After spending time behind the wheel of Cadillac's powerful new sport sedan, we weren't disappointed.

The 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, equipped with a supercharged 556-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 and a six-speed manual transmission, accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds (4.3 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) and crossed the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 115.3 mph.

What this means to you: GM product head Bob Lutz promised that this CTS-V would put the M5 on the trailer. According to our test numbers, he's right. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

Yeah...and what amazes me is GM's confidence in their automatic transmissions.

They said and proved through the EPA that their new autos are not only faster but also more fuel efficient?! ...and that an auto could beat the M5 on the Nurburgring?! What's up with that?!?!!?!

I mean...If GM was/is so good, why couldn't they show us that a decade ago?!?!?! (My tone towards GM right now is praise, but at the same time, I think they've been plain STUPID!!!)

GM has effectively proven that it can make a luxury performance vehicle, and do it right. The General hasn't been quick to move forward with plans for a larger flagship vehicle b/c they want to do it right (the 1st time, again).

The CTS-V shows that GM is capable of making viable competition for the tried-and-true stalwarts from various countries. Deep down, most of know Chrysler & Ford as well, are capable of competing in the performance/luxury realm. But, the American auto giants must fix & maintain the health of their core business in order to keep their doors open 1st...then they can make the halo toys for the big boys...

It better school it. How long has the M5 been out? 2005. If a new vehicle that is trying to compete four year later (2009 model) does not beat it, it should NOT be released.

Im sure that the fanboys will have something to say about this but good for Caddy. If someone else backs these numbers up, then it is truly a new day for your grandpa's Cadillac. Wow, I am seriously drooling over this car. The price of an M3 while blasting away the AMG and M Cars. Not to mention that this just might be most absolutely perfectly styled sedan on the entire planet both exterior and interior.

i'm sure it will have some caddy feel. But like the current cts, it wont be that old school i'm driving a boat with so much sway i have to puke.

but its hard to drive like an old school caddy with a slalom speed of 70+mph

I would never buy an M5 because of the price but I would not buy this either. I am not the biggest fan of the design.

yes...it does school both the M5 and E63 AMG for sure. I wonder what happend to the soul of the BMW M5 and MB E63 AMG after it get spank this Cadillac.

Oh, I forgot car does Not have a soul, LOL....And to make thing even better, it was beaten the Good old American Cadillac Car.

this cts is not even in the class of the M5 its in the M3 class and this sedan may school the M3 which i doubt because i need a side-by-side comparison test before I jump the gun. now if they can make the new STS-V beat the M5 yeah then that would be a nice comparo. dont compare a car that weighs less and smaller than the M5 come on this article holds no weight to the M5

If a car is nothing more to you than a transportation appliance then you will not see it as having a "soul". If however you have grown attached to your car to the point where it is more to you than just a machine then it could be argued that it has a soul. Although this word is not really appropriate.

Well, it should be fast. A 6.2L V8, supercharged. Lets wait for numbers on test track vs drag strip. Thats where the ISF got spanked.

Impressive performance for the CTS-V and good job. But, shouldn't be put in the smaller category of the M3, C63, IS-F, and RS4?

Why targeting the larger size M5?

People,

There's more to life that flat-out straight-line speed. Both cars are super fast (overkill). I'd take the car that is slightly slower (but still ridiculously fast) and offer the better refinement. And that car would be the M5.

But seriously, would that car really be the M5? I hate the M5's interior (plain jane and flat as a board, not to mention the complete lack of buttons) and the exterior still hasn't grown on me yet. The Caddy probably offers much more doodads and goodies and I doubt that the caddy is a slouch in the handling dept. So maybe it’s the Caddy after all. Did I contradict myself?

I still wouldn't say "schooled" but this generation M5 isn’t head-and-shoulders above it’s peers like the previous M5’s

not to knock bmw but they do seem like they are starting to fall off a bit. a few years back this article wouldn't be, meaning, nothing could touch the M5 but now it seems like it's a new day. maybe everyone is evolving at a faster rate than bmw.

BMWs aren't falling off, it's just everyone else catching up. It's only been 6 years since Cadillac's revival with the CTS. Six years ago, all BMW had to worry about was Audi and Mercedes. Now they got it coming at them from all different directions.

if that was the case 1dott why does it seem like everyone is just going after BMW....everyone is making a car to compete with a BMW or their Motorsport division. look at cadillac they need to compete with the M5, look at Audi they made the RS6 to compete with the M5, Then you have infiniti they are comparing their G37 coupe to the M3 and 3 series come on BMW is not falling off everyone is trying to keep up from what I see because almost every luxry car company (EXCLUDING EXOTICS) is trying to make a car compete with BMW so tell me how they are falling off

really because all the low mileage ones I have been seeing are going for 60 grand the sticker price for a M5 is 120 grand then yeah i would say that is true. it depends on what you call low mileage

My friends dad has a CTS V I think its an 07 and that car is insane. He's had a few issues but nothing too bad or expensive. He's planning on going to a drive event for the new version and is thinking of picking a new one up. The CTSV is for american far fanatics just like vettes. If you want an M5 buy one. You can still beat 99% of the cars on the road.

Not taking anything away from the "2009" CTS-V, but 50 more ponies, two years newer, that would be expected, against a 507hp 2007 M5 and a 500hp 2007 MB E63 AMG...

The only thing is, I'll wait for other sources, because Edmunds is not exactly the authority on sporty cars...

Yeah it schools the bimmer alright, with faster 1/4 mile time and trap speed, and the interior alone schools the M5 which has a late 70's 80's styling when disco was heard on the dancefloor :)

How does it school the M5? Road & Track and Motortrend have both got the M5 0 to 60 in 4.1 & 4.2 seconds, the 1/4 mile in 12.25 & 12.24 . Arent both of those times quicker than the CTS-V? Also, when edmunds tested the M5, if you read the notes they stated that the track has been known to be very slippery and affects the performance of M5.

Road & Track just did a similar comparison test to what Edmunds just did and on a track the CTS-V "won by the skin of its teeth". Both cars took turns beating the other slightly, the CTS-V got one more run in than the M5 and was able to beat the M5's best time by 0.5 seconds. Then they had to stop running the cars to continue construction on the track.

Anyway, I applaud Caddy for what they did with the CTS-V, especially for the price. I'll say this, though -- what the test restuls tell me is the M3 would probably beat the CTS-V. The M3 is actually quicker around a track than the M5 (higher skidpad grip and slalom, shorter braking distances, almost identical acceleration times... plus the Ring time was better for the M3 than the M5). And the M3 and CTS-V will be priced similarly. But of course the M3 is smaller than the CTS-V, too, so for someone looking for a larger performance car on a budget (compared to an M5 or E63 AMG anyway) the CTS-V is a solid competitor.

WOW that is awesome. But realistically, when you are talking about this kind of elite performance and this kind of a price tag, the only reason you would rather have one of these over the other is either brand loyalty or style. To me, the CTS looks a lot better in and out. To get a 10th here or there... gravy.

good point E92 its the same plastic stuff they have been using for years......I dont know about you 1dott but bmws have been screaming luxury to me.....the interiors need alittle work but definitley says your driving a luxury car when I see them passing....from the design to technology to the overall package

b7fan - remember, i drive a '08 650 almost everyday and have you ever heard me say anything about the interior? nope because it's plain and bland. when i leave the 6 and hop into the '02 A4 i don't feel like wow, this interior looks cheap or old.

M5 looks better? I love how bimmer fanboys get so picky when the M5 loses. I'd take the CTS-v x10 based on interior and exterior looks. And the LS engine from GM is some of the best in the industry. Don't give me that BMW conquers bs btw. Its even less compllicated than that silly SMG.

I'm glad to see that GM is taking the same tone as Lexus and simply building better cars than the Germans. Outside of all the blogs and comments, they are building a better performer for far less money. They haven't been the most reliable cars in the past but surpassing BMW in build quality shouldn't be hard since they currently have below industry average quality and reliability. I think its about time BMW make better cars for a better price or they'll soon find themselves out of the market. Anyone who paid 100K for an M5 will surly be pissed off to see a kid (who probably can't afford a BMW) blow by him in a car half the price.

Isn't GM in posting like 15billion dollar record losses. WTF are they spending their money on, trying to beat the M division of BMW. Bad timing for this car further to that this is such a retarded comparison. I could list quite a few reasons I just bought an 08 M5 (lightly used) for the same price of this "killer" car and none of them have to do with speed or acceleration. Do you actually think these are going to sell outside of North America? Comparing this to the M5 only goes to show how amazing of a sedan it is and will always be the bench mark of four door sporting luxury. Once I actually see CTS-Vs on the track schooling M5s and the like then I will shut up... and once I see this car turn my head then I will also shut up... and finally when I lust for one I will eat my words. Until then I commend GM for making such a great vehicle just like the Corvette Z06 and the Escalade etc. but I will still always lust the M while many of you will use all types of reasons to justify not paying the premium prices to buy them.
