It won't be long before entire bodies are made of carbon fiber and these will be long-lasting, strong, light, and a just about as cheap as fiberglass is today. Consumer demand and economies of scale will drive the cost down to the point where car makers can't afford not to adopt this technology.

Light-weight bodies will also mean huge material savings in lighter unsprung components like wheels and suspension parts. National fuel savings will be huge.

I don't think the manufacturing technology for carbon fiber is that close to mass-production levels. Fiberglass is much easier to mass-produce. As such, I feel like we are still a long way off from seeing carbon fiber cars being the norm.

So if you were to install everything, how much weight does it shave off of the car? Or is all of this entirely cosmetic?

Good question, especially given the new car weighs a bit more than the IX but responds very nicely to bolt-ons. The ultimate mod???

JVince, time is relative. I claim that carbon fiber will eventually save the auto industry.
