I hate to say this, he is right about Toyota having more racing history. Completely wrong about BMW not having any, cause they are quite renowned for touring car racing, but Toyota have competed and won in almost every major type of racing there is, all over the world. From being 7 times WRC champions (4 time constructor, 3 times driver), To Indy, Champ car, IMSA, Baja off-road racing and the list goes on (and that is just on your side of the Atlantic).

Toyota don't make sports cars anymore because they don't make much profit from them. That's simply it. They don't need an image car to help them move their product. I think they realize that they are lacking in this aspect though, and between now and 2011, you should see at least 4 sports cars, as well as a new SC that should be a much better one that the rolling egg they have out now.

And since they came back to F1 in 2000 as an engine supplier and then a full team they have sucked royally.

From last season:

Well, can't expect to be on top forever. That will be a bit boring for F1.
It has attracted Ross Brawn, and history does repeat sometimes...

BTW, honda has been supplying engine since 1983 to date, 31 years F1 commitment (incld '64-'68)
