New engine design could improve fuel efficiency, at a fraction of the cost of hybrid technology
By combining turbochargers and direct fuel injection and augmenting them with a novel way to use a small amount of ethanol, Cohn and his colleagues have created a design that they believe could triple the power of a test engine, an advance that could allow automakers to convert small engines designed for economy cars into muscular engines with more than enough power for SUVs or sports cars. Very good story. Now I actually know what knock is. I'd be excited by that engine.

Most interesting news. I really hope that this type of technology is implemented into everyday engines by the 2011 forecast that they estimated.

LOL... WOW... They just invented... wait for it: A diesel engine that runs on gasoline! I'm sorry to be a party spoiler, but this isn't a brakethrough in anything! That is exactly why diesel engines are so much more efficient... They run at much higher compression than a gasoline engine. They can do this because diesel isn't as unstable as gasoline. So what they have made here is a complicated system with dual injection that does exactly the same as a way simpler diesel system! This is just silly... And god forbid that you run out of ethanol even once! As soon as a single ethanol injection is missed, it will result in massive knocking. And at diesel'ish compressions, that will mean that you get a full gasoline combustion, before top dead center resulting in the combustion gasses trying to force the piston backwards! Do I need to tell you why that is a bad thing?!

Also, since both gasoline and ethanol has a lower BTU content than diesel, it won't reach the efficiency of a diesel engine!

Anyway, I don't see a market for this engine! Because if you want the best urban milage, a hybrid is a better choice. If you want the best highway milage (and at 25%, better urban milage) you buy a diesel! This is just another case of new technology developed with the developers head stuck in the ground! If the technology doesn't represent a real brakethrough, it's not new technology. Just some scientists wasting other peoples money!

The ICE engine has no more potential on it's own! The diesel engines of today have completely exhausted the potential of these engines! The only way to increase their performance is to find a material that takes up less heat from the combustion and can coape with the higher temperatures. This means both all the materials of the engine components as well as the lubricants!

yeah, stupid scientists. what have they done for the world?

What?! Are you being sarcastic?! I don't get it ;)

I just don't think that this is as marvolous a discovery as they try to make it sound like! The Combined Cycle engine developed by VW is way smarter. It uses the direct injection to inject the fuel at exactly the right time in order to compression ignite the fuel... Now that is clever! And you don't run the risk of an engine blow out if a nozzle fails! The car just coughs!

yes, sarcasm. i agree it seems like they think they captured cold-fussion or something, but i don't think their findings are to be thrown out. the vw discovery is pretty clever, i must say. perhaps both methods could be used.

Ethanols is hype. Bio diesel is 4 times better. In the amount of energy gained.

Direct injection+turbo was pioneered by Audi with its Le Mans racing R8. Now available on most Audis.

Make the engine, then bolt-on a hybrid system.

Old news VW did this last year (or two years?). What about the gas motor that ran on high compression with high torque and improved mpg.Does anyone remember the name? HH something? That impresses me more!

That was the VW engine... I think it is called a Combined Cycle engine. That is a way better solution than this system!
