BMW enthusiasts in the US are anxiously anticipating the arrival of the next-generation 5-series Sports Wagon after having received word that BMW is on the fence on whether it will push through with its plan to bring the car to US shores.

The odds aren’t good.

BMW’s indecision is fueled in part by year-to-date sales of the 5er wagon, a disastrously low 395 units through June. The 5-Series wagon, which is only available in all-wheel-drive 535xi trim, recorded its sales peak back in 2005, with 2,351 units sold. BMW is relying on the new 5-series Gran Turismo, which will be released to the market in November. It expects to sell up to 4,000 GTs each year in the US, making up 10-20% of 5-series sales. It doesn’t look good as BMW is likely feeling that the wagon is expendable.
