By next spring, the entire work force (about 4,700 members) of New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.

(NUMMI) will lose their jobs, according to Nikkei business daily. NUMMI is the joint venture between Toyota Motor Corp. and the former General Motors Corp. in California.

Late last month, Toyota had indicated that it will end output at the California plant it has shared with GM for 25 years. Immediately after making the announcement, it received plenty of criticism from labor and politicians. Production will be halted at the end of March 2010. Reasons cited include the overcapacity of the carmaker’s plant as demand is very low during this recession.

With unemployment currently at 12.2% in California and no other auto manufacturing plant in the state, this is really bad news for the workers.

Free health care ain't gonna matter to these people. They need JOBS!

using GM UAW workers.
GM decided to end(well Obama dictated) Pontiac.
Why would Toyota continue to use excess GM factory space and workers when Toyota has their own new factories sitting idle?

nummi was 80% Toyota vehicals and capacity and no the unions only own 13% of GM becuse GM could not afford schedeuld payments into our union owned health car called veba. Trust me we would rather have the cash over stock.

That new Buick LaCrosse exterior looks pretty sharp. Too bad GM decided to have the interior designed in China. Guess they figured there's no point in bribing the uaw since they give unwavering support regardless.

Huu all cars are designed by designers of different countrys and differnt nationalities for instance the person the designed helped designed your next Toyota may have beeen on a kia design team a last year.

I don't know, Toyota has CALTY in Newport Beach. TTC is in Ann Arbour.
Sounds domestic to me. I know Toyota has design centres worldwide but its just ironic GM screams buy domestic etc etc and then go and outsource the work.

"Engineers of different countries" is different from "engineers in different countries".

Wonder if this is where people were expecting Buick to dump its gov't bailout money?
