Waiting at a traffic light in a 2013 Lexus LS 600h L, the fuel-saving yet powerful hybrid powertain automatically switched to temporary shutdown and the quiet environment inside the big luxury car became nearly silent.

Before I lifted my foot off the brake and the car sprung back to life, I realized I could barely hear the cement truck in front of me.

Powering down the driver's side window, I confirmed that diesel-engined concrete mixers have not suddenly become quiet. The Lexus had shielded me from the noisy outside world.
