Bigger and badder than before.

I ask you, will this car have competition?

although i am sure the next generation 7 will be a great car, the mercedes-benz s class is unrivaled. no car will ever beat the s class. the bmw might have better handling but in the overall package, the s is better.

I agree, mercs. As biased as you probably are, the S simply is the best in its class. If it was just a LITTLE smaller, I would really want one (and I will drive one), but even with the AMG Package, it would make me look like another middle-aged guy with an S-Class...

"although i am sure the next generation 7 will be a great car, the mercedes-benz s class is unrivaled. no car will ever beat the s class. the bmw might have better handling but in the overall package, the s is better. "

I know this sounds very fanboy-ish but you're actually spot on. The S-class has always been and will always be tke king of this segment. Ask any automotive journalists. But nowadays it has some pretty good competition (LS460/600H, A8, Siebener, ..)

bmwdrvrbmwdrvr - 6/20/2007 8:44:18 AM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
that is really wishful thinking to say that the s class cant be beat, and the new 7 series, XJ and a8 havnt been released yet, the s class is a great car in this segment and certainly looks that much better competing with cars that are on their last leg except the ls(which still finishes low in tests), but realistically the 7 and a8 have won tests from the previous generation s class, im sure the 2 will do the same when they are redone.

Will_Will_ - 6/20/2007 9:01:46 AM
+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Saying the S-Class will always be the class leader is total crap. These S-Class fanboys are ridiculous. the S-Class is a great car, but if the 7-Series offers better luxury, comfort, and sport, then credit must be given. And if it's not the 7-Series, then as someone said, we still have a new XJ and A8 waiting in the wings...

SevorbeupstryIsBackSevorbeupstryIsBack - 6/20/2007 3:07:14 PM

The XJ will never be a class-leader because that's not the reason why it's built for. The A8 and Siebener always have good shot at it but never quite made it. And Mercedes will keep on improving the S-class.

Every car can be beaten (except the Veyron)

It didn't. It definitely did NOT. The S-class then was still the pre-facelift model and was starting to get the electronic gadgetry right. The 7 was overcomplicated when it came out, it was the first iDrive and it was a mess. I can't recall ANY comparison test where the BMW came out on top.

M53RM53R - 6/20/2007 8:36:39 AMView My AgentSpace
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Well maybe it did not, but all the tech in that car made the S class very ordinary. It also made the S class look dated from outside, even though the 745Li wasnt a beauty in itself. Remember this is when the 7 series outsold the S, because the 7 was way better.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 6/20/2007 9:20:35 AM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
In additon to outselling the competition the 7-Series came in first place in several comparison tests between 2002 and 2006, tests that included the S-class (among others). Aside from iDrive (which now everyone has copied) and things like the "Bangle butt" (subjective, AND everyone has copied) most testers loved the car.

These things are cyclical. The S-class is new, it's been a critical darling, and it's sold well. When the new 7 comes out the same thing will happen, and it'll happen again when the new A8 comes out, and again when the new S comes out and so on.

The 7 certainly didn't make the W220 look dated, either. From its first day to its last, the last-gen S-Class was always a very elegant sedan that could look good in any situation.

Will_Will_ - 6/20/2007 1:30:45 PM

Many in the automotive world remarked that the 7-Series made the W220 S-Class look dated, and it did towards the end of its production cycle. Luckily that probably wont be the case with the new W221.

You have to give BMW one thing: They are VERY good at the whole camo thing... They show you only the parts of the car they want you to see... Here for instance, the only thing clearly visible is the rear. The rest is just covered is completely covered up... Can't see anything from these spy shots... As usual!

This is some very good camo. Based on this it looks like the 7-Series is only getting a minor refresh, not a whole new design.

If I had to choose between the S, BMW 7, and A8L I would probably choose the Audi A8L because of its aluminum body and superior AWD with Torsen center differential. Mercedes S comes a close second - it does have the world's best seats but the A8L is also very comfy. Styling flaws in the Mercedes are a cheap clock with chrome hands and bezel that makes it look like something they picked up at a dollar store. I also do not like the fact that certain desirable options are available in Canada only with the dreaded wood-trimmed steering wheeel. I had time to kill yesterday and dropped by the Mercedes showroom again and sat in those wonderful S-Class seats only to see glare in my eyes from the shiny wood on the steering wheel. That's a safety hazard.

What is it with you and seats and steering wheels? Are those the deciding factors you look for when buying a car? Wood trim on a steering wheel could potentially be a safety hazard if the whole steering wheel was covered in wood, but there isn't a single car in that segment that has wood all the way around. There's always a place to grasp the wheel without touching wood. Also, the analog clock in the S-Class doesn't look cheap to me. In fact, I think they're made by IWC.

The wood is optional anyway...
And the cheap clock? That clock is in no way cheap...
chose a car on its merits, not whether it's "More advanced".
If a Buick was alumnium but was as bad as Buicks are would you buy one?

"Styling flaws in the Mercedes are a cheap clock with chrome hands and bezel that makes it look like something they picked up at a dollar store."

I'm a guy that is totally nuts about good automotive interiors. That includes everything: materials, design, quality, fit and finish, heritage, ...
And I can assure there nothing cheap looking about the W221's interior! I ordered a CL which basically has the same interior and it is the best interior I have ever seen. It's even better finished than a Bentley or Rolls interior.

For your information EnnNorak, that "cheap" clock of yours is actually from IWC Schaffhausen! I heard the clock alone is already a 1000 quid.

As much as I want to think that the 7 Series is a class leader, I know that the S Class will always be the best.

It is simply what it was built to be.
The simple fact that the car is huge and every fitting chrome laden, shows that Mercedes Benz build the S Class with no boundaries, no expense spared.
The car itself is the image of Mercedes Benz.

I honestly think that the S Class is built not for the customer, but for the brand.
This is what attracts its buyers, Mercedes distinction alone.
It may look hideous and all electronics buggy; but when it wears the three-point star, it will sell.
