New Chinese Luxury Sedan to Utilize Mercedes V-8 and 7 Speed Transmission

Ssangyong Motor Co Ltd names its new premium sedan the Chairman W and discloses it is powered by a 5.0L V-8 engine, the largest passenger-car engine in Korea.

Both the engine and 7-speed automatic transmission will be imported from Mercedes-Benz in Germany, Ward's is told.

Ssangyong, which primarily is a light-truck maker that became a unit of China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. in 2006, has enjoyed a long-standing licensing agreement with Mercedes.

The Chairman W, the auto maker’s first new model in 10 years, also will be available with a 3.2L inline 6-cyl. mill produced by Ssangyong, a company spokesman says.

The luxury sedan will go on sale in South Korea next March, with the reported goal of selling 20,000-units in the domestic market annually and 10,000 abroad, primarily in China.

The fact that they're using Merc's 5 V-8 liter is smart. But, one thought comes to mind, and it's a HUGE, but possible, "What if?" so here goes. What if Ssangyong Motor Co does Merc's V8 what Koenigsegg did with with Ford's 4.6 liter V-8? Use it, study it, learn form it, and then make something like it but....BETTER. Is it possible for them to become real player in the next decade, that's the real question that comes to mind when a read this article.

Not really... You can say what you want, but the Lexus V8 for instance is very advanced! Using a Mercedes design doesn't automatically make the car better than the rest. Actually, engines are not what Mercedes are known for doing best. And the engine they'll use is probably an older enine design as it was with other ssangyong models...

SsangYong have always used the Old Mercedes Engines.

Musso, Korando, Rodius, Rexton all uses MB's 2.7 V6 and 3.2 V6. Rexton has a MB's Diesel engine.

So this shouldn't be surprising. btw previous SsangYong chairman were design wise too a clone of MB's S Class (W124).

On other note, Indian automaker, Tata also uses old MB's engines, their commercial vehicles like big busses and trailers uses old MB commercial vehicle's engines and other mechanical stuff.

s4, there may be some truth to american nationalism keeping the big three afloat. certain parts of the country look down on imports.

i believe Ssangyong has been using mercedes parts for years now. apparently they had leased the rights to produce the w124 chassis 300e/e320 as long as they styled the body different than mercedes did. i don't think they were allowed to sell it in certain markets either.

it's the Ssangyong Chairman.

Mercedes (and everyone else) is going to regret teaching China how to build their own cars, all for some BS market that will probably be closed off in about 10 years.

Maocedes is just around the corner.

are you suggesting they opened their markets just to develope a bit, then close up again? they may have a tough time with that one.

1995,
Yes, they held up RIM's Blackberry release until China Telecom could copy it and release it as the Redberry first.

Everything has to be a joint venture to ensure a domestic government controlled enterprise will not have to waste resources on R&D until they catch up.

Why should China let Japan/Europe/US sell millions of cars when they can sell their own to their citizens?

China is more concerned with stability and becoming the next superpower, and Western corporate short-term greed is helping them achieve that. In our future war, the most effective weapon will be economics (we lucked out that they were stupid for holding so much US currency), not bombs. No exports means no jobs means civil strife. 1.4 billion hungry and pissed off people are hard to control.

You should google China, espionage, corporate, military and see how China just wants to be friends.

Oh, and they won't have a tough time at all.
As part of the deal for Bubba Clinton's support for ascension to the WTO, China was to open up their markets and endorse competition. That didn't work out like promised (big surpriese there). Chinese financial institutions still enjoy interest free loans from the gov't and the clamp down on intellectual piracy and counterfeiting only occurs when they need to put on a show. Do you ever wonder why no Chinese products are ever counterfeited?

Sorry, I got my companies mixed up. RIM-China Telecom was delayed until China Unicom could release a pirated Blackberry.

The West will just have to settle for the usual "We'll look into it" from the communists as they merrily copy everything in sight.
