New Spy Photos BMW 755ih Hybrid

i bet everyone on this site creams themselves over this, even though when lexus did it, it was considered pointless and a waste of a hybrid...

The article states the electric motor is to help achieve better performance, better fuel economy in the neighbourhood of 15% is a bonus.
The V8 turbo will have more weight to haul around so don't expect the fuel economy to improve at all (more weight will probably trigger the turbo more often) and I doubt the performance will change either.

LS600hL is rated at 20/22/21mpg while the LS460 is 16/24/19, roughly 10% better combined fuel economy. Note the LS600hL needs 16.3 barrels of oil a year while the LS460 neeeds 18. Not a drastic difference between the two cars but hybrid technology will only get better, look at the Prius3, bigger car, bigger engine, more power, better performance, better fuel economy.

Should be interesting to hear the excuses though. It'll probably have that pointless 8speed automatic as well.

Oh yeah, everybody was harping on Lexus for using the 'd' to denote diesel on the IS250d. Wonder how BMW fans like the 'h' to denote hybrid?
Things that are common sense is universal.

i say ditch the hybrids and stick to diesel , they make more sense in a car this size and dont come off as much of a sell out

FWIW that's an Li that is pictured.

Strange that they'd do a V8 hybrid. IMO, they should have used the n54/55 in conjunction with the hybrid, or, for this sort of money, used the diesel from the 335d. In the first case, 30mpg combined would have been achievable. In the second case, closer to 36 combined. Also strange that they'd de-tune the engine so much. Perhaps the valve train has been modified so that the intake valves close early in order to achieve over-expansion ala atkinson cycle. That would explain the lower specific power.

Actually, the RX400h only used 13.7 barrels vs the ML320 Bluetecs 19.3 barrels. The difference would be enough to fuel the Prius for a year.

Yeah, the LS600hL needs a little less oil yet gets better mileage. Interesting concept isn't it, more from less unlike the German's solution to pollution of more from more (i.e. diesels, more mileage but it needs more oil to make).

2009 ML320 Bluetec = 18/24/20mpg
2008 RX400h AWD = 26/24/25mpg
2010 RX450h AWD = 30/28/29mpg and only needs 11.8 barrels. Even more from even less.

Hell, the E320 Bluetec SEDAN gets 23/32/26mpg and it still burns 15 barrels of oil. How is it an SUV can outmileage Mercedes' pride and joy?

The Germans are going to have to spend hundreds of millions spreading their diesel propaganda to make Europeans believe diesels are the 23rd century solution, and that its a good thing they get to pay more for a diesel that makes them ever more dependent on middle eastern oil.

Just admit it, the Germans have finally seen the light after Toyota/Honda did all the work making hybrids mainstream.

my mistake, the ML320 Bluetec actually needs 19.7 barrels of oil. There's a nice handy domestic/import oil breakdown too.

Its kind of funny that the BMW 335d is advertised with 23/36mpg and 6.3 sec 0-60 while the RXh can do it in 7.2.

True the X3 2.0diesels can get 37 US mpg but they're not here and they also have a leisurely 10+ second acceleration. Hybrids give the best of both worlds plus more that diesels can't offer (RX450h is 148g C02 while the 2.0L X3 diesel is 165+g depending if you want speed, mileage or price). www.bmw.co.uk It's quite sad how limited diesel technology really is, unfortunate Europeans have been conditioned to believe that the higher price is really good for them.

Its a good Toyota/Honda have directed BMW on how to proceed in their car development, the sooner we get diesels off the road (except for commercial uses) the better.

Before I forget, there's no such thing as a hydrogen/diesel hybrid, the basis for hydrogen is hybrid technology (batteries, electric motors). Leave it to BMW to create a hydrogen car that has no compatibility with electricity.

Is BMW already back with their old naming standards ?
According to the new one, it should have been dubbed the 755i Hdrive.
Just wondering how they are going to name the long wheelbase variant, the 755iHL or the L755iH ?

It was not mandatory to badge the car as an hybrid, maybe slightly different wheels or trim would have done the job. Those HYBRID badges reminds me the time when it was common to see "FUEL INJECTION" "ABS" or even "AUTOMATIC" badges on car.
