New Infiniti FX Slaps BMW X6 Upside The Head In New Review!
Infiniti shook the entire SUV perception when it rolled out the original FX in 2004.  Love it or hate it, the styling and design is something that has become part of the automotive landscape.  Magazines commented on the 20" rims that came from the factory, and the swept roof line which decreased the "utility" component of the Sport Utility concept.  For Infiniti it was a hit however, and without changing the formula too much they are about to unleash round 2 of the FX to the car buying public.

In the meantime, BMW obviously took notice and has offered us their take on the sporting SUV with the X6.  Yeah, you can argue the X5 has visions of grandeur in terms of its sport component, but at the end of the day unless equipped with the right option groups it really became an alternative to the minivan for soccer moms everywhere.  With the new X5, BMW stepped it up a notch, but it is still a SUV at heart offering additional options including  a third row.

Not so with the X6.  Talk about a statement.  Park one of these next to almost anything else that claims to be an SUV of sporty intention and the picture that develops speaks for itself.  Of course had this been done with the original FX at the time it was rolled out, a similar picture would have developed.

So is BMW copying the FX concept with the X6 and if the answer is YES, which is better???

As you know Agent 001 spent some time in an X6 this year, and he was shocked as to the reaction it received as he drove around Southern California.  Give that some time to sink in, HE WAS SHOCKED AS TO THE REACTION IT RECEIVED AS HE DROVE AROUND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.  Why the caps, Southern California is a car mecca.  Trends started there trickle out to the rest of the country and the world.  The manufacturers know this and have set up numerous design studios there to capitalize on this fact.

And the X6 captured the attention of people there, and feat that is hard to accomplish.

But is it good enough to go up against the FX.

Well both Motor Trend and Automobile magazines asked that very question in their July 2008 issues, and the results are interesting, BUT ARE THEY CORRECT?

MT compared a X6 xDRIVE 35i to a FX35 while Automobile used the X6 xDRIVE 50i against the FX50.

Both magazines rank the Infiniti ahead of the BMW.  For the Infiniti fan boys, you can stop reading now, the rest of you read on as the Agents here at AutoSpies.com aren't sure the magazines got it correct.

Allow me to make the case...

MT - "...Infiniti FX35 - Less sexy, with more utility and a surprisingly smooth ride.  Add in a far thriftier price tag, and the FX is clearly the more rational buy."

Automobile - "...the FX50 makes more sense to us - with nearly identical performance, five passenger seating, and a lower price it clearly will appeal to more buyers."

The testing done by both magazines confirm that the BMW's outperform the Infiniti in almost all of the tests run, and in general both magazines really have nothing bad to say about the X6 with either engine.

People don't choose an Infiniti over a BMW simply based on price.  BMW's are more expensive for a reason, and people are willing to pay a premium to state they drive a BMW.

Is it just me or did both magazines MISS THE POINT???

Allow me to quote MT:

"Shame she doesn't drive as good as she looks."

"The FX35 has many of the X6's strengths, none of its weaknesses, and a few great advantages of its own-for a lot less money."

That, my friend, is the point of MT's review, which is why I consider it the most trustworthy US car mag.

I also think 00J is missing the point here: it's questionable to compare 2 SUV based only on engines or performance test numbers. You just won't buy a SUV solely for its performance, especially when it cost more than a pretty practical 335.

they totally missed the point. The X6 was not designed to compete with the Infiniti. The X6 is targeting the Porsche Cayenne & Range Rover Sport Buyers. Both of which are more expensive than the Infiniti. As you can clearly see the X6 5.0L is the better performer in acceleration, handling & stopping. Price again is the Fx's only solice in order to best the BMW.

what sh*t ... you people on here amaze me at times. S4 hit it right on the head. Believe me, BMW didnt create the X6 to compete with the FX. Is it a competitor, yes. So is the Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Cayenne.

Status with any luxury car plays an important role. How the car makes one feel whether driving or sitting in your driveway. The last time I checked, when I valet parked my car, the restaurant parked it out front due to being a nice luxury car, 2008 535i. When is the last time you saw a restaurant park a honda civic right out in front? never. not saying anything negative about the civic, but there is no status with having a car like that. People that cant afford these cars have no concept on why one car is more than another. It is like some of these Car Magazines in the sole reason for their Opinion and base their entire logic around it. that kills me.

No one needs a $50k car or truck. It is a want. I dont like the Infiniti FX. It is a nice performer? yes. Is it attractive? my opinion a resounding NO. I would never spend $50k, $60k , $70k on a vehicle that I find unattractive no matter how fast it is. Performance is very important for myself in how it handles, accelerates, and brakes, but exterior is also important. The X6 for me is the best of both worlds. It is what I am getting to replace my 2008 535i when it comes off of lease next year.

First off, you are a reporter so avoid saying "For the Infiniti fan boys, you can stop reading now, the rest of you read on as the Agents here at AutoSpies.com aren't sure the magazines got it correct."
Second, "BMW's are more expensive for a reason, and people are willing to pay a premium to state they drive a BMW." ...What was the reason?
AutoSpies has earned my respect throughout the years, please don't ruin this site. But I know 001 is a pretty smart man so I'm sure he'll have a talk with you soon.

Amen & well said. And to note that the reviews noted nearly identical performance (I think 0-60 was 0.3 better in the X6?).

Also, I did take a look at an X6 at a dealer and it looks great... from the front. And the interior is great... when you are in the front seat. The back seat would have to be a no mans land for us >6footers.

But hell, who cares about the back seat when you're going to buy one of these anyway. ;)

I've seen more than a couple negative BMW articles on this site over the past month, don't you think BMW would have paid AutoSpies to keep quiet on the article stating a brand new M3 tranny failed?

Furthermore I can remember this website being anti-bangle after the first few designs released under his direction were far from his better work.

What a BS thread. FYI, the Automobile Magazine article wasn't a "ranking", they merely said the FX was more practical and less expensive and was likely to sell more. It was the "rational" choice. Well guess what genius? That's the idea. A RAV4 is a more rational buy than any of these, but who cares? Where was the RAV4 in the comparison?

Someone with $80k to blow on a loaded X6 is buying the statement the vehicle makes. Same thing with a $100k ML63, a $90k Range Rover, a $100k Cayenne Turbo, etc. Hell, even the FX is a statement. It was designed to get attention and it values performance over utility, same as the X6, just for less money. No one "needs" an FX, or an X6, or any of those vehicles. They buy them because they WANT them.

Look, there'll always be cheaper vehicles that do similar things. Always. That doesn't make them better or more desirable, it just makes them cheaper. A Timex keeps time better than a Rolex. Does anyone need a $50k watch when a $50 watch works just fine? Hell no. But which one would most people rather have?

STATUS. That's what you're buying. You're not buying ANY of these cars, FX included, because it was "the best buy", or "the most practical", and screw "the rational choice". Throw those out the window. They're useless when talking about cars this expensive. If that's all people cared about everyone would drive Hyundai's and Kia's. But they don't. When you buy a vehicle in this segment, what you're deciding is "how much status do you want, and how much are you willing to pay to get it"? That's it. Period. End of story. Now everyone can get on with their lives instead of arguing about the validity of vehicles 99.99% of the people on here can't afford anyway. It's getting ridiculous.

JRobUSC, I think you are correct in what you write. Neither car is bought due to price, however the other side of that is since neither is bought due to price, why keep making price an issue and simply name the better of the 2 cars. Of course if that was done price would work its way back into the discussion.

I pose the question to you then, what criteria should be used in making the decision as to which is better. Is it performance, versatility, comfort, pricing etc. and within that vein, how is each category weighted to insure a fair and consistent test each and every time no matter who the competitors are.

exactly why are people comparing an unpratical very expensive suv to a relatively cheap 350z based SUV and say its cheaper and more pratical.....not trashing the SUV but they could have came to that conclusion without a test. Why no post the CAR magazine review of the X6, FX, and Range Rover Sport, I'm really gettin sick of reading mags that let cars win based on price and practicality this whole FX beating the X6 even though its much better in every area because of price and practicality is just as bad as the M3 beating the GTR......i mean seriously.....what next a Genesis and CLS comparison where the Genesis wins because its alot cheaper and more pratical

ym73ym73 - 6/4/2008 8:05:57 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
That's simple. If performance is similiar ( a fraction of a second doesn't make a car better unless you race and these cars are definitely not intended for a race track)and the interior is fairly similiar then you look at price. Then based on the price difference each person has to decide if the extra prestige a badge gives is worth the money. Will people envy you more for having a BMW over an infinity? Will you feel better about yourself? For me, I would go with the infinity because I don't believe BMW has the same status as before. Because of the cheap subsidized leases, its too easy to own a BMW. Except for the top end models, people just aren't that impressed anymore (at least in Los Angeles).

BMW knows that Infiniti has made it a personal thing to beat them at the game that they have been in the number 1 position for so many years (Sporty Performance). Now since Nissan and Toyota have come out with their highline/luxury lines (Infiniti & Lexus)BMW has competion now...REAL competion...all BMW fans can say (and I'm so tired of hearing it) "oh thats just a dressed up Nissan or Toyota". Thats not a bad thing...it just means that Nissan & Toyota are good cars. Now im starting to see where BMW is starting to copy Infiniti with the 3 series coupe(my personal opinion) for years the 3 series coupe has looked like a 2 door car, now since the g35 coupe has meet and even exceeded the BMW's performance in some arenas now they are starting to slope and pull the back end of the car out so it looks more like a sports car (like the G35 always has been). BMW has a long (and great) history before Infiniti & Lexus came but they need to stop the hate and give them their props that they are due. Infiniti & Lexus are about 20 years old where BMW is at least 2x that ( i dont know when the started).

The FX is a nice ride but in my opinion the new X6's twin turbo 8 is amazing, it drives better, feels more expensive (because it is) and has more exclusivity.

But I wouldn't be disappointed if all I could afford is the FX (ooh, I'll get heat 4 that!).

For $15,000 more or so, if the X6 wasn't a better car than the FX50, then that would be truly PATHETIC.

I'm not a big fan of the front of the new FX, but looking at those two photos, the X6 looks very akward compared to the photo of the FX.

I think it's probably more so the angle of the photo. It's a bad angle to try and show off the lines of the X6. Looks like an Aztec's rear.

Personally I like the new FX styling better than the X6. Both will sell really well I am sure. But you are also comparing a segment creator to a new guy.

It is the same as the M3 and IS-F comparo. The IS-F is the new guy and the M3 has been around the block. So most likely the new guy is not going to get the honors, it's a pretty status quo thing. So when BMW created an X6 and the FX was redesigned and updated, it already had a bias as being a segment leader for a few years, now a new guy comes around and it has to match up. Sure it was a little faster, but I don't personally go flying around to be .3 seconds faster to 60.

Porsche Cayenne? Who said that!?! The Porsche Cayenne is a X5 competitor all day, just as the Range Rover is. For this segment you have the FX, X6, Range Rover Sport. Besides, a Porsche SUV is just a funny idea to me anyways.

Yes people don't buy these cars for practicality, they buy them because they want them as so many stated. But I also know that the FX has a reputation in this segment, I know I know it's a BMW they say, but it is a brand new BMW line so it has to muscle into the sector. Plus who doesn't turn their heads when you hear an Infiniti exhaust roll buy, that tone is awesome!

How did their engineering beat the BMW when the BMW beat it in performance. Sure the FX is less expensive and that alone makes it appealing, but Jrobusc said it best. I wouldn't say the FX out-engineered the BMW, I think if they would change the front end and at least change the side grill, it since it is actually functional, It would be more appealing. To me the BMW is very unique, and from some angles it does look kinda wierd, at least in the photos, likewise the FX looks wierd from certain views. Personally I don't think you could lose with either, but I kinda like the BMW especially if price wasn't an option.

It is okay to be biased. Like Road & Track's editor said he likes the Porsche 911 Turbo over the Nissan GTR because it has an "it" factor. I interpret that as the "prestiage" factor, or whatever that means. I can draw parallel to the X6 here, which is also a capable contender. Its okay to express an opinion, just admit it is biased, is that so hard in this forum?

I own an FX35 - and I love the way the X6 looks and the potential it has (I have yet to drive it). But at $70,000, there's no way I'd even consider buying it, it is overpriced.

At $70,000, I'm buying an M5 and worrying about the snow when winter rolls around.

You mean a used M5.

A new one is close to 90k these days...better keep coding ;)

For $70K you can get a loaded 535xi wagon.

"For $70K you can get a loaded 535xi wagon."

That's a high price for "tacky".

I think S4 was pointing out how ridiculously overpriced they are.

Obviously a used one.

I actually really like the 535xiT and am considering it as my next purchase... Of course, it would be all-black with an M kit, but that's not the point.

As much as I love BMW's I have to say I find the FX more attractive, despite the over-sized front end that will take some time to grow on me.

In my opinion,

BMW didn't need this X6 model in their lineup. They already have a good looking X5 SUV and a smaller X3 so the X6 fills in no niche market. As for crossovers cars like the FX has already established itself and it doesn't look half bad.

So sorry BMW but you deserve the slap upside the head!

Oh I forgot. That BMW engine sounds awesome though!

X6 is better. But the FX was there first with the concept.

The FX is simply grotesque, nothing works on the design, and comes across decidedly like a caricature of a real car, almost cartoon-like. Especially with its exaggerated features and tacky chrome elements.

I saw the new BMW X6 in red at work, man she was definitely a beauty for sure. I don't know which one handle better, but on look, I have to go with BMW X6.

Most people here know I like Infiniti, but I don't find the new FX attractive at all. It's too contradictory--the air vent is really the thing that completely ruins the entire design. It looks tacky. I much prefer the current model, and the X6, which I saw on the road the other day.

Was behind a black FX450. The view resembled a Darth Vader helmet.

Will someone please kill the faux side gills trend? Once ford started using it on their Focus it basically hit rock bottom. And BTW the focus side gill looks eerily familiar to the FX's.
