New rendering of entry-level Audi
It’s been well documented BMW is developing a new minicar to rival cars like the Mercedes Smart and upcoming Volkswagen Up! (Lupo) family, but Audi too has confirmed it will be joining the fray with the launch of its new A1 compact hatch.

The new super-mini is slated to arrive in late 2010 and will be offered with both coupe and cabrio bodystyles.

Unlike their French and Italian counterparts, who specialize in compact and efficient hatchbacks, German carmakers are mostly recognized for building big and thirsty luxury cars.

It better be badged as VW, otherwise I don't know what's the difference between these 2 no more.

It seems to me that it would be quite pointless to buy a BMW or Audi that costs double what a Versa or Fit would. I would be fine saving the money and not buying one of these little toys.

Why pay more for 5 series or A6, when you can get an Accord or Altima for half the price. The same reason people will buy a small BMW or Audi over a Versa or Fit.

Luxury doesn't have to be big. There are a lot of people who are looking for the comfort and luxurious interiors of a luxury car but also want it to be economical and small.

Why was audispy de-boosted? What could have possibly been considered offensive in his post? He's absolutely correct.

Just to clarify I did not do the de-boosting. I understand people may want luxury in a small car, and that makes sense. I guess I could have fine tuned my comment to explain that I wish they could make this small cars a little more appealing. They are roughly the size of a VW rabbit (fit, versa, etc.) so why not take an Audi A3, and chop part of the back off. It just seems the luxo brands are coming out with small car concepts that while good in their thought and approach, seem to lack in appeal cause they look way to stubby for what they are.

I couldn't agree more with Audispy.

The problem is that most Americans think that something has to be big to be luxurious.

The A6 is the highest selling mid size luxury sedan in the world. Remember that for the next post you'll make. I really can't imagine how someone can have such a closed mind. Just because you're a fan of something doesn't mean you have to hate everything else. I love Audis but that doesn't mean I hate BMW.

And when someone puts down something like a car company no matter what they make or how good it is, it only means one thing. They fear competition. Well I say don't fear competition, and don't live in denial. Competition is what gives us great things. Without it, we would still be in the stone age.

Shutup bimmer, the A6 is superior to the 5 series.

First MB, then BMW, now Audi. My God, exclusivity is now attainable for everyone!

Can't wait to jump into my $20,000 luxury branded go-kart.

The 5 series comes nowhere close to an A6.

audispy,
Have you ever sat in a B-class or a 320i? These cars are anything but luxurious.
I remember the German fans saying Toyotas weren't luxury eventhough they could be purchased with nearly the same amenities (and cost more too).

Why don't these customers just go buy some gold chains? It'd probably be worth more than these poser cars.

Go look at the A1 concept car before opening your face, alright?

It included an iPhone-like device that controls all major functions of the car, and it can be integrated into the dash or taken out for phone use. It includes your music library and contacts, and Audi said there was a good possibility for production. It even comes in the color to match the car. That luxurious enough?

You obviously never sat in a B-class or 320i. Seeing as for example the 320i can be equipped the same way as an M3, so next you are probably gonna say the M3 is nowhere near anything luxurious?

You have to understand that there is more than one way of being luxurious. So many people here are close minded or maybe just fanboys and it's hard for them to except this. You can offer luxury through comfort, many different devices such as what S4 mentions, beautifuly designed interiors, or even comfortable rides.

I hate it when people claim cars aren't luxury cars because another company owns the car or because the car is more sporty or because it's a small car. Well have you ever sat in a BMW. It maybe sporty but that makes i fun to drive and comfortable to be in, and that is luxury to have don't you think, and some BMW even have the nice interiors too. Or have you sat in a Mercedes to see all the options that come with it, or an Audi to see how comfortable it is or how beautiful it is on the inside.

And people say by makin smaller cars they are cheapening their brand, but not really. You can't compare the price of a small car to a bigger car, as in you can't say the A3 or the 320 or B-class cost's as much as a Accord, because the Accord is much bigger than those cars. Then you compare them to cars of their own size and you can see that they are not so cheap after all. So yes, batge whores will be able to get these cars for cheap, but most people won't take a small car over a big car because they cost the same, and most people who are looking for a small car, will buy the cheap one over the expensive one, unless they have the money. And in the end, the brand will not be cheapened by much if at all.

problem is in different views of what is luxurious.

just a simple example: in USA, leather is regarded as luxurious. In Europe, that is far from truth.

Europe regards luxurious something that is very well built, has a polished design in and out, has above average materials, has a driving experience that connects with european needs (a bit more dynamic, firm suspension and at the same time, safety) plus a badge at the end.

and 3 series (and B class, or even A class, or audi a3 and so on) are regarded as entry luxurious vehicles that offer most of the stuff of the bigger brothers and bring more comfort, design, safety to tighter budgets.

They should create something similar to the Volvo C30, small, compact, good mileage, and a fun little car to toss around.

I think the C30 is actually a perfect representation of what an 'entry level' luxury car is - good looking, fun to drive, nice interior, good pieces of design inside and out, safe and comfortable.

It will be the slowest car in it's class just like all the other non "S" or "RS" Audis.

Audi builds the nicest cars but they nuder them with weak underpowered engines. Next!

Luxury = everything. Quality, performance, value, prestige and uniqueness.

Lexus only lacks the prestige, but that's because yuppies over here don't realize that BMW/MB and Audi all have chump models in Europe.

heyhuub,
The last 320i interior was no better than the Civics, except the civic had better performance.

Actually, available on the M3 but not on normal 3s are double-clutch, seats that widen (for lard asses), enhanced sounds (better than Logic7), 19" wheels and electronic damping control.

I'd love to challenge you on what luxury vehicles I've been in and driven. Care to take me up on it?
